Yet again we see John doing a Level 42 song & not like many of Mark King's detractors accuse him of & thats doing too much slapping on the bass yet this is another like many were Mark lays down a great bass line that isn't too busy & as always serves the song... There quite a few bass lines when Mark opts for finger playing & at times doing some slap at certain points within those songs but i've never thought of Mark as one who slaps on the bass too much as all his bass lines serve the song & dont sound like he is instead doing a an ultra fast solo & i think thats were many of Marks detractors dont pick up on as they think he just plays by his thumb & doing slap style bass lines that are way too busy, when he is not... " Lessons In Love " is a perfect example of just taking individual notes but making it sound like more as he is doubling up his thumb slaps on those singular notes... I remember Mark & the lads of Level 42 were told by their management to go into the studio and record at least 2 New Singles to release that would hopefully become hits, all the while they were on on a large tour for the " World Machine " album... So they quickly go intl the studio & 2 song's were done & in the bag & they went back out to do the remainder of their tour... One of the songs was " Running In The Family " & the other was " Lessons In Love " & Mark recorded the bass & vocal separately but when he went to play the bass line in Lessons In Love & sing at the same time he oir the first time got stuck & couldn't do it & Mark had to practice & keep playing & singing that song all the while playing that bass line as he never thought he wouldd have an issue playing the bass line for that song & singing at the same time, so it goes to show you that even the best of the best have to really work at it... In light if this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe & healthy wherever you are in this world... .....
Hi Ray, this video is hidden but when you click this link you can watch it. I received the Bass on Monday. It' s a very cheap Bass. It feels very uncomfortable. The exact position of your fingers on the fretboard is very important. It's getting better but it needs a lot of improvement. This is me practicing. I think I will upload a final version on Saturday. -- th-cam.com/video/W-deEB_fIkk/w-d-xo.html
Great John. One of the best L42 songs IMHO. Poignant and sad in a way as I think that Phil was implying that it was time to go. Yes the flash funky lines are great but the groove here is superb. Past Lives (extra track) from the Forever now album has a silimar feel. Thank you for sharing
Hi Lloyd, You are a real Level 42 fan! This is indeed a beautiful song, also Two Solitudes on the Running in the Family album is great with a the Acoustic guitar and solo. I will do this song on acoustic guitar within a few weeks. I also love the Mike Lindup balads. Yesterday I bought a fretless Bass and want to do Lasso the moon. If I can pull that off??? And by the way.................the brothers Gould are very much underestimated. They are so talented! I play guitar very well and can play difficult songs, but I can't copy Boon Gould, also his sounds are awesome!!
@@Johndeleeu Thanks mate you flatter me. I have followed the band closely since 1980. Like many others, I picked up the bass because of Mark King. He was simply the man. As I have mellowed a bit, I tend to prefer the quality rather than quantity of his bass playing. Past lives over say forever now. I am a fan no doubt but your playing far exceeds anything I have accomplished. Keep the faith and thankyou :)
I forgot to mention that Two solitudes is a cracker of a song as well as freedom someday. Some of the best L42 tracks are hidden away on albums. Sleepwalkers, Talking in your sleep, People, Kouyate and Good Man in a Storm - Kansas City Milkman - My Hero etc. I listen to these songs regularly. I cannot remember the last time I listened to Lessons in Love and Something about you.
I love how you can play guitar, too, and it's a Les Paul, like Boon played. I started on guitar, but I suck, so when I went to bass I never looked back. I still own a guitar for recording, but it's minimal. Great video !!!
Thanks Michael, I have a lot more video's with E Guitar and Acoustic Guitar. I started as a keyboard player. I also did "The Essential" from Mark King's solo album with a lot of guitar, Forty Two, Seven Years and Forty Two. Check it out if you like -- th-cam.com/users/Johndeleeuvideos
Yes, this sound more impressive than that it is. I use this a lot. I stole this from another Mark King song where he plays on a record from Nick Kershaw - th-cam.com/video/WqWRHv_zuyU/w-d-xo.html this lick you hear at 0:25, other timing but same patern. This is quit an impressive song, blew my mind when I first heard this.
Nice to see the Status again. Well played with a good groove, John. I'm loving the tour around the B side of World Machine, these are some of their best songs and ones I keep coming back to time and again. Looking forward to seeing you play the fretless.

@@Johndeleeu Tone and articulation when switching from fretted to fretless is always going to be a challenge - that was pretty good after 3 days with a new fretless bass. Looking forward to the next fretless episode.
It's great I love it.
Thanks Colin!

Thanks John!! I keep practicing, so more to come. Enjoy your weekend!
