For nothing. So, there are some serious dicks in the industry but also some really good people.
to me, a toxic, machoman "'studio" like that isn't even a studio. thats a tattoo parlour. A studio is about making art for everyone, not just huge, dark, cliche pieces for burley men. I'm so sorry you had that experience
I love the idea of parents getting behind their kids getting tattooed, my dad said he'd boot me to the street if I came home with a tattoo. I came home with a full bicep piece, he liked it. Back to the subject at hand. . . I just think 16 is a bit young for making permanent marking choices.
sure it's a little young, but it's a nice tattoo with great meaning behind it, she'll likely never ever regret it, that's just her case tho, I'm sure you're talking about 16 year olds in general, to which I agree. I'm 17, been wanting tattoos since I was about 12, here in Ireland there's no minimum age for getting a tattoo, but of course, artists can deny you if they themselves believe you're too young and they don't feel comfortable tattooing someone they deem too young. So I could have gotten a tattoo whenever, but I'm waiting until my 18th birthday before I dive into committing to tattoos.
@@Zoidd_Bergg In general, yes, I'm not sure most 16 year olds are mature enough to make life altering decisions like that. She had her mom and mom getting a related tattoo, that's different but yeah, in general I don't get behind the idea of people that young getting ink. But then, I started getting tattooed when it was still a taboo thing 'good' people didn't do. 🤣

