We find a 1930's Utility Tunnel under the River Hull | Abandoned Engineering

- This is Under The Surface. Harry and Andy will be visiting and documenting the Service and Utility Tunnels that are largely forgotten about. This episode was filmed underneath Kingston Upon Hull.
The tunnel was completed in 1931 and was to originally carry the power cables for the tram system that ran on the surface. Designed by T Thomas, a City Engineer, and built by Widnes Foundry. Other pipes and cables began to use the tunnel in the mid to late 1930's to protect them from the threat of War, which came in 1939. It is unclear if this was ever used as a air raid shelter, the lack of signage or makeshift additions makes it seem unlikely.
This tunnel is still in regular use by utility companies and is a important route for data and power that connects two sides of Hull via the diverted River Hull.
The tunnel now carries High Voltage, Fibre Optic data and Telephone Cables.
This Series will be shown to the Channel Members in advance of going public on the main TH-cam Channel.

🤣 I nearly spat my water out in the gym 😂😂
I remember Mr Dixon’s video well 👻👻👻
You Already Know 😁
This wasn't the same tunnel so didn't have a time machine in it 🤷♂️😂
@@harryrobinson-clark2249 No ghosts either 👻👻👻

Incredible, working through your back catalogue, better than anything on TV 😀
Wow, thanks! TV isn's very good anymore. Their loss ha ha. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
An interesting video and chat today. An informative subject. Thanks for the tour, Andy! Cheers buddy! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it Martin, it sure was a fun explore and to think we were under the River Hull. Thanks for watching and Commenting 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Interesting to see this kind of stuff. Thanks for posting.
Hello there :)
Thanks for being a channel member. I’m glad you enjoyed the video :)
th-cam.com/video/_eedI9XhSP4/w-d-xo.html i found this one riveting as i started my working life yards from the entrance without ever knowing it existed back in 1983
Quality buddy
Thank you mike :)
Brilliant. Must have been a bit unnerving walking next to the HV cables knowing you were in a metal tunnel with plenty of potential for water ingress. Very cool video 😀
Yes it sure was Urbexy! The HV cables were sat silently at 11Kv and the tunnel has survived the Blitz so hopefully it will remain intact for many years to come :)
another great video mate
Thank You Kernow :)
very interesting video! absolutely loved to see the piece of history 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it Bejoy :)
Fantastic stuff.
Hey Yorkie, thanks very much
Enjoyed this video. That tunnel is so creepy its unreal! liked.
Thank you very much indeed. We have filmed another couple of these to come out at some point. Many projects on the go
@@ALWResearchTeam awesome. Me n my friends visiting a place in April. Can't wait. So much fun
Nice find
Thanks bro
Awesome just stumbled upon your channel (Jarvis, sorry couldn't resist 😉) been a local i found this very interesting thanks Mr ... subbed 👍👍✌
Hello there :)
More to come in the future
Great little video, Andy. Very interesting to see the layout of the tunnel and the construction method. Wonder what kind of paint did they use to protect the interior. Looked like some sort of japaning or russian kuzbass tar pitch. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing, mate.
Good question! I didn't look at the finish too much but it looked to be a protective paint similar to what was applied to ships of the similar age. Thank you so much for watching and commenting :)
@@ALWResearchTeam Always a pleasure, mate. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Alot of rust down there..great video
There certainly was. Thanks so much :)
Excellent, always good to see the foundations of Hull.
Have you considered doing a review of the old nuclear bunker just outside Patrington and Kilnsea.
Hello there Phillip, We have been to the Bunker but not the AAOR near the caravan park but would like to at some point :)
No light switch on the way in :) See the lights on the ceiling and down the ladder side. Nice video. 1931 and still going, fun if some workman came along. sprung
They were all tucked up in bed :)
The water bank area is a long way from the river hull at the start Andy but you are a prince they should name a avenue after you .😃
Hi Carl, b roll footage from around town :)
I’m not from money or the elite so no chance of recognition
@@ALWResearchTeam I pulling your leg Andy water bank = spring bank and princes avenue.😀
🤣
Wow you really know your cables
Thank you for watching and commenting :)
is the large pipe anything to do with the old reckits steam line or maybe the ground breaking hydraulic system developed in hull used for raising bridges over the river, (former pump house based near scott street the last bridge removed) made famous most recently by a "Banksy" painting
Hello there, I did film the reckitts pipeline a few years back. the ones going under the river filmed here are utilities for the local authority
Very interesting. Quite some time ago I heard/read that there is a tunnel large enough for vehicles connecting Hull to Paull (Fort).
Can't be true, can it?
It could be ;)
Why ?
Theres another tunnel that goes under the river Hull ive been to, but that one was worse in shape.
Interesting. How old are these tunnels?
Hi Anthony, these tunnels were originally built in the 1930’s to carry power lines for the tram system above
