Thanks, Joe. By the way, what is the Chico Hamilton Quintet album, the first, featuring Buddy Collette, the second, in Hi-Fi, the third Chico Hamilton Quintet?
Thanks Joe. A selfish question, I’m puzzled as to why Stanley Turrentine’s Up At Minton’s hasn’t hit either the Classic or Tone Poet series. Wondering if there are problems with the source tapes?
Challenging? If a global group like UMG can‘t figure this out and be clear from day 1 of the announcement, all it does is to disappoint loyal customers outside the US. In that case I rather go to my local record dealer and snap two or three of next year’s releases if at all. January 2025 Q1/2025 will come very soon. Let’s hope for a fast resolution.
100% agree Huge support across Europe from loyal customers & shops. I’m based in UK and the BN uk store is terrible, never get any discounted releases like the US. And now getting shoved out the BN club 😂 And tbh I hate the idea of a subscription
If it's bad for europeans, imagine for us here in Brazil. paying at least 50% more for a Tone Poet than US and Europe. struggling to keep the pace with the price increase since 2019..
A bitter taste in my mouth. The subscription model is according to Blue Note a reward for loyal buyers of their LPs. As far as I am concerned it's a slap in the face to all loyal collectors and jazz lovers outside the US. Especially since the special editions, like Davis Cup, are not available outside the US at all. I understand very well that a subscription model is difficult to implement outside the US because of shipping costs, etc. Hopefully Don Was and Joe Harley will consider making the special pressings available elsewhere in the world, as a reward. That would be a very nice and warm gesture to all other loyal customers who love this beautiful music, as an art form and as historically very valuable documents.
Agreed. I can't commit to a subscription and hope the exclusives are not records I've been dying to get. Focus groups would have told them that exclusive records would piss some fans off
Great video! Very insightful and informative reference for anyone considering the Society subscription options, in addition to what to look forward to for the 2025 Tone Poets 🤘🏼🤘🏼
The Tone Poet 2025 line-up is very interesting, but I won't fall for Blue Note's FOMO marketing strategy. What's more, it's limited to US customers only. I'll only be buying Tone Poet that I've taken the time to stream first. And I'll still enjoy listening to Chris's videos. The pleasure of listening to music should always outweigh the desire to collect everything. And it's since I've been watching to Chris's videos that my taste in jazz records has been honed further.
I think I may go in for Q4 (with some other titles like Blue Serge). Q4 is a super-interesting mix of titles, all of them really stand out in different ways.
The only issue I have - is that they are locking these exclusives into the subscription - which is cool to reward the loyal customers/members - but - hopefully they will release those titles as non numbered editions for the rest of us - the whole point of the tone poet series was supposed to be availability - and - you would think with the recent news they would FINALLY repress Mr. Shing A Ling!

I have a pretty large collection of jazz records I purchased in the 70's and 80's. Back then I didn't know very much at all about who was who. So much of my collection is compilations of artists or labels. The last two years I have upped my game but have been limited quite a bit by budget. I have bought a few Tone Poets and love the quality of the product. I don't have any of the offerings in this new subscription by Blue Note. So this year I went all in and will buy all the Exclusive titles as well. It will limit how many other records I can buy but my collection will have improved immensely. I know some people might have a problem with this program and I hope they can find a solution.
Been looking and looking for Montara for years, its been so expensive and ridiculously hard to find. Its by far one of the most popular blue note releases at this point, everyone seems to want it and its driven me crazy how long its taken for a reissue. Its probably so popular due to the numerous hip hop samples used from it including Madlib's Shades of Blue.
