I think Hyundai's development resulted through analyzing and adapting to the European market. They have their European head quater in Offenbach which is near Frankfurt. And in the city of Frankfurt, there is their Design Center. And in Rüsselsheim, the city of Opel (which belonged to GM, now to Stellantis), they have their technological center. And I used to see their test cars everday driving with trailers and under hard stress. Around the time, when the Golf Mk6 was released, Hyundai presented their new i30. The CEO of VW back than was inspecting the i30 at a exhibiton and was impressed by the build quailty, there is actually a video on TH-cam.
