Insane! I'm surprised the scooter sat there the whole time. If it had been around here they would've jumpout even in front of the Tri-rail. Our sheeple are brazen. If there isn't a cross-bar and lights are flashing there's still potential for crossing! My neighborhood has a spur that runs up to what is left of the Dupont plant several miles up the track. The line snakes over one major thoroughfare and cut left crossing another road U.S. 70. The craziness is such that the two roads create a major intersection within 30 to 50 feet from these two railroad crossings. There is a shortline local that carries raw materials and furnished products for transfer Monday through Friday excluding holidays. The can operate from 9 am until I've seen them run as late as 6;30 pm and keep in mind the intersection is a busy one with traffic backing up for 200 to 300 feet. I have seen vehicles stopped on the railroad crossing. I refuse to stop on the track. People look at me like I'm crazy but they don't realize a train can come along at any time of the day. That's not a risk I want to take. I have seen cars stop the train because the train wasn't going that fast they have a safety record to protect but, one of these days I fear even that won't be enough.

Those MB36phs are so ugly. F40phs were so awesome! Coaster, a service near/in San Diego has 5 f40s, which is 5/7 of the fleet. The other 2 are f59phis but next year f40phs will be retired!
Because there was the possibility that some motorists knowing the gates were malfunctioning would drive around the gates while the train was approaching.

Yeah, that is exactly what I mean. In Japan, the railroad signals and train systems run a lot smoother, now granted Japan does focus a lot more on trains but for the amount of trains running in Japan compared to the US, I'm surprised the US can't get simple things like railroad crossings working correctly. There seems to always be some kind of malfunction with them, whether it's the gates won't go up or down or the signals won't activate all together stopping both the trains and the on-coming traffic causing delays to both sides.
If you tie it up cars would be still going across the tracks when another train approached. As inconvenient as it is, it's better that the gates remain down when malfunctioning rather than remain up.

If the railroad gates didn't go down I would find out the problem if there was a misfire on the wire to see if it could be fixed then the gates would go up.
normally this you need to call local or state police for traffic control then they can communicate with the rail company who coming from where on what tracks. Its illegal to help people through crossing unless its police. if a citizens help the public they are responsible and liable

This happens in my country a lot of times, everywhere, as a result of bastard Governments who chose technology over man-power. Just look at another way around, if such technology as electronic operated rail crossings did not exist, tell me what other option would there have been? Of course there would have been many options, like the options they had in the past before electrifying the world. Of course there would have another way for both trains and cars to cross without stopping, without delays and without accidents (the Romans did it. Was there any electricity?). but nooo! The Government couldn't careless about it all, about delays, about accidents, or ever think that each vehicle that is stopped at a train crossing means delays for motorists (and emergengy vehicles rushing sick patient to hospitals, fire and police) trying to get through the crossing. The Government is more interested in wasting billions in wars without any cause, just because they feel like it, just so to prove to the rest of the world how mighty the American 'armada' is. And while they waste tremendous amount of billions on miltary and naval exercises worldwide, they couldn't careless on the situation with the transport system, health care, homeless and returned veterans at home. And this is an example of the state the road and transport system is today, since they removed the manpower, destroyed employment and replaced with the ever noisy ding-ding-ding boom gates and creating further delays and pollution as each vehicle will move off (after the train has passed) on 1st, 2nd, 3rd... gear, accelerating to the permitted speed. The same with traffic controlled intersections, stop-move at snail pace from one intersection to another, polluting the air and making everyone sick as fumes are invisible and poisonous. And what does the Government do? Well, a quick slip-slop-slap, widen the crossings, throw in some ding-ding-ding tech stuff and it's done, it's finished. Meanwhile the money they throw way on senseless and unnecessary wars and military/naval drills, including millions of free money for those other bastards Israel and you will be wondering why these crossings are never going to be improved by building bridges for either the railways or the roads and cut down delays and pollution. Did you know that when a vehicle cruises at 100kph on top gear it wastes less fuel and creates less pollution than a vehicle that constantly start off in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or more gears under considerable accelleration wastes more fuel and creates more pollution with a small percentage of fuel not burned properly, can you imagine the millions of vehicles doing this creating enough pollution that makes living in the cities toxic and deadly? Have you ever thought about this next time you cough blood, fall sick and end on the death bed? I don't think so, because if you did, you would do your best in helping the environment by stopping to support car racing and other petrolhead sports. But, nooo! No way you would do that. Why would the conductor walk ahead of the train with a flag? The gates wouldn't have affected the tracks in any way.
