FFXIV 1.0-1.23b Story: A Retrospective

  • To clarify in light of our current understanding: No, Midgardsormr is absolutely not a primal. He is in fact an ancient space dragon; however the spectacle over Silvertear might easily have been mistaken for a primal by the witnesses and combatants. Secondly, the serpent that attacks the player en route to Limsa Lominsa is almost certainly not Leviathan but one of the ancient sea serpents upon which I have elsewhere posited that the Sahagins' image of Leviathan is probably inspired.
    The main story of FFXIV 1.0 right up to the calamity, as well as it can be presented in 30 minutes! I could not cover all the sidequests and filler dialogue here, but it should still give you a highly comprehensive understanding of the background leading into ARR. If you want me to clarify or expand on any part of the video, please comment below.
    If you're trying to talk friends into picking up ARR or Heavensward, point them here!
    Thanks to MithraTales for gameplay footage from 1.0.
    All footage and music is and remains the property of Square Enix and affiliates.

    Very rarely do writers get the opportunity to tell the classic tale of the heroes rising to countless challenges, chosen by a powerful good to unite the world against an oppressive threat, only for everything to fail and for the world to end apocalyptically during the crucial ultimate battle. You don't get the opportunity often to write the bad end and see it rendered in beautiful and terrifying detail, but FFXIV managed to put itself in a position that gave the writers the opportunity to do just that! Makes for some very rare and inspired storytelling.

    • @Ionsniper
      @Ionsniper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The writers were given free reign to do whatever they wanted with the story of 1.0 when it was decided they would rebuild it. There were only certain conditions that had to be met for the story like I think Dalamud falling and such. Otherwise it was a free for all for the writing team. That's how they were able to put out such an amazing story.

    As a player of ARR onward, it's crazy to think about a legend like the late Louisoux who once was alive in 1.0 but now you can only hear about them. Real life people who played 1.0 were there though. That's what makes Binding Coil so special.

    Just rewatched this and it's crazy how far back some of the story beats go. Like knowing the greater significance of the starshower in 1.0 after the same phenomenon repeats over the Crystarium on the First in Shadowbringers.

    • @justinlee790
      @justinlee790 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair, a _lot_ of newer lore was retroactively applied, rather than planned all along. By and large, most of Shadowbringers and Endwalker were only hashed out during Stormblood.

    • @anthonydelfino6171
      @anthonydelfino6171 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinlee790 The major story arc was, as I understand, proposed and approved when Yoshida took over for ARR. Though I'll concede it's not THAT surprising they'd use in-game story beats and build on them for later. But it does show that they're attentive to the story of their own product in a way other developers often aren't

    • @justinlee790
      @justinlee790 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@anthonydelfino6171 The story arc is what I'm referring to: Shadowbringers and Endwalker, and the lore revelations and major storybeats therein, were only really thought out during Stormblood's development cycle.
      Beforehand they'd established certain plot points that would stay hugely relevant (biggest being the reveal that the world was Sundered into 14 pieces in Heavensward's post-launch patch storyline), but until Stormblood they never really had a solid conception of where the overall story was supposed to go: especially the role of the Ascians, which prior to the planning out of ShB/EW were still hugely up in the air. I believe there were even plans to tie them into adapted Ivalice lore, since that's where their namesakes are from.
      Kind of a big giveaway is that a lot of what the Ascians say in ARR and even HW don't really... make that much sense retroactively. Especially Lahabrea's big speech about how there needs to be balance between Light and Darkness, and how Hydaelyn is killing the world and needs to be destroyed before the laws of nature unravel.
      Credit where credit is due, the FF14 writers are really good at looking back to previous content's characters and story threads and referencing them to enforce a strong feeling of continuity where the Player goes "Aha!", but ultimately they didn't actually have a complete plan from the beginning of ARR. Heavensward and Stormblood were pretty much self-contained stories, and it was only after Stormblood's MSQ where things went according to a broader story arc plan.
      That being said, they seem to be continuing to look further ahead. I believe yoshi p has said that they've created a rough outline for several years' worth of story in the aftermath of Endwalker.

