Jeff Quinn ( www.gunblast.com ) tests the Model 1873 Short Rifle from Winchester Repeating Arms.
I am glad to see that Winchester is once again paying attention to the lever action fans in this country, and there are many. MSRP on this new 1873 is $1299.99 US, as of the date of this review, which is not inexpensive, but it is also priced right in there with the better Italian rifles, such as the Cimarron. Winchester has, over the past few years, sold other Miroku-produced leverguns, and they have all been very well-made rifles. This new 1873 is no exception, and it is good to see the Winchester brand upon the "Gun That Won The West".

We miss you Jeff. I just bought one of these rifles today. Looking forward to shooting it.
After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!
The Winchester lever rifle is still by far the most beautiful rifle ever made bar none.!
I miss this old guy I remember watching one of his videos and he said the great thing about revolvers is they don’t kick the shells out with your dna on them! 😂 I wish I could remember which one he was reviewing. RIP Cowboy
Loved how you tossed your phone.
nammie12345 lmao
I would have been better if he shot it....
nammie12345 hell yeah I almost never bother to comment but I needed to show respect for a true mans man move. You beat me to it. I would have done the same thing
I have a half dozen Winchester’s made in CT. The model 1873 Carbine will be my first Winchester made in Japan & I’ll be proud to own it. Miroku does a really nice job making guns. It’s still a Winchester.
Edit: I’ve put about 650rds in two trips to the creek through my Winchester 1873 Carbine and it’s been fantastic. It’s a great rifle. I stretched it’s legs a little last trip. It’ll hit a pie plate at 170 yards no problem. I used the flip sight set right under 200 yards with some .38’s and hit no problem. The 357 158gr mag will hit with the standard fixed sight easily.
The phone toss at 3:20 made this video. What a wonderful rifle. I want to give one to my father for his birthday.
Still such a beautiful plinker after 140 years. Let's hope for another 140 years of people enjoying this rifle.
The 1873 is the most beautiful Winchester ever made.
Damn straight.
.
My Uberti 1873 recoil reminds me of a 22 rifle when shooting 38 specials in it. Its really amazing just how light the recoil is, the moderate cowboy loads and the weight of the short rifle soak it all up.
luv it how he slings that damn phone for messing with his flow.
Better yet, turn the dam thing off before the review.
Made my day when you chucked the cell phone in the leaves .... :D
Thanks making and sharing this.
The first three seconds of this video is fucking hilarious.
*relaxing acoustic guitar starts playing*

Always good to come across a video of Jeff and his expertise when researching guns. I hope all is well with his folks and that they know.. he is missed.
As an "old-timer", I'm really sad to see that we don't make these in the USA anymore. American craftsmanship is dying in so many ways I hate to say.
You can thank all those laws that incentivise exporting labour
With that MSRP the retail is likely still $1100 or so once the initial price point comes down in a little while. I cannot believe we need to import these things at that price point. Most of the machining is CNC, we can't build these in USA for the same or less money? Hard to believe.
American made means American prices. American worker pay. Etc. It is cheaper to out source.
Welcome to the world of capitalism. The companies are in it for the money, cheaper for them to make. Henry is the only really good american made lever gun. Since the Freedom Group purchased Marlin, things have gone down hill.
Well, I'm willing to pay a little more for excellent craftsmanship. If they farm something out to foreign countries and the quality falls, they can keep their poorly-made stuff.
I wish we could get these made in the states it would be worth the extra cost to me!
This channel is not only the coolest on TH-cam...you get my vote for best soundtrack!
Thank you!

Thumbs up for tossing your cell phone. :)
That was classic
...that was Publisher's Clearing House.
2200fps! That's Ahot! The way you cycle and shoot that gun really looks natural. Like second nature. Must really be a smooth action!
Get's an automatic like for throwing the phone away. ;)
Nice vid sir. I always love old guns like the colt single action and the winchester 73.
Great review. Great lever action!! Thanks.
it's a beautiful one i hope to add to my collection...
