    Thanks so much for this info man. This was extremely helpfull for me wanting to get into TurboGrafx, and doing it right the first time and not wasting any money!

    Chris, I do want to give my thanks. You have actually helped me believe it or not get into collecting for the Turbografx-16. I ended up picking up a few games a few weeks ago. What I am actually interested in is the TurboExpress so I can play TG-16 on the go, or on the TV via a tuner.
    Once again, thanks for the 411 on covering the system! Very informative, and in-depth!

    It was always a bit of a minefield when it came to the CD formats for the system. Especially if you were collecting much later in the life and into import gaming.
    But most excellent video Sir, really enjoyed it!

      Right? Tell me about it. The good news is, I never had much trouble at the time (I didn't import much back then, I got my DraculaX, that's all I needed it, lol!)
      Thanks for watching as always Larry. :)

      Turbo CD is the best early 90s CD system, when you include the PC Engine CD library it destroys the Mega CD.

    Amazing. Commented 4 days ago and hadn't even heard of this thing. Now whad'ya know, Turbografx mini announced at E3! Thought of you immediately.

    • @Sinn0100
      @Sinn0100 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been 10 months and the mini's have technically been released! I got my PCE Core Grafx Mini and I love it! If you haven't got one yet you can order one from Amazon Japan. They're completely out of the TG-16 Mini's and why I went with the Core Grafx. They are identical in every single way accept the case. The PCE Mini has less games and no turbo switches. I ordered mine and got it in 4 days! The cost of shipping was...I don't even know how they do this...it was $10.00 USD, that's it!
      What's absolutely bananas is how many games are on the TG-16 and PCE Core Grafx Mini. They started out saying...50 games. That turned into 55 games and we thought that was it. Then people starting unearthing secret game after secret game. The number is at 66 or if you count the English Ninja Gaiden ROM cheat it's 67 games so far...you can get to these secret games by pressing select a certain amount of times on different games. Seriously, my Core Grafx Mini is the best micro console I have ever seen and I have them all. It even manages to beat the mighty Neo Geo AES mini and I'm an SNK collector saying this...get it now if you can! ;)

    I never really understood the "order only" marketing with the Super System Card. Maybe some sort of early test market before the Duo release? Still this is really valuable stuff to know because this system can get confusing to collect for. There are some titles like "Ys Book 1 & 2" that knowing what version you have is vital. I would hate to find out I got the Duo version with no Super System Card to play it!
    I just have to add that your whole channel has been super helpful. It's videos like these that add some of those extra bits of info. I've recently added a Turbo to my line-up of systems because Turbo Views sparked a fascination! It's good to know about the compositor problems. That alone will help me in future hardware requirements!
    Anyways, before I ramble like a collector, thanks again for the series. Can't wait for the next game review ^_^

    • @spida1a
      @spida1a  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know, it can get pretty crazy. That nice part is ... Ys Duo version has the CD2ROM on the Disc. If you run across it and don't have the Super System Card, you can still play it (as it's just a regular CDROM game). At least that's the nice part. Ha ha.
      I'm so glad you found some use from my channel! I am happy to hear and thanks my friend. :)

    i feel like back in the 80s and 90s big entertainment systems was a trend im not surprised the turbo and super turbo ended up being bulk systems with attachments also the pioneer system is a perfect example of entertainment system style set up. I do believe if these game consoles took off the mid 90s nintendos, segas and playstations woulda been a whole stereo system attachment add ons.

    Got a Turbografx-16 from TRU when it first came out. Really enjoyed it and liked how the games are on the slim HuCards. Just so cool! I traded it in to get a SNES though. The lack of good games hurt the system and they were hardly bringing games over from Japan. I didn't have an adapter and couldn't afford the Japanese games being in high school at the time. I eventually picked up the TurboDuo years later and started collecting import games. I still have it along with a Kisado converter for the Japanese HuCard games. Great system and it's a shame TTI didn't market it well here in the US.

    This is an awesome video. I love the TurboGrafx, but I just don't have the money to adapt mine with the CD stuff, and all the good stuff you have. I actually accepted the fact I may never get the CD.
    But last week on Facebook I saw a PC Engine briefcase for $150! So I got that today. It is clean! Caps are fine. I have to print that gear... I feel lucky to have found it. I have an Everdrive, so I don't have to buy a collection over again. Perhaps one day I can find a handheld....Not!
    It has taken about ten years to assemble my console collection. Feels good!

    I had to come back...while the TG-16 and TG-16 CD ROM looked unsightly too me the Duo is sweeeet looking. At any rate, here's some cool information some people might like to know about NEC's console...
    System Cards:
    The bulge in the Super System Card/Arcade Card is RAM. The Super System Card added 256kb of RAM to your TG-16 CD ROM ROM. That may not sound like much but back then it was freaking huge. The Arcade Card adds 2mb of RAM or in 16-bit console speak 16 megs. What's funny is that is less added RAM than what came with the SF2 Championship Edition Hue Card for the PC Engine (24megs). That was the biggest card ever released for the system.
    Games-
    Did you know that some of the people behind The incredible Thunder Force series for the Genesis/Saturn/Arcade also created Gates of Thunder? No wonder the game is an absolute banger.
    Did you know that Bonk actually appeared on the Nes? Hudson ported the original TG-16 version over. It was a very good port but of course lacked the graphical punch of the TG-16 counterpart.
    Did you know that Y's I-II were actually separate games before they were ported to the TG-16 CD? The Sega Master System actually had the very best version of the first game before the TG-16 port released. Much like R-Type before it. Sega had the very best version until it released on the TG-16 as a whole game (it sold in two parts on the PC Engine).
    Ninja Spirit for the TG-16 was almost arcade perfect. It is such a good game and anyone interested in this machine should check it out. It does suffer from some flicker and slowdown but it doesn't effect the gameplay that much. The game just throws so much on screen at once...very cool.

