    Okay Matt that intro sure had me laughing. Darn near spilled my coffee. I can see for me where it would be real easy to end up crowding the eye before getting enough deer hair on. I have to really watch because it seems my tendency is to not leave enough space by the eye when I’m tying. Great job on that hopper Matt.

    Man that intro was priceless. I was laughing more than you were. Total entertainment. Now for the job you did on this hopper? Amazing. Very impressive Sir. This one will have to wait before I’m trying this. But it has to be a productive fly. Just a great overall video. Thank you.

      I think so too Mike. I actually thought I was having good luck with a green foam hopper one day (a couple of fish in an hour or so), then lost it in a tree and tried this one... and then started catching a lot more than I was with the foam one. (I still tie a lot of foam ones though, they're just much easier!)

    Nice tie. I have a love/hate relationship with this fly. Near the base of the dam that creates the lake our Maine camp is on, there are a couple of really good spots for casting to landlocked salmon. After not fishing there for several years, I hiked in & was surprised to find a newly renovated cleared area covered in tall grass & full of grass hoppers with some being blown into the water. I had no hopper flies & couldn’t get a fish to look at my flies. I went home & spent the rest of the day & eve tying these hoppers. I returned the next day to find the “field” bulldozed & no hoppers in sight. 😢

    Another great video!
    I need to make another batch of these.
    This is a staple for me. Last weekend while backpacking here in Idaho the cutthroat stole or tore up the last few that I had! Terrible, just terrible!

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going through flies because the fish are tearing them up is not a bad problem to have!! Where were you fishing in Idaho? I did a float trip on the North Fork of the Salmon River last fall. A beautiful area!

      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Karl, it's like Michael said on here, sometimes the uglier you tie it the more effective it can be. :-) I've got plenty of flies I would fish with, but wouldn't want anybody to see me with them. Or if they did, I wouldn't admit to having tied them myself!

    • @karljones6594

    Anytime you have to "keep" hollow hair in any given position, the difficulty increases. Non foam hoppers are one of those patterns for sure. Nice tie of a fairly complex pattern. Great job Matt.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate it Todd. I think I just need to tie a lot more hair bugs, muddlers, maybe some frogs and mice to get better at the deer hair thing. These flies just take forever and make a huge mess!

    • @toddslichter7831
      @toddslichter7831 3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @michaelmerlino6753

    Nice tie,Matt.What I have found is the more sloppy the wings and legs are the more effective the fly.Seems to look more like a bug struggling on the surface or on that has died.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's still on my to-do list Joe, but I don't have all the materials yet. Otherwise I'll have to substitute something for the yellow seal, and silver badger. It is a cool pattern, but I don't want to have to make too many substitutions.

    • @joemcnicholl4361
      @joemcnicholl4361 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SavageFlies the way i would tie it is too tie in your silver tag and then a red golden pheasant tail tie in your wrib and yellow floss and wrap up half way upand and then put in an orange hackle.then you tie in your tinsel and and black floss wrap it up and then put in a black badgrer hackle you can use a black one tho

      That's a great description of these deer hair heads! We might need to come up with a series of flies named after Muppets. I could definitely do a green Oscar the Grouch. And a yellow Big Bird. Oh wait, that's Sesame Street. Are they Muppets? Now that I think about it, they may not be. Like Marvel and DC. Two separate universes. Elmo and Mrs. Piggy probably don't know each other. Oh man, I'm too old. :-)

  • @themazamen
    @themazamen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My favorite hopper pattern. I was just fishing it last night and couldn’t keep the panfish off of it. You’re too hard on yourself. I thought your tie turned out fine. I find drowned hoppers are sometimes more effective and your looser head would help to keep the fly lower in the film. I never tried an upright turkey wing with this pattern. I always tie them flat and they usually get split from me supporting the fly when I pack the deer hair. I might have to give it a try.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh, thanks man! But I didn't really do that upright wing on purpose. :-) But I know what you're saying, a lot of times my turkey feathers end up splitting too. But... on the Joe's Hopper, they are often tied in as two separate pieces anyway so it probably doesn't matter too much. Thanks for the note!
