    @1:35 I believe the rules also permit the lever action 1887 Winchester style lever shotgun, AKA the Terminators gun (although some argue that specific gun was a 10ga).

  • @jeredhunter8733
    @jeredhunter8733 11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The buffalo guns at the time (think Quigley Down Under) were "big-bore" rifles. The Sharps High Wall (45-70 to 45-120) and several other styles of lever guns like the Trap Door were in larger calibers up to 50-140. Mostly cowboys and scouts used only one kind of ammunition because it was easier to stock on their person. In that case you might have a rifle and two pistols both in 44-40 or 45lc. However, they wouldn't have been hunting buffalo or animals of that nature with a 44-40.

    I did this for 2 seasons. It's all he says it is. My biggest surprise was how good many of them are, boys and girls, young and old. My problem was boredom between stages even with the work assignments. There is a lot of time and money required to practice, reload ammo, and keep up with the guns for about two and a half minutes of shooting. It is fun for sure, and the shooting is great, just not enough of it. Kind of like parking lot Solo car racing. Also in these videos they don't cover the military type safety rules they use. These rules are 100% necessary to ensure 100% safety, but some people can't do it. I've seen it, and people do get invited to stop shooting for the match or permanently. They can and will pull your badge if you screw up. Literally by rule everybody is a safety Nazi in SASS. In my club it was a violation of the rules to see a safety violation and fail to call it out. Lots of ex Navy guys around here. lol
    It will make a better shooter out you if that is what you are interested in. And you'll have fun doing it.

      The time between sounds just like IDPA and CMP “across the course” disciplines. Shooting and fellowship is great. The down time between bottle necked stages will wear you down and take 3/4’s to a full day.

    Nice video but when going through the firearms, would be nice to know what calibers are used in competitions.

    • @Vincerama
      @Vincerama 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably .45 Colt, .44-40, .38 Special, .357 Mag, .38 long colt (with the three all in the same .357 mag revolver). .38 special would be the most economical. Purists would use the .45 or the .44-40. The revolvers in .45 Colt would actually be lighter than the .38s because they external barrel dimensions for the "cowboy" revolvers are the same, but the bore is smaller for .38s so the .38s will have thicker barrels.

Would I still be able to use such weapons if they were used soley in single action, or is it a hard cutoff if it has double action capabilities?

    She will be amazed at how friendly "cowboys" are. The sport encompasses people from all walks of life. When we're dressed as cowboys, you don't know whether you're talking to an Arkansas hillbilly (me) or a federal judge.
    It's hard to be too serious when you're playing cowboy...but with real guns...and you go by an alias...which means that you will become friends before you know people's real name.

You should be aware that Levi Strauss is one of the bigger "anti-gun" contributors and are very vocal about gun control. You can Google "Levi Strauss' anti gun advocacy". Hey Long Hunter, I've got a question for ya if you've got the time. I'm 23, a full-time college student, part-time US Army, and part-time gun salesman at my local gun store. I've been interested in joining SASS ever since I first watched this video a few years ago. Not long ago I bought a lever-action rifle I intend to use in the sport. As a college student, I just couldn't afford an 1873, a '66, or an actual Henry, and I wasn't crazy about the newer Marlins or Rossi's. So, since I couldn't find a used Marlin, I ended up going with a Henry Big Boy in .45 Colt. I read the SASS rule book, so I know they're legal, but after looking on some of the forums, I've noticed that there are a lot of members who have some really bad things to say about the rifle. I know right off the bat that I will not be as competitive as some of y'all with experience, but are the (new) Henry's really that frowned upon? I know they're not authentic in any way and can only be used in B Western, but I'd love to know what you think about the gun and the folks that use them. Thanks!

      They are cheap made pot metal guns, 'henry' had to "really work" on the SASS Wild Bunch to get them accepted. But money has RULED SASS & the wild bunch since they deserted Southern Calif. practically in the middle of the night. They pulled up on monday morning after the last End of Trail at RAAHAUGE'S Pheasent Club. Took everything from the COTO COWBOYS that wasn't nailed down. even their Club's Name.

      @@walksfletcher If I somehow screwed up and ended up in California, I'd grab everything I could and get the hell out too! Once the Beach Boys left, the whole state just slid off into lunacy, idiocy, and pot heads with no common sense!

      @@kennoneya4671 You Don't SCREW the folks who spent YEARS working for FREE to build up SASS and steal everything that isn't nailed down. Targets, Equipment, building supplies and even the Name of their Club. Most all of that gear was donated by Members. All props & displays built by VOLUNTEERS who donated their time and money.
      The wild bunch showed up at 8am the day after EOT ended with a hired moving service. Took everything that wasn't nailed down, without a by your leave. All the wild bunch has done is line their own pockets.
      The Rules have been bent and twisted to allow the introduction of rule changes that were supposed to be chiseled in stone.
      "SPIRIT OF THE GAME" Was murdered by the greed of the wild bunch. I started in 1987, I quit in 2009. Could no longer recognize what sass stood for. Dues are now Outrageous.
      The sport is dying. Gamers & greed killed it.

      Mustang Gun Carts on etsy sells some really nice high quality old west gun carts. Otherwise, Cabelas and other sporting good stores have the new baby cart looking ones. You can also try craigslist for a nice second hand cart.

    Dumb question, but do the pair of Single Action revolvers have to be the same caliber? I have one in .357 mag and a separate one in 45 LC. Do I need to get another one to have a matching pair to shoot in a match?

      I don't think its required John. Here's the handbook off the SASS site. Its all in there. www.sassnet.com/Downloads/Shooters%20Handbook%20%20Vers%2022_2.pdf

      I actually met a guy in my local grocery store about..2 months ago and we got to talking cause I liked his overcoat and hat he was wearing, it was a stormy day hence his duster overcoat. We talked about forging, zombie movies/shows and interestingly enough Cowboy Action shooting. He told me a good tip is to 1)not go with the .45 revolver since ammo for that is expensive 2) to have your revolvers match your rifle in caliber so you don't have to carry too many different types of ammo so the best thing you can do is make sure your revolvers and rifles all match for the sake of not getting your guns confused and cost effectiveness when buying ammo for shooting.

    • @KadSkirita
      @KadSkirita 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short response is no. None of your calibers have to match. But it does help if you shoot one caliber across the two revolvers and the rifle.

    You mentioned if you use a '94 Marlin, it must be shot as "B" Western class, Only? My wife shoots one just like the one shown, and shoots Lady Wrangler, and nobody has said anything about it! We are going to Mississippi Fandango in October, and have already registered. Does she need to change class, for a SASS state shoot?

    Look into IPSC or USPSA or IDPA shooting. It's with modern pistols but you can shoot a revolver division too (double action if you want to be competitive). There is no dressup ... I guess you COULD, but if you want to look into single pistol action shooting, look to there!