About the person who tattooed themselves and gave a bunch of tips, my thought process is that its best to go to a professional, but if you decide you're not going to, the better option aside from going to a professional is to do things as safely as you can (because let's be honest, people are still going to tattoo themselves without professional help so others might as well provide tips on how to stay safe in doing so)
It fits into the larger harm reduction conversation. Do you provide tips on how to be more safe when doing something dangerous? For example, providing birth control and proper sex ed versus trying to discourage teens from having sex at all. Should you provide clean needles and narcan to addicts or does that encourage that behavior? I’m conflicted on the topic of tattoos. People will tattoo themselves anyways, so they should be safe. However, I really disliked that tiktok and it does seem like it encourages people to tattoo themselves. Idk.
@@bluesweatshirts7113 I'm a bit split too. Like I'm kinda a "ur body ur choice" person so I guess if someone unprofessional were to tattoo someone I'd rather it just be themselves than other people? But you're right about it falling under harm reduction but also how it still encourages people. Idk as well. But also I pierced my belly button when I was fifteen so not the best influence (do not do it it doesn't work, I'm extremely lucky I did not get an infection)
@@bluesweatshirts7113 Talking things as how they are makes them less interesting. Talking about safe sex and how things work makes many young teenager not to have it since it's not something seacret and banned. They don't have need to explore us much. Many thinks that making tattoo is mom's sewing needle + india ink. Maybe old sharpie to draw the desing. And since it seems so easy they think they can do it. When they learn that it's not that simple after all makes them think twice.
I plan on going to a professional for my main tattoos as they will be rather intricate, but I do just want a simple smily face on the top of my food. I won't go to a pro for that because I don't care if it looks bad (that's kind of the point). I have drawn a smile on my hand almost every school day for the past year and a half, and it's become an important thing for me. I want a permanent one, but I want to easily hide it and keep it for myself. Edit: maybe I'll put it on my hand? Idk. That is something for the far future anyway.
Felt like I had an itch I couldn't scratch when Lauren didn't say how bad that mother daughter tattoo actually was (and the fact the station wasn't wrapped!)
Me too!! Yes it was sweet but right there front and center and poorly done. But the minute I saw the outside with just “tattoo”...no name or anything I wasn’t expecting much.🤷🏻♀️
I prefer when videos are like, "what I'm doing is stupid, but this is how I'm doing it" because no matter how bad the idea is, people *will* do it, and I'd rather them be informed than wing it.
When I got my tattoo on my left inner forearm I went into work the next day and had my baggy work fleece on (I had second skin on) and after I helped an old woman out she thanked me then grabbed my freshly tattooed forearm in the process...never been so close to hitting such a sweet customer in my life 🤣🤣
I'm in the process of getting my entire calf/shin and front leg done. My last session was now 10 days ago, couldn't walk properly for all those days, ankle swollen 3x as big, could hardly get a sock on, much less a shoe. I work in a kitchen, working those hours were HELL ON EARTH! to make it worse.. I bumped into my bed and the tiniest touch was on my calf and I could've yeeted my entire bed out the fricking window that moment, hahah
everytime i get a new tattoo and need to peel off the sandierm i’m always saying “treacle wouldn’t want me to do this all dry, i’m better than that!!” and i go in the shower lol
i don’t really agree that making a disclaimer/giving tips to be safe with a diy tat is worse than just going in with no practice or precautions. so many artists started off that way and i think any time people encourage cleanliness is a win bc people are going to tat themselves anyway
True, i feel like hoping people will suddenly stop doing stupid things is a worse thing than things like harm reduction or making sure those who will do it regardless at least understand how to do it the safest way they can
The dude sleeping getting the neck tattoo could have passed out due to exhaustion! When i got a 6 hour half sleeve, by the end of it i was coming in and out of consciousness not because it didn't hurt, but because my body had gone through so much that even if it was stinging like hell i didn't have the energy to stay awake
I actually love the tiktok where the person said hey i’m not a professional and gave advice on how to do it safely. I love Lauren’s content but I feel I always disagree with her when it comes to at home tattoos (which is fine!) but I’m finally leaving this comment because I think it would be a good conversation starter if Lauren saw it! That specific tiktok is a WONDERFUL example of harm reduction principles! For context I am a harm reduction nurse lmao and this is a weird back door into how I think about things. Telling people not to do something has historically never worked because it’s just not how we are wired as humans (eg. abstinence, war on drugs, anti-abortion) even IF that thing is bad for us. Similar to how people consume drugs for different reasons, people also tattoo at home for different reasons and they will do it really no matter what - soooo the best we can do is harm reduction! Encourage safe supply, safe use, as well as how to look out for signs of infection etc. Principles of harm reduction can apply to a lot of different public health measures 😁
I agree with you so much. It's like when people oppose giving out clean needles to people who have drug addiction. It's hard to stop someone from doing whatever they're doing, but it's possible to at least help them not die of infection. Some people just can't seem to grasp that helping people not die in a way that you can does not equal condoning harmful behavior.
@@botneva it's because honestly deep down they think those people should be punished for being addicts. They genuinely think if they get a disease or hurt by what they do it's just them getting what they deserve.
Big yes! other thoughts 1) she was doing a design that was intimate and perhaps doing it on herself was for intentional reasons 2) so many artists start out this way and a lot of it has everything to do with the gatekeeping of who gets to "officially" learn and who even has access to doing so financially. 3) tattooing has been around long before western centric ideals and standards. The safety and sanitation is important of course - (and shes encouraging it) but the rest is probably arbitrary "how it should be done" projections that are exclusionary of a lot of ways tattooing is practiced.
I feel like that mother/daughter one is like one of those recipe sites where they tell you their life story before giving up how to make the cake. 🤔 Also, that noise you made with the cherry pumpkins! 😂 Looking amazing as always, Lauren! I hope you're feeling better now! 😊
