Did you guys do the underwater visibility test? Can't find it. Not sure if humans looking will be representative of what fish see, or what's important to them, but would be curious. The more I see people catch fish....the more stupid I think fish are. haha, But would like to see more science.

IMHO this has been some of the best
news for me. The difference between
the two is so negligible that it's truly worthy
to consider the cost for any appreciable
    quantities of leader being used.
    Good stuff... Thanks !!!

I'm 53 and have been fishing in one way or another for 45 years. I started out knowing nothing and progressed absorbing everything I could about the subject. As gear and lures got better and better, the one constant has been Berkley Trilene XL and Stren Original on my reels, From Zebco spin casters to spinning reels then to top quality bait casters, the main line on my reels has been XL. I have been catching fish, my friends have been catching fish, all with $5.99 mono line, We left line on our reels for LONG periods of time and just kept fishing it and still catching fish. Ask the Bass Masters how they caught fish in the 70's and 80's without Fluorocarbon lines. Is it really better? You be the judge but dont forget, many of the bass tournament fishermen are sponsored by line companies. They can get all the line they want for free. Of course they are going to use the expensive line. The average guy? Use what makes you happy. I just dont feel I need it.

I have fished many tournaments for bass in Clearwater. I think you guys hit on a subject! When mono is cast on top of the water it tends to sit on top of the water, throwing a slight shadow which I think spooks fish. When floral carbon is cast on top of the water it immediately sinks so it’s underwater,so I think it cost less of a shadow, therefore more fish might be spooked from it laying on top of the water! I would like to see the lines tested in sunlight vertical and horizontal for the visual difference! Most fish whether they are predators,or prey have predators.lines moving on top of the water spook fish that’s why I think floral carbon is better in shallow clear water it sinks immediately. In my experience just like your test monofilament is much stronger!

I fish a lot in super clear shallow water poling for reds and have switched to flouro and have had great success. Less stretch also with flouro

I wonder how old that spool of fluoro is? Does it show a date of manufacture? I do know that the highly acclaimed online tackle critics: "Tackle Tour" give high praise to Berkley/Trilene Big Game mono for fantastic shelf life. The chief editor ( I can't recall his name ) once told the story of being invited to go offshore fishing at the last minute before departure. He was in a rush, stopped by his house, and simply grabbed one of his offshore rigs already spooled with the Big Game mono. He stated as they were on their way in the boat, he began to worry about "how old the line was on his reel". He said he caught plenty of fish, and had zero issues with "aged line". He also said that after giving it some thought, the Big Game mono on his reel was incredibly old. Just sayin'. I used fluoro almost exclusively for 4 years. But I began to realize I was having far more line breakage issues than ever before, even though I made it a point to retie often. I eventually got so fed up, I switched back to Big Game mono. The majority of my line breakage issues vanished. Seriously. I use 8 different rod & reel set-ups ( baitcasters ), so I'm also saving a lot of money on fishing line alone. I still use braid on spinning tackle of course.

    Copolymer mono.
Flouro gets very weak after stressing it a couple of times, something a lot of people don’t know. A few stress events can weaken flouro by 50%, casts poorly, is not good with knots, and is less abrasion resistant.
The slight difference in underwater visibility (very slight) doesn’t come close to making up for that

A couple of points if I may gentlemen. You spoke of comparing bases on diameter vs line strength. I easily see that comparing based on size is more scientifically valid BUT for it's intended use, fishing, don't we select our line based on strength rather than diameter so perhaps testing should do the same?
Secondly, on the refraction or reflection argument, perhaps it in large part doesn't matter. I feel that the underlying point is really line visibility. If the line is visible enough to the fish it will spook the fish, period. To better understand refraction, google the glass and glycerin refraction trick. It's very cheap to do yourself with materials from Wal-mart. Sure, there are other factors but if the fish cannot see the line they are not spooked and if they can see it they may well be spooked. So what really matters is how visible it may be. Consider that the line may be visible in some situations from reflection and in some from refraction but it's the "total" visibility that really matters. If we can see it, it's a fairly sure bet the fish can see it. If a line is better in reflection it's a good thing but only if it's refraction isn't so bad as to make it visible anyway the reflective qualities matter little.
Without question an excellent post and a great opening discussion of the subject. Thank you for your work!
    Oh, monofilament in all cases.

