🔨 Building a Duck House w/Deck & Pool On The Farm (coop, pen, run)

  • Our five Pekin ducks outgrew the brooder and are pushing all the little chicks around and making a mess with the food and water in the small brooder pen. So in this video, I build a duck coop with a deck and pool.

    Just about completed my first little duck “shelter” I’d hardly call it a house. But Shake and Bake love it so far. Hopefully that continues

    Love the pond in the deck idea! Much cheaper and faster than trying to dig a pond 😅

    It looks really nice. I like the idea of having a drain at the bottom of the "pool".

    Pretty straight forward design. I like that you look to be using what is lying around, not new. Sometimes you have to, but why if not.

      Heck yeah! On the farm I have to buy wood for projects all the time. It’s awesome when something can come together out of almost all scrap 🙌🏼 this was fencing and decking scrap. Thanks for the note.

      I did the same thing when I decided that the pool ought to be elevated on a dock to reduce ground trample and mudding. I'm also working on an experimental gravity feed water filtration system to reuse/conserve and repurpose the pool water. That way when I refresh the pool it can be filtered for a second use and/or filtered and ran off into one the summer vegetable garden plots on either side of the enclosure. I'm actually heading out to the duck yard right now! Country Life😌

    I feel like this is a common theme in farming / homesteading: "I didn't expect things to progress so quickly and now I need to do this thing NOW!!" Sorry, I laugh because I find myself saying this ALL THE TIME. :D

      Yes!!! 😂 This is a very common theme here at our Homestead as well. Were always feeling like we're falling behind on all projects. Building fences at 2 am cause we'll, it's gotta be done cause we bought more goats or gotta build another chicken tractor and recently up until 2 am building a duck run. Lol Hence why I am watchujng this video for a better duck run. Haha!! Glad to know we're not the only ones.

    Duck houses need ventilation 1sq ft per every 10sqft of floor. They need 4-6sqft per duck of floor space. They put off a lot of moisture when they breathe, which causes mold and bacteria to grow and a lot of times they get pneumonia. They're good down to 20 degrees before you need to have a heat source

  • @tammygillettVictoryGarden

    Love idea is pond on deck. Not sure if others mentioned but the hardware cloth much safer for keeping predators out

  • @Horselackey
    @Horselackey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Ducks need more ventilation... they do not need heat like chickens, after feathering out. They are much more robust than chickens... Chicken wire will keep them in, but not any determined predator out, raccoon, dog, fox, coyote.... ( I raise them)...Nice work, but mostly mine ignore houses, except for the runners when it is below freezing... everyone else prefers to be outside , next to the water buckets or ponds...

    That heat lamp will kill those ducks. Fully feathered their body temperatures are around 105. All they need is some bedding and a couple ventilation vents. I would have put the pond on the ground and cut a hole in the side and plugged it with a cork for drainage. It is a great design though.

    I totally understand. My ducklings have multiplied in size many times over in the 3 short weeks that we've had them. I had hoped to house the poultry together, but I now realize that the ducks are far too messy to live with the little "fluffy" silkies and I've been trying to come up with an idea for a swimming area that's functional and not too tremendous a burden to clean. I like the idea of a drain and I think we'll try to do something similar. The elevated pool seems like a good idea also & with the little deck around it, probably less messy also. How is it working out?

      They just went in on their own actually. The chickens went into the coop and the ducks went into this house. I think some of the chickens went into the duck house but the ducks kicked them out. It’s crazy how they just know. Also the duck house is low to the ground so it’s really the only place where the ducks can go.