Bahahahaha!!! Agreed! My daughters turning 17 and I’m heavily tattooed so of course first thing she wants to do when she turns 18 is mom/daughter tattoo…I told her okay you pick the design and I get to pick the placement. Fair enuff..🤷♀️ she said “sunflower!” I said “okay full kneecap!” Story short 🤣
I gotta disagree with you on the person who tattooed themselves, they said not to do it, but is aware that people are gonna do it anyways and gave tips to make sure they have the best possible outcome regardless of whether or not the tattoo is good. Saying that giving tips is worse than those who just do it without disclaimers is a bit ridiculous too, at least that person was trynna make sure those non-professionals who make the dumb choice to tattoo themselves are at less of a risk of getting infected. While those who give no warning or pre-caution are like ''Haha, tattooed myself, it was pretty fun lol''. Just my two cents.
Love your vids. As an artist, the guy ranting about "Pinterest tattoos" pissed me off SO MUCH lol. Sure I could also diss "pinterest tattoos" because so much artwork gets stolen online for trends and the result can look like a budget ripoff...but as far as I could tell that was not his point. EVERY example he gave was hyper-realistic. He seems like the kind of dweeb who thinks realism is an inherently better art form - It's not. It takes a LOT of skill to nail realism, but also it takes a TON of skill to stylize things in such a way that is eye-pleasing and unique. Good stylized artwork requires knowledge of balance, interpretation, line widths and requires many many studies. They are just different art styles. Wanted to shove that man into a locker when he said something like "Go outside and see what real things look like!" I'm so sorry but I would sooner tattoo "kick me" on myself than get a realistic portrait tattooed. Sure, I admire the skill, but in my tastes it'd just be creepy having something "realistic" on my skin. I don't want to look in a mirror and see someone else looking at me LOL. A stylized image of an animal feels more classy and representational than a straight up photo-real duck. If I wanted to see a real duck, I can look at a photo or go to the farm - a stylized duck has the artist's unique interpretation and can suggest personality, movement, culture, and so many more things photo-realism can't. LOL rant over but it's such a narrow-minded and boring way of looking at art I could not stand being in a room with that guy he'd make me SO mad oh my god I'm imagining him saying something like "Van Gogh was a terrible artist because his work wasn't realistic enough" 😂😭 Also have to agree with others about the person giving advice for tattooing at home. I super, super agree that no one should tattoo at home, and in some ways I could see how describing how to do it sets a bad example. But I feel like a lot of people who have it set in their mind would do it anyway even if told not to, especially if they are attracted to tattooing to rebel, are going through hard times and impulsion as a result, they "don't care" if they hurt themselves, etc - telling them ways to make it safer could potentially prevent huge damage. Similar to how abstinence-only sex and drug education doesn't statistically help; but telling people the facts about safety greatly lowers the numbers of teen pregnancies and drug-related deaths. If someone is going to tattoo themselves anyway, I would much much rather they be as safe as possible.
I remember reading once that tongue piercings can cause a higher risk of heart disease because of the bacteria having direct access to the blood stream….I can’t imagine the risk of an at home tongue tattoo.
As a person who has been visiting the dentist a lot more recently because I'm preparing for bracers, there's no way in hell I'll get oral piercings or even a lip piercing for the fact that they mess your teeth and gums up. I must also add, just because it worked out for you means it will for everyone, that's for those with snake eye tongue piercings. 🤣
My mom and I both got our first tattoos together! We both have a Stitch (Disney) tattoo, it was our favourite cartoon to watch when I was a kid so it's very special to us haha
From experience, make sure to have good sleep the day before, hydrate really well for an entire week the day before, have a good protein filled breakfast and bring sugar with you, like little candies soda etc.
These regular videos of people being stupid tattooing themselves in unsanitary conditions at this point is like my regular ego boost. Sometimes when I'm like down on myself and I see the notification after I watch I feel so much better about myself😂😂.
as irritatingly long as that mother/daughter video was, i loved that they got matching tattoos! my first (sorta) tattoo was matching with my mom and i love it so much💕
I usually don't see my friends until they're healed because adult schedules lol. I did have a friend who is not tattooed and has not interacted with tattoo culture AT ALL ask to touch a new one that was healed because she wanted to know if the skin texture felt different. The girl who tattooed her face gives me goosebumps. They looked so bad and the placement was just weird and all over the place, or should I say face? I
Of course I don’t wanna judge people with face tattoos in general (!) but I could imagine that she might have something like a body dysphoria and that tattooing herself is not only for aesthetics but a coping strategy. Of course I don’t know her, just thinking about it because I have a friend who’s face is FULL of tattoos and I know that he does it because he hates his face
Yes!!! Fresh tattoos and also bruises and sunburns people love to touch for whatever reason 😂 also the mother daughter tattoo was sweet but she did look really young 😳 I always feel weird when really young people get a very visible tattoo no matter what it is
even as someone who likes minimalistic tattoos and those stylistically “bad” tattoos holy shit do not tattoo your own face, like even if you’re a tattoo artist, because if something goes wrong yikes
I’ve had my throat done, chests, ribs and back plus my full legs and I’ve fallen asleep with all of them and my tattoo artist loves it because she doesn’t feel bad bout hurting me in anyway
My mum took me, and paid for my first tattoo when I was eighteen; it was a traditional style red heart with a banner going through it that says, 'Mum'. We also have a matching little duck tattoo in honour of her mum (my grandma) who passed away. She used to love ducks and she collected duck figurines.
I got my first tattoo on my forearm and my boyfriend at the time asked to set it. Grabbed my arm and smacked it as hard as he could. It was covered with saniderm but lord I was seeing stars
i got like two 3,5cm butterflies on my forearm (my first tattoo ever) and my 2 friends also went with me and got themselves a 3cm cute cat and a 2 line lyric on their arms too and tbh our artist was really kind and i don't think any of us felt judge for getting little minimal tattoos, glad it was a nice first experience :)