Beautiful gun my first deer hunting
Rifle was a marlin 30/30 not sure which model but boy that little brush gun was soo dam accurate
Great video Jeff. gotta love winchester
Thanks for posting the video great as always
Those are beautiful rifles.
Nice video! Thank you for sharing.
Love the video. I literally just read an email saying my tuned up Taylor 1873 was shipped today via ups to my FFL. I've never been so excited about a rifle purchase in my life.
Very nice. Love some lever action rifles.
RIP ,Great channel!
Beautiful wood and blueing.
I'm glad I bought my 1873 Carbine in .357/38. The price of .44-40 is high as hell, and ain't available just anywhere. Besides, 357 is a faster round and can be had for a bargain if you catch it on sale.
I hope you're in a place with many many firearms to play with, so you're in paradise for eternity...RIP my friend!
Beautiful gun!
Beautiful rifle!
I love the way you talk, accent and everything. Reminds me of my granddad. Love the videos
I have a couple of Browning mod.78 high walls, well one now as I sold the one in .45-70...Regret that. They were both made by Miroku and quality is excellent .It would be nice though if the Winchester lever guns were made in Columbia SC.just like the excellent model 70 is.
Great review! I want one. 38 / 357....that's for me.
i picked this rifle up with a case hardened receiver, its even more beautiful.
great gun - great video !
Jeff, I really have to say, I enjoy the music as much as your vids, maybe more !!!
Thanks, I really appreciate that.
Boge
And it's available in .44-40. Thank God!Love that caliber! Big bore hard hittin' and yet so light on recoil your baby sister can shoot it all day long. What more can you want? And the price point isn't much higher than what I've seen Uberti's listing for in DGW. I wonder if Miroku is making the .44-40 with the same oversized bore(.432) like Uberti does(according to the specs I read in DGW catalog). Why do they do that? .44-40 class bullets don't break .4295 diameter.
Got my 1873 in .45 LC. My handloads (Lee 250 gr RNFP/7.5 gr Unique), once I replaced the sights with a folding leaf rear and MVS globe front, once I got zeroed, shot ragged 5 shot holes at 25 yards. Next range time out to 50 and 100. I am waiting for Marbles or *someone* to produce a tang sight made specifically for this rifle - current ones are made for Uberti's and are not angled correctly. .
Ordered one. Should get it some time this week. Oh I'm from Ontario, Canada.
Love Lever Action :)
Any Caliber.. But Have only tried 30-30
Good video and good job !
it is the most beatiful gun in the world the winchester 1873 in 44 40 i love it this is the gun that i youse tums upp
Those 125g 357 rounds sounds amazing.
I had been looking for one of those until my local shop had a Henry .357/38
Nice looking rifle!
Completely satisfied.
Thinking about getting into cowboy action, can you please recommend a revolver that would match this rifle, I reload 38 special, love the videos
Nice to see someone else that shoots left handed.
If I was ever to buy a beginners rifle, it would be this. Gorgeous!!
Miroku has been making the Model 92 for Winchester and Browning since the early 80s. Winchester discontinued these models almost a 100 yrs ago because the demand dropped off. When interest in the 66 ,73,and 92 returned due mostly to Cowboy Action Shooting, Winchester preferred to license Miroku to make the guns, rather than spend the money to retool, so foreign companies aren't taking business away, American businesses are giving it away.
Wow that's an eye opener. Thanks for sharing. Now I know where that beautiful Browning model 1886 .45-70 with the dark, rich, lustrous blueing and tapered round barrel came from that I saw at a gun show in western Carolina some 25 years ago. $895.00 he wanted for that. I didn't have two nickles to rub together back then. Never cross paths with that a second time around, will I?
Pena q não temos aqui no Brasil
Jeff, you’re now where the mandolins always play, the smell of hickory and oak scent the light mountain summer breeze and the unmistakable smell of burnt gunpowder and gun oil keep you satisfied. So long partner, save a stool at the bar for us.
