One thing i forgot to mention in the video. we actually used a machine at Today Ticket's corner to buy the Narita Express ticket for the next morning, and it worked. no problem at all. so it's confusing but it seems that the Today Ticket's machines also sell tickets for other days too!

Just a question, do you have grab or Uber there aside from taxi? Do you think hiring a car for 2 weeks is cheaper than catching train or keep using taxi like for example from one city to another? I haven’t seen any blog where tourists are catching taxi as their means of transportation, is that really expensive?thank you..
The system with the ticket reservation machines works quite well! There are some issues when you change your mind and decide to take an earlier or later train. When you want to make a new reservation for the journey between the same stations, the systems knows you've already booked a seat on that segment and it doesn't let you book a train. You must go to the staffed ticket counter to change your reservation.
I had this issue twice when I was there in April and June so I went to a small JR station early in the morning to deal with it. (I even tried to rebook a much later train that was not an overlapping train but the machine still did not let me, very frustrating.)
I don't understand it. They have one of the most efficient train networks in the world, and yet so behind when it comes to the booking system.Why is there no online booking system? Why do we need to get a physical ticket? Why can't we get QR codes instead? Why does my JR pass need to be a physical paper (and risk losing it)?
It seems like some parts of their society is futuristic and efficient, then other parts are stuck in the 1990s.

Thank you so much for this information. Just returned from Japan. Wanted to mention that if you have the JR Pass and go to the JR ticket office to get your ticket you also must have your passport(s). If you are getting tickets for others in your group make sure they do not wander away without giving you their passports. The lines were very long so getting your tickets from the ticket machines is the way to go.

@@ONEGOODDREAM I was going to ask, if it’s not too much trouble; I have a 5 year old, I know he can travel free on the rail system but I can’t reserve a seat on Shinkansen for him as he won’t have a pass, I know I can buy a separate ‘child’ ticket, but I plan on travelling enough that the separate Shinkansen tickets would cost more that a child JR Pass. My question is, can I buy him a JR pass even though he’s only 5, to use for Shinkansen reservations only? Or is that not allowed? Thanks so much
@@epsilona7472 unfortunately that it not possible. if you want him to sit on a separate seat with you, you can use the non-reserved seats, instead of the reserved ones, (it's first come first serve) or you can buy a separate kid ticket for half the price of adult's one.

Thank you so much!🙏 I'm not sure what you mean by "a clip", but as long as the pass period is still valid, your jr pass still works. if there's any issue, just use the manned gate and show the pass to the staff there.

It was very helpful since I've watched many videos and most didn't specify the main task of using the gate.
There are some other videos that also indicate to use both the ticket and rail pass, or just the printed ticket. So to get through the gate for Shinkansen after making reservation, you insert just the JR Pass?
I don't want to draw attention to myself or the fact that I'm using a pass specifically for tourists. The least amount of human interaction the better😅
Hi, thank you so much! 🙏 yeah, you insert just the JR Pass at the ticket gates to get through (cuz the pass is a ticket itself) and the tickets printed out at the machines that have the seat number, those are only for you to know where you can sit on the train. that's why if you use a non-reserved seat on a Shinkansen, you don't need any extra ticket, just insert the JR pass at the gate, get on the Shinkansen, and sit in one of the non-reserved cars :)

yes, according to JR, you can buy the jr pass in Japan after you arrive. here are the locations where you can buy it: japanrailpass.net/en/exchange.html
I exchanged my exchange order at a reservation office but the agent keyed my passport number incorrectly into the pass. Because I didn't know what the wrong passport number was, I couldn't make reservations at the ticket machines and had to go to the reservation counter each time and face extremely long queues 😡
So please make sure that you are able to make reservations at the ticket machines immediately after you get the pass at the counter to ensure that your passport number has been recorded properly.

yes, with the jr pass, you can just get on the bullet trains (that are covered by the jr pass) without booking, if you use a non-reserved seat. the booking is only needed when you want to secure a reserved seat. hope this helps..

Hi, Can we use JR pass to reserve a seat in shinkansen trains on the same day when we want to travel or do we need to print out the tickets before ? If before then how many days before we can print ?
Hi, you can use the jr pass to reserve a shinkansen seat on the same day as well as before your departure day (you can print out 1 month before your departure day). Or, you can use the jr pass to get on a non-reserved car of a shinkansen without having to reserve a seat. of course it's best to reserve a seat as earlier as possible.
When to use jr pass and.when to use suica card or ic card. ? Got conflict with these too.much cards.

it does not depend on the shinkansen type though, it depends on whether you want to secure a seat or not. if you want to secure a seat, you need to reserve it.

sure thing! you can reserve a seat at any JR office throughout Japan anytime convenient for you. if by any chance you miss your Shinkansen, just hop on the next one and sit in the non-reserved seats. that's the benefit of the jr pass^^

glad you found it helpful! thank you so much! 🙏 you'll need to enter your passport number in full. (even though when you exchange for the jr pass, they match the last 4 digits of the pass to the last 4 digits of your passport).
My wife and I were there in April and June/July and I had to enter our passport #s, over and over (I had to print a lot of tickets.) which was very repetitive but I had already memorized our numbers.

Hi, thank you so much for watching!🙏 you won't have to key in yourself. there will be a list of trains by time so you can just select the one you prefer with just one tap on the screen. you'll also be able to select the seat number, like I demonstrated in the video.

I'm not sure about this. I think you need to check it with a JR ticket office.
No need to go first class. When you get back to Tokyo from Kyoto on the Hikari Shinkansen, reserve seats on the NEX to Narita, if your JR pass is still good.
Do i need a green pass to reserve seats or will ordinary jr rail pass allow me to reserve?

yes you only need to insert the jr pass at the ticket gate. other tickets are just FYI where to sit on the express trains or shinkansen.