I’ve watched At least a dozen of your videos overnight and they are very nice, and your overall positive spin on things is refreshing. I got my first tatt for my sweet 16 from parents in 1992 and still love it. I’m about 20-25% covered at age 45 with no regret.
my first tattoo.... omg... i was in the supermarket with my exes mum helping her getting everything she needed.... my tattoo had been 2 days old at this part and had covered a massive surface on my upper left arm. so at the counter she turned around and smacked my arm so hard, i was just standing there crying at that point because it hurt so bad.....
The fact that you're in a group that's whole purpose is to shame people for their ink is pretty fuckin shitty, ngl. I don't understand why people can't just go about their business and quit trying to shame people for their personal ink choices. Every tattoo doesn't have to be some super original dark and brooding photo realistic line work. Sometimes people want shit you think is too common, minimalistic or stupid when it has much more meaning to them. You're not getting it on your skin, so why the fuck do you care? It's none of your business. It's just petty and childish to sit and judge people on their ink like that, no matter how dumb you think it is.

About Dads signature, I mean the kids already look at professional tattoo artists and go: "yeah I could do this on my gross bed with a sewing needle" so her at least going out and saying: "if you're going to do this at least fucking be sanitary" so i don't think she's doing real harm compared to the idiots who don't explain the process. I promised my daughter that I’ll take her to get her first tattoo and pay for it, but she has to let me pick the artist and she must wait until she’s 18.
Actually the Twilight novels have a very real and harmful impact: specifically on the Quileute Tribe of La Push. The novels very much mangled their sacred history and stories, which are incredibly important to them and their identities, but it also, against their wills, made their home a tourist trap. This hasn't lead to increased revenue, but rather trashed land, fetishism to their faces, and other disgusting behavior by people obsessed with Twilight and forgetting the Quileute are Real People. I get you're British and far away, but it's important to realize that words on a page have a profound impact on real people. Bella and Edward may be ultimately harmless, but the real world impact Stephanie Meyer had on a marginalized, poor community is in no way something we can brush off.
people aren't gonna magically stop tattooing themselves but it's good that the person who wrote their fathers signature is atleast telling and showing how to do it as safe as possible
The Twilight thing is more than memes- it’s a “Twilight Renaissance”, many people very serious about it. They just had a reenactment of the wedding in Forks.
Oh god, I work at a pet store and when my latest tattoo (hand-sized, on my thigh above the knee) was fresh, an adorable boxer puppy jumped up as I was walking past it and its paw WITH NAILS landed squarely on my tattoo 😫 Omg the pain, but also the panic that my tattoo might be ruined! I literally yelped and ran away 😂 Tattoo is fine 😉
It’s so crazy to me how different people react differently to being tattooed. Last month i got my first tattoo (big upper chest piece including shoulders, collarbones). We tattooed 6 hours the first day and 5 hours the second day. And honestly, i did not feel the collarbones AT ALL. However the only little leave going on the upper back killleeeed me so bad. And let’s not even talk in between the breasts 😂 But yeah i do wonder whether i am the only one not feeling being tattooed on the collarbones at all (had lines and blackwork on them)
that interests me so much i have one high on my ribs and fell asleep then on the other side on my hips, waist and ribs i have a large tat and again fell asleep but my thigh i cried like a literally baby i was sobbing. ..my ribs i actually enjoyed the feeling but not my thigh it was hell
Agreed. So many people told me the sternum and ribs was the worst. Well I have a sternum tattoo that goes onto my ribs and down all the way to my belly button. No pain on the sternum, a little pain on the ribs, but the stomach. Omg I felt like she was using a razor blade.
When I get a new tattoo, it's a religious experience. Some piercings I get is the same feeling just not as long. I always have a good meal the night before and a few hours before. I could easily fall asleep while getting tattooed but I always have a good time talking with my tattoo artist. My chest, the area behind my ears, back of the neck, and the tattoos on my wrists didn't bother me much at all.
Same. I literally come into the studio so prepared and I enjoy the ritual of cleaning whilst it heals. And then there's my friend who insists on TWISTING her new piercings and won't stop fiddling with them 😤
Yo Treacle, i love having your stuff on while looking for tattoo ideas. Lots of what to/not to do and I LVOE IT!!! Especicially your take as you got a number of tats so I trust ya kinda
ngl, "she gave me life" could potentially feel a little like the mom branding her daughter. no idea what the relationship is like, so i could be WAAAYYY off base with this, but if the mom happens to be a raging narcissist, it takes on a slightly different vibe. maybe i just spend too much time in reddit, but something about the phrasing of each tattoo seems to place all the focus on the mom. i really like the scribbly heart and the script and everything. it just doesn't quite read like like something a 16 year old kid chose to put on her collarbone as her first tattoo. makes me a little nervous.
That mother and daughter tattoo feels like the mother is depressed and puts a heavy burden on her daughter My friend life was warped by her mother letting her know that she was what kept her alive. It's not cute. It's terrifying.
I paid for both of my daughter’s very first tattoos. My then 17 yo designed a flower with my name and her sister’s name above & below it. My then 16 yo got an infinity symbol with her great grandparents names in it for a memorial tattoo. I have always stressed the importance of making educated decisions when it comes to tattoos.
the thing about self tattooing (particularly about the video at 12:50) is that teens and young adults will do it whether they have these tips or not. This person is giving tips, not because they recommend doing self tattoos, but because they know people will do self tattoos no matter what and would rather spread helpful safety and care information instead of just outright being like 'dont do it, blah blah blah'.
I showed my boyfriend (who has no tattoos) my outer thigh piece a few days after it was done and he touched it. Had to explain that it stays sore for a while 😂
I complained to my boyfriend about my itchy spine tattoo and out of habit he went "oh wait let me scratch it for you" and I have NEVER jumped away from someone so fast, he knows not to touch my fresh tattoos but that was just to much of a habit for him😅
I’ve always been told cold compresses can help with any itchiness. Normal/logic cold compress rules of course (like never put a gel pack directly on skin, etc) but worth a shot
I'm almost 29 and have done all but 2 of my tattoos myself because of fear of people with needles around me that I've only overcome recently, but from here on out I will only be getting my tattoos done by professionals