I have the Duke Jordan on CD but I have never listened to the Sheila Jordan session. It’s records like this that make the Tone Poet series stand out. Very much looking forward to listening to it. Jamie 🏴
I've been collecting Blue Notes for over 40 years! I live in Canada and this doesn't get to include me. You'd think Blue Note would figure something out that would be inclusive to the many fans outside the US. I understand that the shipping and duty would suck...but at least give fans an option. Or, at least make the additional titles available in some way for the rest of us. As far as the year's releases...I have most but am very excited as there is a lot of great stuff here. I am especially excited for "Some Other Stuff " from Grachan Moncur III, and Jackie McLean's "Jacknife" which is fantastic and a chance to hear Lee Morgan and Charles Tolliver playing together on "Soft Blue". Thanks for the great video!
I was waiting for your video and take. I do not have many of these titles. By the time I decided to get into collecting predominately Jazz titles, Pricing had long left the station of affordability. I have been a completist of the Tone Poet series so far with the exception of the Ornette Coleman set. All that to say, I am in for the full year subscription.

could be, but i dont think a drop in sales is a reason for people who want to hear the music to not go and get it. Buying new releases as an investment vehicle hasn't been shown to be a wise move, so I try to focus on the personal value I'd get from any purchase
They're doing it this way because i think recently the tone poet series has been stalling out a bit. The records have been sitting on the shelves for to long and people just aren't buying them like they use to. I think the subscriber method gives the TP series a exclusivity right that it has been missing since its inception in 2019, see to the Music Matters Jazz series. All of the international buyers with scrape up all the remaining copies on Amazon and other online retailers that sell BN products. So, I think consumers will notice a lot less of these titles hanging around for extended periods of time.
@@bradlewin8 I’m not sure on that. I haven’t ordered it as I sort of already have 3/4 of the music since it makes up the B side of that Jazz Track miles release on Columbia from the late 50s
Nice list but I am going to pick and choose .. labels are now starting to take advantage of going direct.. Rhino, OJC now BN .. in a way it’s disconcerting but it’s business

**Quick edit add to say great video & thank you bud.👍🏻 *From their initial date(s), I have bought every BN TP except two & every BN CV title except 2. I've even bought two of the three BN Review boxes to date. *I don't like the subscriber marketing model & have experience (in sub models) going back to the 70s. *Curious who at Universal or BN performed the marketing analytics & determined the credibility of creating a new adjacent Tone Poet club program; interesting. *Did many notice in the club rules, there are no exchanges for BN pressing / shipping errors? Note, I've returned 3-4 out of 2,500+ purchases so I'm not concerned but there are lots of folks we know that return 10% - 20% of their buys..... *I'd enjoy a Joe H & Don W 10min candid video on their reasonings, plans, etc. *What are other's thoughts? Did their 3 BN Review box series titles over 6+ years give them the idea? *Again, am curious. Does the BN TP Society model even generate additional profit? How so? *This subscriber series has to be the start of a new paradigm shift this coming decade for BN? *Again, I'm not sure if I'll participate in level II - IV, probably not BECAUSE my hunch is this new BN prepaid subscriber model w/ two mandatory titles ea. month MAY FEED us new, less desired/popular BN genre titles we'd not buy otherwise?? I TRUST Joe Harley for sure (I also own ~85% of his [best in class] Music Matters series but.... HE has bosses & must answer to an ownership board. *Note, no disrespect. Maybe it's the locking in to six or twelve months to reap the true value of any club model that has me wasting everyone's time herein with my curiosity & Qs.
I wish someone would re-issue some of the CTI vinyl from the 50s-80s. Creed Taylor was one of the very best producers in jazz. Look up Creed Taylor list of all the great jazz artists that Creed Taylor produced: Ray Charles, Gil Evans, J.J. Look up his Wikipedia page for Creed Taylor.
What’s not being talked about are the taxes on the annual membership. My axes are $76.22 which brings the total to $819.74. There goes the savings per album. There’s really no advantage over buying the releases locally except for the Knick knacks of the subscription
Where i live im taxed whether i buy from a physical store, from Amazon, or from blue note’s website. Doesnt matter, the government is still taking their piece
Jacknife was released as a twofer by BN is the mid 70s. I am not sure you mentioned that. But the cover was hideous, so a quality reissue of this title is overdue.
