Written on 2 /2 / 2017. l have visited this very many times in the past two years since my first post and been reduced to tears on many occasions. There is a very great beauty in Sumi Jo's voice. The genius of Bellini is breathtaking. Written on 31/05/2018. Sumi Jo takes me into a magical world and also reveals her soul in this aria.
Sumi Jo is one of my go-to singers when I want to hear a flawless rendition of... anything, really. Her command over her voice is absolutely stunning and so is her sensibility; every nuance is already in her voice, she doesn't need to make it a spectacle. And she's one of very few people who can bring out the genius of Bellini.
What a good comment! The way that Sumi Jo uses her voice in a different manner in her performances over the years is a fascination. It is very sure to me that she is constantly working on technique and I admire that immensely.
Sumi Jo has many other qualities that enhance her work. These include wit and humour, a big personality, leadership combined wth humility, a sense of adventure; and much more. Sumi Jo is a delight.
Such a refined artist. She holds you and you need to know what happens next. A relatively new discovery for me, though I have loved her for years as the falcon on Solti’s Frau Ohne Schatten.
David Kae, Bellini was the consummate composer in the way the whole aria blends into a glorious work of art. His art songs from the book of fifteen show this, and are a showcase in miniature of the scope of his genius.
fagalon - I think that you're right - but only up to a point. See how she clapped him & encouraged the audience to do so. Also, despite his excellent playing, Sumi Jo is the diva - the greatest exponent of beautiful coloratura in our time. I'd rate her as top of the pops excelling in music & beauty and as such no one stands even next to her ....!!!!!
Very nice, but it is a little bad mannered to not put the pianist's name up there too, especially considering how wonderfully he played this entire concert.