I hate it when old people grab you, and not in a "I need help so I don't fall" type of way but just "I want to touch you" kind of way
Made me laugh when the disclaimer girl wiped her nose after saying to be 'sanitary as fuck'
I don’t want realism, I want snek
Did you ever get your snek?
bloke at 14:05 really hates everyone that doesn't have hideous, heavy, realistic blackwork lmao. I hope he gets a grip
everytime i get a new tattoo and need to peel off the sandierm i’m always saying “treacle wouldn’t want me to do this all dry, i’m better than that!!” and i go in the shower lol
i don’t really agree that making a disclaimer/giving tips to be safe with a diy tat is worse than just going in with no practice or precautions. so many artists started off that way and i think any time people encourage cleanliness is a win bc people are going to tat themselves anyway
@@botneva Exactly!!
@@Kaelani-f4u YES! There are a million reasons why someone would want to tattoo at home, making it safe is really the least that can be done

Also, that noise you made with the cherry pumpkins! 😂

LOL rant over but it's such a narrow-minded and boring way of looking at art I could not stand being in a room with that guy he'd make me SO mad oh my god I'm imagining him saying something like "Van Gogh was a terrible artist because his work wasn't realistic enough" 😂😭
Also have to agree with others about the person giving advice for tattooing at home.
A guy I know pierced his own tongue recently. I’m praying for him (metaphorically).
You can die if it isn't placed right. It can pierce an important blood vessel.
What if some people want to die young huh?
As a person who has been visiting the dentist a lot more recently because I'm preparing for bracers, there's no way in hell I'll get oral piercings or even a lip piercing for the fact that they mess your teeth and gums up. I must also add, just because it worked out for you means it will for everyone, that's for those with snake eye tongue piercings. 🤣

I LOVE the BWTHHYBL tattoo. I think it's HILARIOUS. It got posted to an inkshaming group I am in, and I strongly disagree. It's hysterical.

They just had a reenactment of the wedding in Forks.

the thing about self tattooing (particularly about the video at 12:50) is that teens and young adults will do it whether they have these tips or not. This person is giving tips, not because they recommend doing self tattoos, but because they know people will do self tattoos no matter what and would rather spread helpful safety and care information instead of just outright being like 'dont do it, blah blah blah'.

When it comes to at-home tattooing and that person giving the disclaimer about doing so, I kind of think of folks giving that sort of advice as a form of harm reduction. In other words, I see that as someone saying like "ideally you would not be doing this at all -- but I know that if you want to do it, you're going to do it, so at least here's how to do it as safely as possible", which I can sort of get behind.
