  • This is the extremely rare footage of a pack of 15+ wild dogs separating and then taking down a healthy adult buffalo!

A pack of wild dogs pulled off the near-impossible and worked together to separate a healthy adult buffalo cow from the rest of the herd. Their vocalization and continuous biting were too much for the buffalo who was eventually brought down and feasted on by the pack.

This once-in-a-lifetime sighting was captured by 37-year-old lodge manager and guide at Old Mondoro Bush Camp, Mark Nicholson, and his guest, Kevin Dersley, while on safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park.
Mark tells LatestSightings.com the story: “The guests were very keen on seeing the dogs and, with them denning not too far from camp, we had some idea as to where they were. The pack heads out early each morning to hunt and, if they are successful, they return to the den to feed the pups by the alpha female. They have the same routine in the afternoon, heading out around 17:00 to hunt before it gets dark.”
“There are large open areas south of their den and that is where we found them out on the hunt. Then we saw the herd of buffalo; we have seen them attempt to hunt amongst a herd before - trying to separate a youngster or a weak individual but had never seen them have any success.”
“This particular afternoon they started out harassing the herd as usual and then they chased them into a woody area where they managed to separate an adult female from the herd. It was then that they went into overdrive and started biting and pulling her hindquarters and legs. Several other buffalo attempted to chase the wild dogs off, with a few wild dogs countering and chasing them off each time, this allowed majority of the pack to continue their chase on the female. It was an extremely emotional sighting that lasted over 20 minutes.”
“I have been in the safari industry for 16 years and have never witnessed anything like this before!! It is definitely the most incredible sighting of my life and don't know many people that have seen a sighting like this before!”
“My advice: Make sure to take it all in when you see something like this, as it's more than likely the sighting of a lifetime!!”

They have the top 3 most densely packed coats that can fend of even the most powerful lone predators like brown bears.
So the only way to kill one that big is to spend hours battling, a wolf's bite is also much more lethal.

I’ve always suspected that painted wolves/African wild dogs to be capable of taking down adult buffalo, but I never really believed it 100% and even then, I never thought ANYONE would catch that on film, but leave it to Kruger Sightings to deliver the unexpected and expected! I love this video! It was a bit of a shame that the initial kill wasn’t shown, but at the same time, I’m kinda thankful because the kill must’ve been REALLY gory. I’m used to seeing that stuff, but the people weak of stomach aren’t.

One of the most interesting parts of the video was the technique the painted wolves utilized. At the start of the actual attack, a couple of painted wolves bit down on the buffalo’s upper lip. I’ve got a funny feeling that the pack filmed specializes in hunting adult buffaloes because of this “lip grab” technique. Another pack in Tanzania specialized in hunting adult zebras because they used this technique, too. It was a learned technique, and when the painted wolves that invented that technique died, the whole zebra-hunting behavior died out for that pack, too. The same thing will most likely be the same for this pack, too.

They didn‘t post the actual „kill“ because wild dogs are very well known for not killing their prey before they eat. They taunt the buffalo with their superior stamina until it can‘t fight back out of shear exhaustion and then start eating it alive rectum first. Lions struggle because they as felines also don‘t have the greatest amount of stamina. That‘s the reason lions need to be big and strong. They overpower and kill their prey before they run out of energy. Wild dogs are small but agile and built for speed and endurance. They don‘t need to overpower when they can just chase/taunt everything into exhaustion

What many people overlook is that,It is not an important question whether it is difficult for wild dogs to hunt buffalo, but the point is that buffalo has no means of killing wild dogs.

If they could show us how the wild dogs attacked the buffalo and struggled to take it down, why couldn't they show us how the wild dogs killed the buffalo. I think they shot the buffalo and fed it to the wild dogs.

    • @samo6083
      @samo6083 2 ปีที่แล้ว

the thing is what he did made perfect sense
The dogs would have been at that adult buffalo for hours.
So what you expected him to record for hours ? He wouldn't know when the buffalo was going to drop or if it would ever drop since this is so rare. It made perfect sense to record some, stop and record again then record when it's come down.
I'm guessing there was a long time between the first couple cuts because he cut not only at that part but near the start and middle too.
It would've been an extremely long hunt
