  • RetroTINK-5X Pro is a FPGA-powered upscaler that allows you to hook up retro video game consoles and computers for use on modern day TVs. In this video, I test 30 different consoles, computers, and add-ons and share my results. More Info here: www.retrotink.com/

    Hey John - thank you so much for doing this! It's an incredible tour!
    Just want to throw out that if you got one of the DC cables from RGC or RA that support 480p -- it'll look incredible! The 480i from the cheap ones is okay, but DC is definitely worth the upgrade.

    i LOVE the TI-99/4A mention. It was my first computer, and first video game system. I hardly ever see it on retro gaming videos. So many great games, so far ahead of it's time (with speech synthesizer).. It came out the year i was born, the education software was so beneficial to my early childhood education. Hope you can do more videos of that system in the future. More games to check out for the system: Car Wars, Hopper, ATTACK!, Jungle Hunt.

    Well... I guess I eventually going to get one of these to not have to switch upscalers depending on my consoles, I (at the time of this comment) use the classic Retrotink 2X for my Ps1, Ps2, N64, Wii, NES and SNES, and the Retrotink 2X SCART for my Genesis model 2 (which I need to get a better SCART cable to get rid of the jail-thingy... but at least is way better than composite... while I can somehow tolerate the blurry image from composite, it is a headache in the long run).

  • @SilentMott

    One thing worth considering is the RGB mod for N64. Its much cheaper than the HDMI mod, and when combined with the RetroTink 5X-Pro it makes for great results. I would say overall that option is more cost effective and yields equal result to the HDMI or really close to it.
    For DreamCast, Retro-Access and Retro Gaming Cables makes a SCART cable with switch on it to be able to play games in RGB and VGA modes, makes for great results as well with the RetroTink.

    This is on the list to buy. Looks nice. less tinkering. Does fast resolutions switching as well. downscaling is in alpha at your own risk with other stuff added to it.
    -GBS-Control came out also. Id say is a newer Framemeister. since it isn't fpga based. It offers a bit of lag, prob less. I never noticed the Framemeister lag. does down scaling also if ur hooking up to a certain pvm.
    -OSSC pro is coming out soon. IDK when. I bet it will be a killer product with lots of settings and inputs. I hope for easy profiles. I hear it will offer to play fpga cores on it. making nes and atari or something that doesn't offer rgb a bit better. You can still hook those consoles however you want thou, modded or not, i bet it will look sweet still. MiSTer would be better overall for cores.
    -Another scalier coming, idk name or what it will offer.
    Im still using the Framemeister for pretty much everything. My newer tv didn't have component and still have the wii hooked up to the framemiester.
    OSSC, retro tink 2x and even the Framemeister if you still have it are grate options.
    I think ill upgrade when i see one i like the most. I need something that changes resolutions better for saturn and 480p upscaled nicely.
    I hope one day we get a nice 4k or even 8 k scalier. There was a artical about if there was a scalier for 8k it would be able to scale the pixles perfectly.

    I just loaded up Desert Strike on the Genesis, and I noticed the same blue border that's on Sonic and Final Fight in the video. Interesting thing is I'm not using an external upscaler. It's direct composite out to the composite in on my TV. So it must be the Genesis itself, not the Retrotink.

    i seem to be the odd man out here . But i think the cleaner the out put on old 8 and 16 bit systems..and higher the resolution the worse they look .. the pixels get unbearably chunky. I have found that going composite to retro tink then into an HD-CRT with HDPT turned on gives best of both worlds. smooth pixels ... way closer to how you remember them from back in the day but also no visible scanlines and no lag.

    Really, no Pippin, one of the greatest classic gaming systems?

    Actually the NUON is kinda the jaguar 2., cause was made by the same creators of the jaguar., also the NUON is not only a dvd that can play videogames., is a technology alternative to the DVD itself., was a format that competed against DVD and lost., and had the same idea than the 3DO, meaning sell the license to companies to make their own nuon

    Can you test an Atari 2600? Games like spider man are really finicky with my retrotink 2x.

      +1 I am only able to use an original retrotink (pre-2x) with my Atari 2600. Nothing else works well. I am curious if the 5x has any magic for the 2600

      I just watched another video of someone using the 5x on an Atari 7800 which played both the 2600 + 7800 titles. Might be worth switching to one of those.

    Guys, my quest for a 4k TV with component female ports continues.
    Simply becaus ei have Psyclone Component Cables for PS2
    and the uber rare & expensive Green Xbox Component cables
    (not to be confused with the cheaper $40 ones that also work on the Xbox360)
    These Green ones ar ethe ones that were $140 @ Circuit City when Xbox Lquanched.
    I tracked em down a couple years ago only for my Xbox to be busted from moisture basement damage. ugh.
    ~~FU Goodwill for being greedy with ur lame ebay store.

    I have to be honest. The output doesn’t look good for a $300 device. To make a point of its benefits an a/b comparison with something looking worse would probably be worthwhile.

      The device is amazing and a game changer for capturing footage.

    • @espressomatic
      @espressomatic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnhancockretro totally agree for capture. But for sitting down and playing it’s a hard sell at the current price. This looks and performs like a sub 100$ product. The color fringing on some of the examples was glaring. The N64 output was pretty bad - but maybe that’s as good as it gets for that one. I’d really recommend doing testing with the simplest cabling possible and with the best signal out possible for some of the systems where you’ve used something else. Such as trying RGB scart for SNES, Genesis, PS1 and PS2. Even an Amiga (your CDTV) using RGB output.
      I strongly suspect there’s a cash grab happening in the hobby due to a vacuum-like situation and lack of options. Story might be different if OSSC pro weren’t complete vaporware.

    • @johnhancockretro
      @johnhancockretro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@espressomatic This is not a sub $100 product. I have had several devices help me capture and this is the best out there right now. You want in depth coverage of this go check out Retro RGB/My Life in Gaming. This product has been universally praised and does great things for retro consoles and computers. The price of the product is high but dont let that fool you into thinking this product isn't valuable. While not for everyone, this product is rock solid.

    • @pokepress
      @pokepress 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnhancockretro The device does about as much as it can with that kind of signal. There’s a reason composite Vs. S-video tends to be the dividing line between “eh” and “pretty good” for standard definition connections. I’d say the HUD looks pretty good in Castlevania, though.
