    Great video. Love your channel but I’ve watched countless videos of Alu Cab builds and not a single video shows whether or not you can close and lock the back door from the inside as you are up in the tent sleeping. Can you close and secure the back door from inside the Alu Cab?

    • @bigsouthoverland

    Something you could do for a trasharoo type bag for the tire mount is a dry bag. You can take the backpack straps off the dry bag and lash it to your spare tire. Just put a heavy duty trash bag inside it and you are good to go!!

    I'm loving this build. Can you tell us more about your suspension, especially the specs on the heavy duty leaf springs? I added an Alu Cab Canopy Camper to my Tacoma and it's largely coping fine with the additional 400lbs but there is definite sag and loss of ground clearance. I'm looking at Deaver Expedition Stage II that claim to handle 400-600lbs additional bed weight with around 2" lift. Also, did you cut the Prinsu rack to fit? Was it making contact? Looking forward to your heater video. Keep up the excellent work!

    • @bigsouthoverland
      @bigsouthoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Duane the leaf packs are O.M.E./ARB heavy duty...per the specs, they should keep the truck level up to 660lbs... I believe. I also have the Bilstein 5160 shocks in the rear. I am sure with our additions of gear we have exceeded the 660lbs. but the combination of the two seems to be working well. As for the Prinsu rack...I chose to cut it down mainly to eliminate weight and I was unable to use the portion of it that is under the camper. It was not touching the camper in any way. We are headed to camp and I should be able to finish up the heater video soon. Keep watching. Thanks.

    • @bigsouthoverland

      Hey. The tank is through bolted to the bulkhead of the camper. The Front Runner tank has holes molded in it to facilitate this. Install the tank BEFORE the camper is installed. Good Luck.

    So we look like we're about the same age and the wife and I are about to completely retire in 6 months and want to do something like what we see you doing. I like the simplicity of the design and I keep coming back to the same camper setup. Don't want something gigantic and full-time, want to be more maneuverable and enjoy driving in parts of Alaska also. Not the typical gigantic full-time retired mess I see people using. Still want to be able to pull our boat and do some fishing also. Not going to be full-time off-road boondocking but having the availability! Wondering what your favorite setup is for bathroom necessities? Getting up in the middle of the night needing to go sometimes? Any opinions or advice would be highly appreciated friend! Thank you very much for your time. We will be tuning in often! John& Dawn

    • @bigsouthoverland
      @bigsouthoverland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John. We have have three different bathroom options. A 5 gallon bucket, a Foldable leg style from Walmart and currently a Thunderbox, also foldable, from Iron Man America. The Wally proved difficult to collapse/open the legs but light weight. The Thunderbox folds nicely but is heavy, With each we would simply place it set up at night in the floor of the camper at the front of the bed/cab area so it was ready if needed during the night. Obviously you'd need to stoop under the camper bed to use, or at the rear but for us with the benches and the rear door that didn't work. In the mornings we pack it away if we are moving on or place it outside in the 23 Zero shower enclosure. I hope this helps. We are getting back on the road soon so keep an eye out . If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.

    • @bigsouthoverland

      I too had some trouble. Remember the turn is only a 1/4 turn to lock it. Open it and line up the catch lever inside pointing up...then close and turn to the left with a 1/4 turn while pushing in on the face to compress the foam and it should catch. Good Luck.

      Here are the links to the ball and mount. You will of course need the ram ball mount base also.

    Hi there, I have been considering the front runner water container between the cab and the front bulkhead of my Canopy Camper also. Can you tell me how you mounted it to the canopy camper? Thanks.

    • @bigsouthoverland
      @bigsouthoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely! The tank is molded with holes that enable it to be through bolted to the bulkhead. Use about a 2.5" or 3" bolt and some large fender washers to hold it in place. You will need to drill through the bulkhead...and you will have to remove the two trim panels on the side of the camper...It's a job but it can be done.

    • @david.rencher
      @david.rencher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bigsouthoverland thanks, I was scared you were going to say drill! Haha I wish there were more t-track on the outside of that bulkhead.

    • @bigsouthoverland
      @bigsouthoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@david.rencher I couldn't figure out any other way to mount it without drilling. I think outside is a better option than inside which is what Alu Cab has come up with using their tank.

      How hard is the water tank to fill?

    • @bigsouthoverland
      @bigsouthoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinklasman not hard at all. I did have to install another fill valve because the valve that is built into the tank becomes inaccessible once the tank is installed in front of the bulkhead.

    What mattress are you using to sleep on and do you like it? Is it easy to store up there?

    • @bigsouthoverland
      @bigsouthoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Josh, We are using the Alu-Cab mattress that was included with the camper and we also added a 3" foam topper. We can close it with two pillows and both mattress/topper, inside with no issue. We sleep pretty well up there.

    What thickness did you go for on that mattress? Is it comfy ?

    • @bigsouthoverland
      @bigsouthoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 4" I believe and we added a 3" foam topper that we cut to fit. With both it's great. Just the Alu Cab mattress was not enough for us.

      I do need something beefier in the rear. It will bottom out if I hit a hole to hard. I may add another leaf. The front seems fine. I hope that helps.

    With all the weight that's on the truck why not opt for a full size truck that can handle the load. Tacoma was never meant to be driven with all that weight. Handling must be nerve-wracking.
