Great video! Lot of fans can't face the pain, but you have to face it, it's reality.

That missed block by Burford 3rd down in overtime hurt the most for me. Cris Jones was right in front of Burford, how could he not see him? Instead, he shifted to the right to double team the edge, WTF. Don't care if Jones pancaked Burford, Purdy just needed a second longer to find a wide-open BA in the endzone. I agree with you that in the moment the defense was gassed and needed a breather. Wish it would've contributed to them stopping KC in overtime.

You absolutely nailed it Matt. So many opportunities for the 49ers to win that game. The 3 biggest reasons for me is the CMC fumble, Greenlaw leaving the game and the muffed punt.

I tend to move everything related to OT down the list because in my opinion OT should have never happened in the first place. #1 for me in terms of "should have never happened" is the muffed punt, and I blame McCloud more than Luter because McCloud was the only one with eyes on the ball. Luter was setting up to block based on McCloud's position - if McCloud moved FORWARD to let the ball go over his head, Luter wouldn't have been in the drop zone... instead, McCloud moved to the side, pulling Luter right into the drop zone. Coaching issue, maybe? But to me, this is punt return 102. That play was huge.
And... yes, I noticed you didn't say anything about the refs - hahaha - good choice on your part... but damn...!
I get the "let them play" aspect... but then they shouldn't have called holding on Trent (early in the game, no less... probably had a chilling effect on the 49er OL). The call on him was legit, but he did less than KC OL did on several occasions.

Good video, Matt, and I remember reading your article on this in the days after the SB. #2 is what always gets me, but with a slight variation. The issue I had was the 2nd down play moreso than the 3rd down. Off the top of my head, they ran for ~5 yards on 1st down, then decided to pass on 2nd down for minimal gain which resulted in a 3rd and 4. Why did they not run on 2nd down as well? They were running the ball better in the second half, trying to kill clock, and even with just a couple yards could have set up a 3rd and 2 or 3 (better than 3rd and 4) and put them in a position to run the ball once more, maybe even twice more to get a 1st and ice the game. And why risk an incomplete pass to stop the clock? I was looking for the naked bootleg that Steve Young did against Dallas and Alex Smith did against the Saints 🙂
I'm not one of these "fire Shanahan" guys but I do understand some of the criticisms, especially with him getting pass-happy late in Super Bowls!

Personally I’d have added calling a holding on Trent and ignoring KC’s mugging Bosa all game! I agree the players don’t necessarily need to know the OT rules (although no reason to shouldn’t) but I’m not convinced Shanahan knew! Doesn’t make him a bad coach but that IS his job. Juz is as smart as a player gets and if Kyle new, he’s have mentioned it. 100% I’d have taken the ball last! All day every day, it’s a huge advantage knowing what hand the dealer has. But that said, nobody is paying me to coach an NFL team so 🤷🏽‍♂️. Right now I’m more concerned with going 3-4

Truly believe if you flip all of them the result ends up the same except the 3rd down at the end of the 4th. They had control of the result of the game right there. Convert that and 1 more 1st down and they win the game. They had the ball and control and were coming out of a timeout and failed to convert against the blitz.

They lost an incredibly hard fought game by 3 points in overtime. As Steve young says the chiefs took it from their bloody hands. It's unfortunate but the problem today is fans dissect every loss as if it's some travesty that someone should be blamed for. Superbowls have always been incredibly hard to win. Even harder when you're facing the current dynasty.

I have a litany of things that I could say about that game, the current regime, and current ownership.
But I am at the point where I just want to see them get it done.
And I would like them to do it before the NFL fully butchers the league w/ the ascine rule changes.

Sure in hindsight the decision to take the ball first looks bad considering the outcome. But in the moment looking at the defense wearing down they needed a breather, so IMO the decision was twofold. One give them a breather and be aggressive by dictating to the Chiefs. Where Kyle went wrong however is not playing for a touchdown and settling for ah field goal! Love your list though!

Dre Greenlaw injury is #1 it was a huge blow because Travis Kelce was a non factor. Should of had Warner on Kelce

Refs. Same crew in both losses. The Chiefs tackles are terrible and how they got zero holding calls in both Superbowls is unbelievable. Just call one so the paper trail ain't so obvious 🤡🤑

Number one reason - Kyle bad play calling on 3rd and 4 play. Purdy had been carrying this offense with his legs in playoffs and the coach couldn’t come up with a play like zone read on those crucial 3rd downs. Instead asked QB for high level read on the blitz in split second. Also on the micd up, he was yelling CMC. He forgot who carried him in the playoffs and not trusting his legs to make play, instead he called a play that was most obvious.
I disagree not knowing overtime rules has no impact, we literally played with 3 downs not 4 downs. Chiefs played with a known target unlike us playing with unknown target. Come on

I think it's impossible to talk about bad play calling because other people will point out that receivers were open on those plays. You could say they were great calls but execution was off.

1; thanks for responding to comments 2; Thanks for doing great reporting in Bay Area for many years.
I have seen Tom Brady missing a receiver against Spags blitz package in a Super Bowl. Defense exactly knows what their check down and their read. It was such a predicable play.
Spags did not call that particular blitz anytime in the game and waited for the moment, unlike Shanahan who had no surprise to Spags. This is why Shanahan struggles closing the game, good DC always know his predictability. It’s not about running or passing the ball, it’s being unpredictable at those moments. I’m a huge Shanahan fan, but he needs to improve on this one area
Most zero blitz will have receivers open nothing to do with scheme.

I can’t stand the “should have lost” talk. They did lose to the 49ers because those games were fairly called and the niners made more plays. Whether it’s 1 or 10. Nobody “should have lost” a game.