    • @ChristopherSobieniak
      @ChristopherSobieniak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much (aside from VCD, but we know where that went). But yeah, it's interesting Japanese record companies weren't quick to go on the CD+G bandwagon with their licensed anime properties of the time, that way you'd have this cool radio drama to listen to while seeing the pictures on your TV!

    I just don't understand how the Amercian HuCards are called Turbo Chips. It says HuCard on the american hucards as well!

    • @spartonberry
      @spartonberry 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Probably marketing. "TurboChip" probably sounded easier to understand and more exciting (the same time that cartridge games would often advertise their memory size (megabits) to sound more impressive). Harder to explain what "Hu" is. And besides that, I'm not sure if Hudson would've needed to limit themselves from association with the console at the time in America due to Nintendo of America's restrictive license agreement (though I've heard different information on the extent of that policy). Wondering if that's why they added "FROM NEC" to the title screens of most US version games.

    • @ChristopherSobieniak
      @ChristopherSobieniak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      spartonberry It probably is. I'm sure a lot of clever marketing had to go into how they tried to market the TG-16 back in '89. I suppose keeping the "Hucard" written on the "turbochips" might be a legal designation on Hudson's part given they probably held patents to that.

    • @spida1a
      @spida1a  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think spartonberry and Christopher S already answered that pretty good. Not to mention, everything they went with marketing-wise had Turbo "something" with it. You know? Stick, Tap, Pad ... Chip. Ha ha.
      Thanks for watching.

    You know my TG-16 console from Toys R us was broken on Xmas morning also. My dad took me to exchange it the next day. In my case my dad actually had already opened it and played through Bonk's adventure while I was at school so you could argue that he broke it somehow.

    It's funny that you mention turbo chips being the thing people probably think of immediately when they think of the TurboGrafx-16, because when I was a kid, I didn't even know they existed -- I thought the TG-16 was *solely* a CD-based system. Like, I'd never even heard of it until the Turbo CD had been released, and at that point, all I *ever* heard about was the Turbo CD. I didn't learn that turbo chips existed until... man, probably 10 years later?
    The same was true of others in my area, too. Nobody we knew owned one of these (though I think everybody was at least a little curious about it), so all we really had to go by was what we heard about in ads. So we all pretty much assumed it was basically nothing but Bonk's Adventure games and the like... all on CD.
    I wonder if that was true of others as well, or if my rural-ass Pennsylvania town was just REALLY FAR out of the loop. ;)

      Wyrdwad Funny you say that as I only knew of the Turbo Express growing up, but it sort of stands to reason as I was actively seeking out the best way to play games portably and that was basically the pinnacle until almost half a decade later when the Nomad came out.

    Great work as you always do man. I don’t know what they were thinking with all those different cd cards and stuff haha. I don’t think it would have turned the tide for them, but that couldn’t have helped build an install base. But great system nonetheless.

    I think we're both Italian, and the same age lol. I got a Turbo and CD around the same time, sadly it was stolen. Lately though I've been re-buying my childhood. The cost of cartridges is insane. I ended up getting a EDFX + Everdrive Pro combo. I noticed the market just suddenly went crazy a few years ago, what happened?

  • @Sinn0100
    @Sinn0100 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay...and I don't mean anything by this but...nothing is form factor. I got a Sega Genesis in 1989 and a Sega CD in 1992 (Snes in 1991). I never had a Turbo Grafx 16 (I have a Core Grafx Mini!). When it came out I remember how much NEC tried to nickle and dime us too death. You wanted two players you had to either buy a Turbo Tap or a two player tap and another controller. Now, I used to think the booster fit the console well. Now that I see it close up it looks like it doesn't fit right. However, that's not my biggest issue...the CD ROM attachment is cool no doubt, however, it doesn't look right on the back of the TG-16.
    When you spend upwards of $400 (price at launch) you expect it to look like a high-end piece of equipment. The Model 1 Sega Genesis w/ Sega CD looked damn good and I loved having that thing upfront for all too see. The Snes for example was so butt ugly that I hid it from view. The last thing that always bothered me about NEC was the System Cards. They could have added extra hardware with their CD ROM. The Sega CD was an absolute beast when it hit at $299.00. Not only did it come with the extra RAM to push games further but it also had its own Motorola 68K processor that was clocked higher than the Genesis. When you couple this with the custom chipset for rotation and scaling it was out of this world. I really wanted NEC to do the same thing but unfortunately, they went with numerous System Cards making it a confusing mess.
    Again, I'm not saying the Turbo Grafx was bad. It was a damn good machine that was mismanaged here in the States and that is a shame. NEC finally did it right with the Turbo Duo that thing was impressive! Great video!

      No sadly, North America never received the Arcade Card. The system had all but disappeared by then. In fact, I never even heard of that until I finally go onto the internet in the mid90s. Then I was PSYCHED .. picked one up (which obviously I had to use with my converter) ... and chopped away at some Neo Geo fighters. Cool stuff. Lol. :)

    I really disliked the one controller port and the no RCA out cuz even at like 9 years old, I hated RF. Thats one thing the TG-Mini (which I just got news that it will be shipped out soon, FINALLY!) got right was the 2 USB slots for 2 controllers. Im still mad my TurboTap crapped out on me back in the 90s.

    This was a great watch but wow this is a mess to do a complete collection for. Seems Turbo Duo is the best for someone that has to have it all or just a base TG16 and the booster perhaps for chip games only. I wonder if all of this crazy accesspry nonsense was a contributing factor in the turbo failing in thr US. One controller port without an accessory for example, that's just silly.
