Honestly I wish they still made antique designs like this, I mean they do, but they are usually custom made and so expensive as big companies always do the most efficient things because people like to be efficient. But the quarter inserting, the interlocking parts, the turning of the lever, it just gives you.. that feeling of this huge, amazing thing
My dad bought my mom one of these from an old pub in Ireland and had it shipped to the states for their "wood anniversary". It's still one of the coolest things that people always ask to hear. We also have 10 different discs all original, but honestly I love this one Irish tune that ours has and we haven't changed it in years XD
That is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes. My family had a similar music box that was an anniversary gift to my grandmother from my grandfather, but it was stolen from us in the late 80s when I was a small child. We've been heartbroken ever since. Thank you for sharing. I can't get enough of that glorious sound.
Nothing sounds like these beautiful machines they have a sound all their own. Stephen thank you sir for showing is this beautiful Victorian musical instrument.
@@lolpop2118 I suppose it’s good and bad, then. Good in the way that we’re not forced to use such clunky and expensive machinery just to listen to a handful of music. Bad because it’s now a dead medium to listen to music.

What ab out the wooden cob roller organs which went around three times as the spiral gear on the right moved those tiny pins over just enough that when the cob came back around, the pins then continued the song and the third time until the end when a lever pushed it away and into the beginning mode.,! BTW, the pins would pull down on each metal note assignment which pulled the felt away from the base where the reed behind it was making it sound from the bellows. Amazing!!!!
Now, somebody is gonna think I’m silly or I don’t know the classics, but… “A chocolate this, a chocolate that, a chocolate bliss, a chocolate SNAAAACK!” 😄🎵
I realy wish this guy and his family since they first got the machine looked after it like it would out live them. Just look at the way he slides them over each other. This is the second time iv seen one of these. It was easy to work out how the sounds are being made and knowing that sliding them over each other. No wonder there are so many broken notes and its sad because the level of detail in this one its like hearing an orchestra from an ancient music box. These were shorely made by hand. My trady heart cries for workmanship on this level to be unkowing defaced. Its magic to see it still run but some care should be taken. The manufacturer did not design those original draws to protect them just as convenient storage. You should ad foam and spacers. And those discs need to be repaired while its still possible. Have the peg like parts under the disc straightened out again. Hopefully its not so hardened they just snap off. Better to not hear the note tho then it sound so bad.
Have a look at this www.antique-musicboxes.co.uk/pages/shop/product.html?product_id=218374503&
Imagine how much skill went into making these disks by hand. The timing would be so freakin difficult as the diameter changes for each note.
I know right! I cant imagine the patience and concentration that might have come into this!
Well cocaine was legal back then so that probably made it a lot easier.

To be fair even back in the day these types of things were very expensive and usually only purchased by the more wealthy people.
Good things don't come in cheap price don't you know that?
