As a classical musician, if I was rich I would love to have one of these in my living room. I do not have the ability of site, but based on the way this sounds online I can hardly imagine how it would sound up close. I have always had a liking for mechanical things like music boxes and clocks, but never have I heard something so melodious in my lifetime.
You are entirely correct. Cylinder music boxes were first around 1800 and then disc based music boxes were invented in the later 1800s which allowed new songs to be played on a music box machine - similar to a vinyl record. Mechanical music machines using paper sheets or wooden cobs were also available (player pianos, roller organs, etc.). Then gramophones came along and finally record players that played 78 rpm records. Kind regards, Troy Duncan.
This nearly made me return to a previous life in the country when nothing much happened and these magical boxes were gateways to fantastic worlds of imagination. Times when you really stop and let music take you to places.

Beautiful piece of machinery. When I was young, one of my great aunts left a Regina music box with us for several year, with a number of the metal "records". Unique sounding music, and mesmerizing to watch.
The box itself has been beautifully restored. I would really like to see the marquetry shown a bit closer so I could fully appreciate the craftsmanship that went into achieving this beautiful detail. I loved how beautiful the music sounded as it played ! Thanks for this wonderful video.
I’ll admit there are some small ones today that actually sound quite beautiful to me. One might probably say I’ve collected music boxes since before I could even say “music box”! In other words, I’ve pretty much owned alt least one since I was born. First it was this yellow puppy with blue ears that sat in a doghouse, as well as a miniature grandfather clock and my musical mobile that featured “flying” plush clown dolls in little hanging hoops. However, my first ever “serious” or fancy music box was given to me right about when I was a schoolboy at 7 years old or so. It was a small light brown jewelry box with a dark red velvety interior that you could insert your own pictures into. We chose to put in a photo of me sitting on my bed surrounded by my stuffed toys, and that childhood photo is still framed in it to this day. Shortly after that one, I started collecting musical snowglobes and glitter globes along with some porcelain or ceramic things with music boxes inside. I think I’ll just list some of my most favorite ones I’ve had here: A snowman that opens up to reveal a scene of ice skaters (plays Frosty the Snowman) A nutcracker automaton with a drum (plays The Little Drummer Boy) Santa with a ton of toys in his sleigh which has 2 beautiful reindeer hitched to the front (plays Here Comes Santa Claus, although the musical movement is kind of worn out so some notes don’t resonate like they should.) A dark brown box with a glass lid. When you open it there’s a tiny little winter scene with a train that turns. (plays We Wish You a Merry Christmas) Yet another one with a train- this one’s a red box designed to look like a matchbox. (plays Jingle Bells). This one is part of a series called Matchbox Melodies, hence the matchbox-like design. And those are just some of the Christmas ones I have. There are many more!

Music boxes always make me so giddy, I'm going to a new school next year and my brother had to do a project where he made a music box once. I aspire to be at your level someday!
Is the cylinder slightly shifting to the right or left to play different songs? I don't notice movement until the end when it seems to 'reset' its position. I think that is how it works.. wow imagine doing the cylinders...crafting them that is.
Both. The cylinder moves ever so slightly (less than 1 mm) to the right allowing a different set of cylinder pins to strike the comb. After all of the pins have been played, the cylinder snaps back to the left allowing the first set of pins to play once again. This is how all cylinder music boxes work - some antique examples play 12 or 16 songs. Antique music boxes were crafted entirely by hand and each pin was manually placed. Today, CNC machines are used so the process is much less manually intensive. Kind regards, Troy Duncan.
I noticed the same thing, and my conclusion is that the three songs are lined up after each other in a spiral way. So, while playing, the cylinder gradually shifts, not in steps, but continuously, and then at the end it snaps back into the initial position again. So between the "metal notes" (that vibrate) there is a distance which will fit three spiraling turns. It seems to be not so much space as that, but if you would look at the tip of each vibrating metal piece, you would see that it is pointed, so between the pointed ends of two adjacent metal pieces, there is this full distance of three spiraling turns. It is a bit difficult to explain this for me, partly because English is not my native language.
You are so lucky to be able to afford this music box! It's not only a beautiful sounding box but a beautiful piece of "furniture"! Thanks for sharing your music with us.
An amazing instrument made even more so when you think about what it took to make it. Many men and women with a shared vision over centuries to create the requisite skills, tools, mechanisms and music. All of this interspersed with peace, freedom and prosperity to allow the creativity that can not be found in times of desperation, war and famine. Amazing and beautiful.
it's incredible that music was only played through this kind of thing for years and years! even when records were invented, it was just essentially a very advanced version of music boxes! also, hard to believe that every human on earth could die and electricity could shut down completely and these kinds of things would still work perfectly! it's amazing to think about.
I'm trying to make a small, simple music box for a school project. I'm a little lost, can you please do a video on how someone can make their own music box? I would absolutely love that. Thank you :)
Thank you so much for sharing this work of heART! My father bought my mother one years ago; 1 cylinder, plays 2 songs. I hope to enjoy it long after they both pass & fondly remember their love! Oh! How he cherished her! ❤😍💞
You will probably not see this model for free as it sells for $10,000 brand new. YOu have most likely seen the "trinket music boxes" that are common at rummage sales.
Wow! what a beautiful music box. Just as beautiful as the larger one which has 2 key combs. A longer and larger sized cylinder, that plays 4 songs on each cylinder, and all the start, stop, repeat switches are the same as this one. It's simply a beautiful box like this one here, but larger.
Benson Gobel THE 4 72 note music boxes tend to go for the thousands of dollars. I’ve seen prices ranging from 3,000 to 7,500. I also want to start a collection, so I should probably start saving now because they’re not getting any cheaper 😂
@@anukay7854 You can get some antique Swiss cylinder boxes from the 19th century for less than that, even in fairly nice playing condition, depending upon how fancy or rare of a box you get (what type it is). I am not putting down Reuge since they make high quality instruments indeed, but a lot of these old boxes need good homes and it sounds like you're on a budget. So for me that would be the way to go. You can save up for a new Reuge afterwards ;)