It's unfortunate that the Blue Note Tone Poet series has decided to go to a subscription model for some of its output. Blue Note is and always has been a mainstream jazz imprint. This businessmodel excludes a part of the record buying public, not just geographically. The scheme is currently only available in the US. It alsocuts out brick and mortar record stores. It places financial constraints on some consumers and therefore reduces choice. To incentivise take up, Blue Note Tone Poet will be issuing "exclusive releases" and additional content for subscribers only, depriving jazz fans of some of the more hard to find and desirable Blue Note titles. This will only drive up prices on the secondary market, again to the detriment of fans of the music released on the Blue Note label. I wonder if the Classics series will be next?
I sympathize with international collectors but also know that international shipping is dicey/pricey for these subscription models (see VMP, but I've quit them after getting puni$hed for being a yearly subscriber). That said, I've already paid my $800, as I don't have original pressings of any of these and am not going to seek them out.
Very strong release schedule. Blue Serge, Complete Communion, Freedom Sound, and for me, Blues in Trinity are stand outs. Tubby Hayes appearance on the latter is a big draw.
Sorry but the whole thing with exclusive releases (now in this ..episode only for us customers ) is wrong, disturbing and unprofessional. Due to these pseudoelitistic movements towards "higher customers", methods and actions who have nothing to do with music loving not to mention fair sales, the industry is facing downfall concerning vinyl . And rightly. Too much overpricing, too much "blackmailing " to the customer, too much arrogance and greed. Come on.
As a European resident I don't mind this subscription being exclusive to the US. The additional content and discounts are fair and fine. I can still get all the regular Tone Poets. Maybe even for a discounted price if I'm a little patient. BUT: Adding subscription exclusive titles sucks! I really hope BN will make these titles available to all customers later as well. Just without the numbering and the print. The limitation to a 1.000 copies can even be problematic for subscribers. Imagine BN gets more than 1.000 subscribers who all would want to buy Sammy Davis jr....
Sorry, but they’re not rewarding loyalty outside of the USA. I’m really disappointed, I haven’t bought all the Tom Poets, but I have most of them right now I don’t feel like pre ordering another Tone Poet until Blue Note get it right for UK and EU customers . Just hope they don’t do the same thing for the Classic Series. The Blue Note Store in the UK is hopeless and rarely offers the discounts that the U.S. store does, maybe Blue Note can take ownership of the UK outlet and that would help smooth out some of the logistic difficulties.
I guess I get it, but I don't like it. Not familiar with all the '25 releases but if the past is any guide there will be too many I'm not interested in to make it worth it, even to get the membership only releases.
This punishes loyal customers internationally. I don’t agree with geographical exclusives. You said half your views are international so they split the customer base not sure why any company would do that intentionally…
Yep 50% from outside the U.S., which is always surprising to me. Joe Harley commented here and said an ex-U.S. plan is in the works, so fingers crossed for everyone

the reesition of sunset eyes was released by jordi pujol on jazzworkshop. the sound is good and has nothing to do with a bootleg release. Jordi Pujol and his label have always done a good job and had the merit of reissuing records that no one wanted to make

Nice list but I am going to pick and choose .. labels are now starting to take advantage of going direct.. Rhino, OJC now BN .. in a way it’s disconcerting but it’s business
yes, I think sales volume may be declining just a bit, so they are chasing margin by going direct.
@ for the avid collector I think it works .. too many people in this hobby think that this is an investment. In a way it is but it’s not a monetary investment as much as an investment in just enjoying the music
It will certainly be a boost to the cash flow, makes me wonder if they struggling a bit financially
I’m a completist so my 2025 record budget is blown! 🤣🤣
What do you think of the extremely limited OJC Color Vinyl Editions put out by Newberry Comics? They only make 500 to 900 copies of each title.