    If I remember correctly, in 1.0, All your early meetings with the scions were in the echo. Every time one of them showed up, the background music changed and the npcs suddenly ignored me in favor of them. (I later found out this was the initial signs of you entering the echo). For example, in Limsa, you're mocked for your sea monster story, as none have been reported recently, implying Y'shtola arrived in Limsa earlier than you did.

      exactly, it's the only thing this video gets wrong. for example, in Gridania [HW 3.5 SPOILERS] when we first meet Yda, it is indeed Yda, before her death. But When we enter the pact of the twelve, it's Lyse who assumed her identity. [END OF SPOILERS] Many people also believe Y'shtola is in her early 20's but in reality she's as old as Thancred, 32. When we meet them for the first time, they're 17. Papalymo is 40 or something.

Then when I got to Mor Dhona I had no idea why the sky is weird or even who the heck Midgardsormr is... Except we fight him in a dungeon in ARR because of some prophecy. With Midgardsormr that's understandable, although with Louisoix most of what needed to be told was placed into the story of the Binding Coils of Bahamut. Takyawn Agrred, that fight with Baelsar looked amazing and I never knew that there was one before the fight in ARR which of course was relatively straightforward (but then again that time around we actually fight instead of watching the fight.) Plus 2.0s cutscene style seems more focused around retrospectives of the situation than any real action. I think the closest thing might have been somewhere in the Leviathan arc or in Before the Fall but even then some portions we eh and things were better in detailing the brevity of the situation rather than over-the-top OP fights. Oh well, at the very least 2.0 was a better improvement functionally, though when I see things like this I feel bad that I missed it cause at the very least the story and cuts were as enjoyable as watching a good movie.

    Always a good listen and certainly a helpful reminder even for those who were there at the time.
    I did notice a couple of things that caught my attention, though.
    You seem to imply that Midgardsormr is a Primal, but he isn't. He's a dragon king, but not a Primal (the same is also true about Nidhogg, though he wasn't mentioned in this video).
    The serpent that attacked the ship in the Limsa opening is also not Leviathan. Limsan lore/legend states that it is Thalaos but Anonymoose has a theory that pretty much any big serpent is called Thalaos, so it may not have been one and the same.
    I never did do the Limsa story, but if what I can understand is anything to go by, that serpent was to be found around Seal Rock (also known as Swallowtail Roam) and attacked/was provoked after something was stolen from there. Almost as if the serpent was guarding it which makes sense in accordance with Lominsan legend around Swallowtail Roam - Llymlaen created the serpent to create the sea but because he wouldn't stop and would drown the world, he was sealed in the rock (thus the name).
    This link contains a post from Fernehawles regarding both of the above.

      I assumed it was leviathan given that it was exactly the same model, but if you're right it must indeed have been Thalaos or Perykos. As for Midgardsormr, I think you'll find that whilst yes, he is not the primal of the dragons (that is Bahamut of course) but since that post he was also established as the first Elder Primal created by Thaliak and Nymeia to guard Silvertear, and also arguably the first Warrior of Light given that his own allegiance is ultimately to Hydaelyn. They were saying in 2012 that Midgardsormr and Nidhogg were neither primals of the dragons because of what they had in mind for Bahamut in the near future, but they have made revisions to and retroactively explained story events since that time, and Midgardsormr's background is one of those.

      ***** did the elemntal stop attacking? then it was pacified no matter how it was stopped.
      killing it is pacifying it.
      and clearly a starshower like that is a sign of something and certainly something before the new era. the fact that SE hasn't given an officaly explanation does not make it a mistake.

      old post but I did play the 1.0 limsa story.
      That sea creature was EXTREMELY hinted at being Levi, as it only ever appeared with the elezen ascian, his pirate crew serpent revers, who were drones of sahagin. You also see it fly out of the water and cast tidal wave. to the player away from the rever ships.
      sorry if i butchered names, very tired. lol

    This video and it’s commentary are superbly done! For me, the adventures in Gridania leading up to and then going to the waking sands for the first time were other worldly. As broken as some parts of the game were, the MSQ was a dream to walk through. The story telling, the writing, the music and cutscenes, phenomenally done. Thank you for this amazing video, cheers!