I have one of these in .45 colt, it’s so good to be an American.
nice video
This is a great rife for shooting CAS. I have it in 357/38.
Current opinions?
Love it
So glad my great great grandfather past this down
I just won a GB auction on one made in 1888 in 38-40. I saw it today, better than the pics. Not cheap though.
Can someone explain the difference between the 94 carbine, 94 short and 94 sporter? Are there more benefits to each size?
joe well in uberti terms the carbine has a 19in round. arrel and barrel bands on it, usually has a saddle ring. the short rifle is a 20in rifle with octagonal barrel and the sporting rifle is a 24.25in octagonal barrel. like the one in the video
What powder did you use? It doesn't look like black powder because I can't see much smoke.
IMR Trail Boss.
jeff
I’m a lefty too. How did you get the shell to eject to the left side?
The 1873 ejects upwards, that's as close as you'll get on a lever-action.
Boge
I want to buy a 73 fan someone tell what company kakes the best cimmaron winchester Japan or any other
Ok, threw your phone away. Finally subscribed. Like a lot of shit you do.
Great Rifle... I want to pitch my phone like that all day! lol
it s my favoritt rifle cool gun tums upp
I know they make it in 44-40, but I'm hoping for a .44 spl model :-)
That crimp looks way beyond even a normal heavy crimp. Is it advisable to run the crimp that hard on cast loads?
QUESTION : on the Winchester online site , looking at the Model 1873 short rifle ,
one caliber listing says : 357-38 , while looking at the Model 1892 large loop carbine ,
one caliber listing says 357MAG ( no "-38spl" designation mentioned ).
Is this merely a typo OR is Winchester saying , 38spl will not feed properly in the
Model 1892 , but will feed properly in the Model 1873 ???
uconnapharm
38 Special should feed just fine in that ‘92.
jeff
Gunblastdotcom thank you Jeff ; I truly appreciate your prompt response.
I think the decision has now been made , to treat myself to a Model 1892 in 357 as a 4th of July gift to myself.
Dam have an 1894 but it's only a co2 bb gun but it uses real shells fun gun
Keep up the great reviews 😎🇦🇺👍
Jeff what is the difference between the Winchester 1873 and the Winchester 1892? Is one faster then the other?
They are both fast and slick, with the ‘73 design usually being smoother, but the ‘92 is much stronger.
jeff
Gunblastdotcom Thank you.
I want this rifle in .45colt caliber the same caliber as the army used in they're single action army revolvers !!!!
Thank-you for the review! Given the original design wasn't intended for modern cartridges, do you think this gun will hold up to the 35,000+ PSI .357 rounds? Or should it only be loaded lightly?
Yes, it should hold up very well over time.
jeff
Jimmy870 ive shot all kinds of factory .357mag out of my uberti, these are great guns! im sure u will be fine with all factory ammo
Chris Kelly84 Awesome, thank-you! I was worried about the toggle links and their apparent lack of ability to take high PSI.
Jimmy870 ya my uberti even handles my reloads.... but ya for factory ammo the federal 357 stuff is not fun to shoot a bunch of rounds with but in my lever gun its sweeettttt.
Thought that cell phone might catch a round. :)
Anyone else stay till the end of the song?
weren't there lever guns made in the late stages of the civil war? early Henry models?
Yes sir, the Confederates who knew of it called it "that damned yankee rifle that they load on sunday and shoot all week."
Yes there were. We recently did a video and text review on the new Henry.
Shooting "The Original Henry" 44 WCF Rifle, Made in the USA by Henry Repeating Arms- Gunblast.com
Jeff
Would you say that this rifle is safe to shoot fairly hot .357 loads? Or even as far to ruger only loads?
Zachary Mortensen
You can shoot any 357 magnum loads in this rifle.jeff
+Zachary Mortensen I have this gun. 125 jacketed soft point, 21.8 grains of W296, cci 550 primer. Around 2000 feet per second. It feels like a 30-30 with this load.