With my DeGritter and the abundance of the original OJCs from the 1980s, I get great sound for a great price
**Quick edit add to say great video & thank you bud.👍🏻
*From their initial date(s), I have bought every BN TP except two & every BN CV title except 2.
Johnson and Kai Winding, Oliver Nelson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, Bill Evans, Cal Tjader, Hubert Laws, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Randy Brecker, John McLaughlin, George Duke, Mark Egan, and special guest Jamie CullumHubert Laws, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Randy Brecker, John McLaughlin, George Duke, Mark Egan, Jamie Cullum, Charles Mingus, Herbie Mann, to name a few. Look up his Wikipedia page for Creed Taylor.
I agree, there is a lot of his work that hasn’t been touched, whether from the Bethlehem, ABC Paramount, Verve or CTI labels
@ the point being there isn’t much of an incentive to subscribing except the chance to get the exclusives..
Jacknife was released as a twofer by BN is the mid 70s. I am not sure you mentioned that. But the cover was hideous, so a quality reissue of this title is overdue.
Chet Baker in Europe!
good eye!
Well they are not rewarding their loyal overseas customers. BTW, how do you sell your vinyl? any advice?
I sympathize with international collectors but also know that international shipping is dicey/pricey for these subscription models (see VMP, but I've quit them after getting puni$hed for being a yearly subscriber). That said, I've already paid my $800, as I don't have original pressings of any of these and am not going to seek them out.
Very strong release schedule. Blue Serge, Complete Communion, Freedom Sound, and for me, Blues in Trinity are stand outs. Tubby Hayes appearance on the latter is a big draw.
Save the added cost of a TP and buy USED LPS, extreme Marketing, people wake up!!!
Awesome FOMO strategy, guess their really trying to ensure sales
I think i have the hiccups!
The show must go on
Only for american clients ! It’s a shame!!!
You can get a American mailbox that then sends you the items to your country
We're working on an ex-US solution ...logistics are complicated but we're working on it. Stay tuned.
Subscription exclusives 👎👎👎
SAME
Sorry but the whole thing with exclusive releases (now in this ..episode only for us customers ) is wrong, disturbing and unprofessional. Come on.
Hmmm not impressed as USA only so rest of world excluded
you could get a American mailbox and then they send the items to your country
As a European resident I don't mind this subscription being exclusive to the US. The additional content and discounts are fair and fine.
I can still get all the regular Tone Poets. Maybe even for a discounted price if I'm a little patient.
BUT: Adding subscription exclusive titles sucks! I really hope BN will make these titles available to all customers later as well. Just without the numbering and the print.
The limitation to a 1.000 copies can even be problematic for subscribers. Imagine BN gets more than 1.000 subscribers who all would want to buy Sammy Davis jr....
apart from Montara and Andrew! nothing really that exciting.
@@ognet I’ve pinned a comment by Joe Harley at the top. It sounds like Blue Note is working on an option for customers outside the U.S.
@@jazzvinylcollectorWell I’ll keep my fingers crossed but it sounds like we’ll at least miss out on the first exclusive release as it ships next month
I guess I get it, but I don't like it. Not familiar with all the '25 releases but if the past is any guide there will be too many I'm not interested in to make it worth it, even to get the membership only releases.
Nothing changes......the subscrition is simply an option.
@@joeharley8396 what changes is I can't get the subscription only titles.
Hurts records stores.... that's why I do not buy the Rhino releases...
Stop putting Barcodes on classic albums.
Ah yes, "The Dead Poets Society" disgusting the way you've treated Overseas buyers, many of whom, like me have bought every Tone Poet so far. Thanks for the loyalty reward 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
the reesition of sunset eyes was released by jordi pujol on jazzworkshop. the sound is good and has nothing to do with a bootleg release. Jordi Pujol and his label have always done a good job and had the merit of reissuing records that no one wanted to make