I have a similar one to this with the same movement. Mine is the La Dolci Vita made by Reuge with a beautiful burr walnut cabinet. I bought it when I retired over twenty years ago and I play it regularly. It's a joy to listen to and hopefully my family will continue to enjoy it when I'm gone.
I have a little music box on my bedside table, it’s one that you have to actively wind and I love looking at and understanding how the mechanisms work, but a box on this scale and of this quality, I can just imagine how amazing it would be! I bet you feel quite proud to possess a music box this beautiful!
I bet the kids who watched that play the songs understood how sound and different notes were formed better than kids who just heard music through a speaker and that it's just magic how sound comes out of it.
How beautiful this instrument is, I have had the pleasure of seeing many of these wonderful things here in Australia all original Swiss and German models including Reginas ,Polyphons Automatic changers and Reproducing Pianos when I was involved with collectors of mechanical music but I've since retired however many many thanks for the wonderful video. Jim from Australia.
After watching this video I decided to look up music boxes from this company Reuge. And 19k to 21k is actually not far off. They have a fancy box similiar to this one going for just under 7k. But it is not nearly as complex. There must be a small but dedicated collectors market for these things.
I hope one day i will ever have one of these amazing music boxes to enjoy. Absolutely magnificent piece of sheer beauty from a time when music was tuned correctly to 432 Hz.
That is just precious. This must have been very expensive in its time. Probably a pretty penny nowadays, but back then it was something for rich folks to amuse themselves.
Thank you for the kind message and yes, I sell a lot of music boxes and automatons. You should visit my website: www.singingbirdbox.com. Kind regards, Troy Duncan
would it be possible to manufacture custom cylinders for it with the newest technology like cnc or 3d metal printing? I mean custom songs or if some of the original get damaged. wonderful piece BTW!! when was it made?
Reuge continues to craft music boxes and today they would use CNC machines; the antique music boxes were all musically arranged and crafted by hand - pretty amazing when you think about it. This piece is not that old - maybe 1970s or so.
@@therealsourc3 Today, they use CNC machines. Prior to computers, they would have made a jig crafted by hand. Going way back, each pin was arranged entirely by hand.
Ah! Wonderful melodies! Pleasant and enjoyable! Some antique wall clocks and bracket clocks played tune on built in music-box mechanisms like this just before or soon after striking the hours on small cup shaped bell or thick and hard coiled wire chime (gong). Nowadays these types of music-boxes and chiming clocks are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks because they contains circuit board of electronically recorded and programmed sound chips connected to speaker. But they can't beat the real chimes and music-boxes like this.
That's amazing. How do pins from the first song not interfere with the notes of the second song? Especially since the drum is shifting? Wow, my brain just fell out.
How a cylinder music box works is the cylinder pins are arranged in such a manner where each musical arrangement (song) only strikes the comb teeth when a specific song is playing. What is truly amazing are the antique music boxes (I have many videos of such). That is because a master arranger would need to arrange the thousands of cylinder pins perfectly on the cylinder to create the song and also be spaced perfectly. Today, CNC machines are used so the human element is largely absent.