    First of all please allow me to thank you for this amazing composition of backstory and a job well done telling it in a way that didn't put me to sleep! It was actually pleasant listening! Having said that... I have been a player of Final Fantasy since it's birth on the NES and am very critical of it's progression. After 7 / 8 I lost a lot of interest and felt the game was losing sight of what Final Fantasy was at it's core. To this day I am still not very happy with the way the battle systems have changed into more of an action-style but who am I to judge in a world where people want more fast-paced thrills and less depth.
    Final Fantasy 14, however, has brought me back to this franchise. While the battle system obviously cannot be side-view RTAB it still manages to somehow hold true to how a battle should be in a Final Fantasy game. What really brings me back is the massive amount of nostalgia they managed to incorporate into the story. From the primals, to quirky bosses like Gilgamesh and Ultros and even Matoya herself from Final Fantasy 1. I find myself nearly in tears as my childhood comes surging back and to top it off... the music is absolutely breathtaking and fits perfectly into every scene.
    This is the perfect video to enthrall new blood and Final Fantasy enthusiasts alike to the game and I hope you keep up the good work! I'm not sure about you but my biggest wish is to one day get to go to a Distant Worlds concert and perhaps meet the legend himself, Nobou Uematsu! Once again thank you and may the Echo forever guide you!

    Started playing FF14 sometime around 2.3 or so (my old computer couldn't run the game, so upgrade allowed me to finally play!) I had heard they worked stuff from pre-ARR into the story and game-world, but I didn't realize how much. Just found out the other day how the servers went down with people at the battle, watching the moon, and then seeing the cutscene. I'm kind of amazed at how they took all those elements from the game they were effectively replacing and made them into a story and locations to establish the sense of a pre-existing world with its own history.
    Anyway, thanks for the recap. I'm gonna have to watch some of your other videos now. :)

      @UmatsuObossa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it was truly amazing what they managed to do with 1.0 and its transition into 2.0. In 1.0, the story was so well thought out and well executed, that to their day I believe that the MAJORITY of the story was planned from the beginning (Especially in the case of the fact that the foreshadowing of Dalamud via the star showers from the sky were events that happened in the very beginning of the game and were in the game long before it was decided that an overhaul was needed), and it was only reworked just enough to be used as a plot tool to explain the needed overhaul of the game. I loved that SE chose to continue to update the game and work on it, not only to get to 2.0, but to make the then-existing 1.0 experience to be as amazing as it could possibly have been (and it was amazing), when they could have taken the easy route and abandoned 1.0 entirely to focus all efforts into 2.0. It's really far from that they 'worked in' 1.0 into 2.0...but that literally 2.0 was a direct continuation of 1.0. There was a SMALL handful of things altered or unaccounted for, like the exact form and origin of the acians in 1.0 was much different, being them more like powerful, phantom-like voidsent and a physical manifestation of evil in 1.0, where as in 2.0 and on they are clearly otherworldly beings, but not quite voidsent, and far more intelligent and calculated than just manifestations of concentrated badness. The vast majority of the lore and story, however, remained completely intact...aside from the fact than 2.0 players could not have the privilege of playing out the main story themselves, and had to rely upon its retelling by NPCs.

    • @eivarden
      @eivarden 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You never see star showers in 1.0 present day, you only see them in echos.
      The star showers are representations of when people gained the Echo.
      But the story was tweeked, to make it related to Dalamud.

    12:35 This cutscene takes place in the form of an echo, afterwards returning back to Travenchet stealing the horn. As of patch 5.2, makes me wonder if this "starshower" was constructed by Travenchet the same way as Elidibus does on the First.
    Also find it strange that both Y'shtola and Sthalmann (now Rostnsthal) both had the same Echo flashback of the Starshower in 1.0, assuming this to be retconned.
