“50 to 60 Smoky Mountain flies”. I can’t wait! I’m so glad I found this channel! Good job on the fly by the way

Hey, thanks! It might take me the rest of the year, but I've got the time. 😁

This one is definitely going to build some tying skills. Great looking for sure. I’ll need to pray for steady hands the day I try this one. Another great and enjoyable video Matt. Thank you Sir.

Oh yeah, these Smoky Mountain patterns use a lot of brown and grizzly!

Thanks Russell! I'm hoping to start it in the next couple of weeks, and I expect I'll have about 10-12 flies in the series.

For strength, I'd put a thin coat of cement on the quill body too. I know some think it "adds weight" to a dry fly. I haven't seen any problems doing that to my quills.

That's a good idea and I've seen it on some of the quill-bodied Catskill flies. I imagine the tail and lower part of the body on this one will ride in the surface film anyway. But I agree, it probably doesn't add too much weight. (And would look cooler too!)

Matt I learned a lot of tying tricks from the likes of Eric Leiser and Dick Talleur.Try this one for a double split tail, two light threads on the top of the hook bend, tie in the tails, pull the two threads between the tail, two turns of tying thread to lock them.No messing around to get them positioned.Try it next time.

Wow, that sounds like a great trick! Will definitely try it next time. Thanks Mike.

    This one seems hard

It's not too bad Barbara. Quill bodies can be a little tricky, but it doesn't take too many to get the hang of it. :-)

I thought the fly by that name was an HG Tapply fly from the old Field and Stream "Tap's Tips" section.

You might be right Doug! I was probably going by what I read in Don Kirk's book. I might have to research this a bit more. Thanks for the note!

@@SavageFlies If I remember correctly (big if at my age) HG's son wrote an article about a year when HG, his fishing buddy and his son fished the fly for an entire season and kept detailed notes. Results showed it didn't hurt them at all.