I'm 14, and I don't mind Fnaf at all. Yeah sure some of the fandom is bad. But just can't we enjoy this. Heck, I'm pretty sure kids listening to modern rap or something is more of a bad thing than fnaf
You don't even need to win the lottery to collect music boxes. If you are middle class you can still build a nice collection of a half dozen or a dozen boxes at several hundred bucks each. The market is way down at the moment which is sad for folks trying to use these musical instruments as investment items BUT which is great for beginning collectors who might have found it hard to afford more than one or two nice music boxes at the height of the market (like in the mid 1990s when the prices were stratospheric).
The antique clock market is in a similar state and the antique (player) piano, reed organ, pipe organ markets are worse (however orchestrions and fairground organs etc seem to have maintained a good amount of monetary value, as have the fancier and rarer musical boxes). So for folks genuinely interested in these instruments who want to have one or more for pure enjoyment at home, it's a real buyer's market and now's the time to get one to enjoy (while they are still extant to get).
Not a professional but I've messed with music boxes before, and I'm pretty sure those screws have something to do with the tuning of the comb. You wouldn't tell a guitarist to line up their tuners, would you? Same thing here.

I'm more amazed on how it can play three songs on a single cylinder when it doesn't even change it!
That first cylinder has 3 epic songs back to back, would love to hear the others. That first song is my all time fav
This is Synthesia but ancient.
I cannot stop watching these videos! I have always been obsessed with music boxes, and these just take my breath away!!
5:32 whats the name of this song?
I like how you can see which notes are being played by the flash of light on the tines as it's lifted by their respective pins.
This is amazing.
I think someone should put a small music box in a time capsule. How wonderful would it be to hear this in 1000 or even 3000 years from now. :)

How beautiful this instrument is, I have had the pleasure of seeing many of these wonderful things here in Australia all original Swiss and German models including Reginas ,Polyphons Automatic changers and Reproducing Pianos when I was involved with collectors of mechanical music but I've since retired however many many thanks for the wonderful video. how do they produce those cylinders? those pins are so incredibly intricate

Singing bird boxes ok, will do! Keep up the good work! Merry Christmas!
is so intricate and fancy, i love it
Truly amazing what humans are capable of creating
this music box is high price Maybe between 19.000 until 21.000 dollar
wow maybe i will buy it in future
Noi9er $19 to $21 isn't that bad or do you mean $19,000 to $21,000. Please learn how numbers and the English language work.
The Bread Man was this comment necessary?
homogentisinsaeure was yours or mine or ours as a collective? I SAY YES 👍!
In Europe they use ',' as the decimal point and '.' as the thousands separator. It's not what we in the USA expect to see, but it is not "wrong".
Amazing... So small but damn... Impressiv! The Maintenance must be the horror... Thanks for this video ;D
That is just precious. This must have been very expensive in its time. Probably a pretty penny nowadays, but back then it was something for rich folks to amuse themselves.
Music boxes were the only way to have music in your home back then.
Excuse me do you sell these wonderful music boxes?
Thank you for the kind message and yes, I sell a lot of music boxes and automatons. You should visit my website: www.singingbirdbox.com.

Singing bird boxes Amazingly!
Singing bird boxes could you remind me the name of the third song?

would it be possible to manufacture custom cylinders for it with the newest technology like cnc or 3d metal printing? I mean custom songs or if some of the original get damaged. wonderful piece BTW!! when was it made?
Reuge continues to craft music boxes and today they would use CNC machines; the antique music boxes were all musically arranged and crafted by hand - pretty amazing when you think about it. This piece is not that old - maybe 1970s or so.
@@troyduncan1969 but how do they attach the small pins to the cylinder with surgical precision?
@@therealsourc3 Today, they use CNC machines. Prior to computers, they would have made a jig crafted by hand. Going way back, each pin was arranged entirely by hand.
@@troyduncan1969 Man, that's dedication! I get nervous by the thought of hand assemble those small pins to the wheel..
this has a different and more muted sound than a lot of large nice music boxes, the lows sound like strings. Fantastic design
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. How old is the design for this specific music box?
475 BC but if you believe that Alticatus is the original inventor the it would be 385 BC
This is probably a late 20th century music box

If I won the lottery, I would not collect cars or jewelry, I would collect music boxes and dolls, dress in vintage clothing and pretend to be a ghost.
no you wouldnt
Love it! Always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn and then always be a unicorn :)
That's childish
I bought one like this for my best friend and for my mom, they loved it!
you really need to make those 6 silver bolts evenly turned using some washers or something. they made the box look cheap
You aren't a very wise person
Not a professional but I've messed with music boxes before, and I'm pretty sure those screws have something to do with the tuning of the comb.
You wouldn't tell a guitarist to line up their tuners, would you? Same thing here.
Oh, how wonderful! Thank you for demonstrating!
You are welcome.
