  • Michael Fremer is the editor of The Tracking Angle and senior editor of The Absolute Sound. Michael never fails to entertain, provoke and raise eyeballs with his avid advocacy for vinyl and his highly opinionated takes on all things audio.
Listen for his takes on old people in the audio industry, young people taking over vinyl, technology improvements in all things audio, distortion, state-of-the-art headphones, how to listen, why he got a headshot, how his father broke a Modern Jazz Quartet record over his head, how he opened for The Jam, Television and Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band, and how he appeared on MTV with Peter Gabriel and Neil Young and Dave Mustaine. His advice for people in their 20's: "Whatever you're doing now, make sure it's important."

Michael is my mentor! Anybody that says he's snobbish doesn't know him. I told him three years ago at a show that I had a Technics SL-B2 (now replaced with a P6) and I hadn't even used it yet out of fear, he asked me several questions and then spent time with me with pointers I'll never forget. The next couple shows I saw him at, he remembered me and spent time with me. I appreciate him.

He carried the torch for vinyl for decades, when everyone else had turned their back on it.

@@trackingangle929 I still have an offer to you for $20K that you can't hear differences in cables other than shitty cables that act as passive equalizers. And every time I make the offer all I hear from you is the sound of crickets chirping. Dude you don't have super human hearing. You claim you can always hear digital and yet you missed it at least twice with Mofi Abraxas One Step and the AP Roger Waters Amused to Death. You can't erase those reviews Mikey. And apparently you can't hear the gross frequency response problems with your own system. Your hearing and your listening skills are at best questionable much less superior.

@@trackingangle929 Oh look at that. My response was removed. So I'll post it again. I still have an offer to you personally. A $20K bet that you can't reliably distinguish any cables (other that ones that are so poorly designed that they measurably act as passive equalizers) by ear alone in a well designed test. Every time I remind you of this offer all I hear from you is crickets chirping. You are the guy who has claimed he can always hear digital and yet you failed to hear digital in at least two of your reviews. The Santana Abraxas Mofi One step and the AP Roger Waters Amused to Death. As for what I can hear or you can hear. I know I can easily hear the frequency response errors in your system. Apparently you can not. Let's see if this one gets deleted too.

We need more people like Mr Fremmer not less. Id like to know how many of these snipes say that negative stuff to his face. So much jealousy over what; that someone has more knowledge than they. If you listen to him you learn something which is unique. If I could ask him a question it would be how he handled all the “weird” in Hollywood. I wasn’t able to when I had my shot.

With the cost of Vinyl going sky high I’m sure it will have an affect on sales, instead of buying 2-3 albums at a time, it’s hard to afford 1

The only thing that could kill vinyl is the crappy pressing plants like GZ and a bunch of others with a greed driven business model, who think they can just keep pumping out junk to a market that will continue to absorb their crap and never go away, but they bite the hand that feeds them and the record buying public are getting smarter and won't continue to tolerate it. If spotify go hi-rez, vinyl will revert to a boutique, niche interest.

I was there, and mostly what I saw, as far as the attendees were concerned, was white, male, and old... like all the other shows. Some younger guys were working the show for sure, but almost no women. Technology is improving in loudspeakers, class D amps, headphones etc. But the high end always was and still is heavily based on nostalgia, stuck in the past on things like passive loudspeakers, vacuum tubes, and vinyl. All fun, but certainly not advancing the performance quality in any way.

High end is based on performance not nostalgia. Class D has reached “high end”. You are quite divisive and creating division where there is none. Tube preamp microphones are “high end”.