I really wonder why winchester usa never did reproduction of the 73 they just give up and moved to Japan , pike smith and wesson is doing now whit the classics ,colt should bring back the phyton and the detective 38 revolvers ,Us gun lovers. Will support our American gun companies Just listen to our needs do what the motorcycle companies did go out and make what we want to buy before moving the company overseas.
Update for you my friend. I saw an ad in American Rifleman ,I think, from Colt for the new .38Spl+P snub-nosed Cobra. Hooray! You maybe getting your wish. Hope the trend continues. I wanna see the old slender barrel(four inch) fixed-sighted FBI .38s like the S&W M10 come back1 But I'm a dreamer.
Shows you how much I know. I thought it was the Colt Single Action that was named "The Gun That Win The West"
GoG didn't have any in stock. Hope they get some soon.
Since it's a import, like the others, other than the name, what's the benefit compared to the others? Seems like you get better quality/features from the other italian manuf's.
Have you had any problems cycling 38 special out of this since this video was made ? Thank you for all of you videos. ..you da a great job!!!
I have not. My cousin bought the gun, and he says it runs well with 38 Special.
jeff
Good to know. ..thanks for the info.
You will only have cycling problems if you shoot round tip bullets
@@dannyramzinski2631 Not true
Why not an octagon barrel? That’s the reason they would factory order a 20” octagon barrel sporting rifle in the old days in stead of an off the shelf carbine with a 20” round barrel.
Don't buy guns very often, but just put a bid in on one of these, in .45 Colt, to match my USFA Henry Nettleton. Your review helped...a very pretty rifle. Think it'll see a lot of BP shooting.....you are always entertaining, as is the 'Battle Cry' banjo music. Thanks!
Thank you, sir, for the compliment on my music. I have a pretty decent collection of USFA sixguns, so I know how NICE those Nettletons are. I don't have one of those.
Boge
Gunblastdotcom Yes, your music is inspiring enough for me to consider taking up the banjo at the ripe old age of 60. Also....I'll never forgive Chris McDonnell for killing his USFA SAA business in favor of - for the love of God - a plastic .22. His penance will be to sell used Yugo's for his remaining days. I really wanted a classic B/CH 4 3/4 .45..now I'll have to settle for a Colt when I can find one.
Ares Koumis
They turn up for sale every now and then. Email me at boge@gunblast.com, and I'll let you know if I find one.
Gunblastdotcom You are a gentleman, sir - thank you!
pinkiewerewolf Indeed sir, my email is oldcorps76@gmail.com. Look forward to the conversation!
Nice.
What ammo should i look at buying aswell?
Jake Harvey if you don't want to spend a whole lot on a box of ammo, .357 mag and. 38 special is your choice. if you want authenticity, 44wcf would be it but at 35 to 40 bucks for a box of 50. it isn't worth it unless for the previous reason and if you reload, also 45 colt if you want a 45 caliber
nah bro i'm in england there illegal here i dunno where to find ammo
Would buy it but I can't get past an American icon being made in Japan and owned by FN.
Guess they have got better ,had one some years ago and fit and finish was horrible as was the action.sent back twice and they couldn't get it right.some excuse about moving manufacturing and equipment suffered and needed retooled.glad to see a better effort but sad to see Winchester not made in US of A
It's a crying shame that our gov't has printed so much worthless paper money that it is the cause for raising the cost of this rifle to such a ridiculous price, along with everything else.
That rear sight did the old timers used to call them "buck horns"?
The buckhorn sight makes much more of an upward curl on the outside. The semi-buckhorn, as shown here, is not as pronounced as is the full buckhorn.
jeff
The best move you made was throwing away the cell phone.
nice
Does that fire a buckshot ?
No, it does not fire 410 shotshells.
Boge
Lol good vid...nice rifle. ..that's what I'm talking about just throw that cell phone..
Lol
Classic phone throw @ 3:22.