We both used the same lures, gold spoons rigged identically with 3 foot fluorocarbon leaders. My buddy took his own rod & reel filled w 10 pound PowerPro. I used the guide’s rod filled with Andre back country 10 pound mono. We casted to the same pods, however I caught 4 fish for each of his one. I’m convinced they could see his braided line and not my mono? I love braid however still want to spool with mono?

Mono will have a lower tone or sound moving through water. Floro will have a higher pitch. It has to do with the softness over the hardness of lines. I havent come up yet with whitch one would be louder. I have to say floro would be louder to the human ear. The reason I say this is if you string a guitar with floro vs mono it will give you a pretty good understanding of the sounds and pitches the lines are capable of. But the question is what sounds do the fish hear better...... These questions lead to answers we have never thought of before.

Hey guys thanks a lot for the content :) Is it possible to repeat Luke's abrasion resistance experiment while having all lines in water for 1, 2 and 5 hours? Since the fluorocarbon manufacturers claim they have better abrasion resistance with respect to mono it might be based on the waterproof property of fluoro. If mono wins again then its a clear sign that what the companies claim is wrong and they should clarify the conditions under which they tested the lines. In any case for all of us who use mono as leader line will be a perfect test to know how often we shall change our leader. Demian

Gentelmen if any of you could just put those lines under a lighted microscope to see the reflexion or refracion or the clearness as close to water because at the end I don`t even think the fish care about what`s hanging as a line ( they don`t understand what a line is that a human view ) ,they care about how the bait is presented or if it is even eatable because it is not in their diet or a familiar color to just gulp it , if the bait looks good they will bite otherwise they leave it alone because it might kill them and when people talk about they smell it ,maybe , if the bait has been sitting in the same spot for a while ... is seen from underwater hunting how fish look at food , I bust scallops with my flat pry to get the muscle to loose grip and the guts I pull off get gulped in a second while all kinds of fish are waiting like opportunistic seagulls or bust few sea urching with the butt of my gun and back off few feet to let the feeding frenzy vibrations bring the big ones close to my range , my point is that in a school or pack of all kinds of fish around a bait ,fish don`t look at a line, they will bite before another one gets it first if they can sense food, but when the food looks weird in shape or color or they already took a little peck at it and don`t feel right they will just ignore it like if it was a piece of trash floating around... and human eyes are not as same as fish eyes just like dogs don`t see as we humans see ,,,for me I believe is 80% the bait and 20% the line , I think they can see more the hook than the line anyways... great discussion but I am staying with mono because fluorocarbon seems to be just a little more clear and shiny but does not means it attracts fish better, just my 2 cents.... Lets see a microscope comparison under a light spectrum since the manufactures won`t for a reason !.... fish will bite on a piece of banana if presented right .

I don’t mean to come off like I’m trying to argue but if you’re getting those results then I wonder why I’m not seeing any similar results from other people and from personal experience. I only fish inshore though so the water I fish isn’t too clear

@@Gio-nl7eg Ande, Triplefish, and Berkley trilene monofilament all work fine in cloudy dirty water, but if you can see 6 inches through the water so can the fish.
I only use mono on hooks, lures and plugs for better abrasion against teeth and rocks and mangrove roots. Night fishing you can get away with mono.On surface and twitch baits/lures I use fluorocarbon.

@@Gio-nl7eg Why do fly fisherman use tapered very very light line for fishing teeny tiny Flys 🪰
Cuz you want the lightest thinnest clearest line you can get away with.
      Only logical thing.
