  • The title says it all. Pat takes the first steps with Chinaco with a bosalito and a spade bit. The spade has no chains, reins, or curb strap. This enables Chinaco to find the balance on his own. It's only fitting to see this milestone in Chinaco's journey on the first day of a new year. This has been great to witness from the very beginning, and always looking forward to Pat's next step with Chinaco. Thank you Pat and Deb for sharing another terrific year of your adventures.

      Agreed! This milestone to begin a new year was perfect for all, but especially for Pat . Such a gift.

    Chinaco looks very relaxed and accepting of the spade and bosilita. It is an honor to have been able to follow Chinaco's training. Thank you Pat and Deb. ,,,,We finally got a warm day here and were out on the trail . Our last ride was Dec 3rd. Way too long out of the saddle. Nova Scotia in winter = barely any saddle time !

    Good to see Chinaco's progress. He's grown so big! He looks relaxed, but eager to test the options in his search for the way to carry his new bit. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

    We enjoy seeing Chinaco's journey. We live in Sulphur Springs, TX, and live in the middle of Cutting house and Team roping country. We have several large cattle operations and a small herd ourselves. I stay busy on the ranch/farm that I do not have much interest in an arena. So, I share your videos with anyone and everyone that will listen. We love Chinaco and look forward to his transition into a true Spade bit horse. ~Thomas Wilson

    He was such a cute little foal, he's gorgeous now but I can't wait to see him after he fills out, he'll be absolutely stunning.

    Pretty neat to see your colt progress. I started following you when you had 100 subscribers. Crazy that you have 47k. I know why you have that many, you sure are handy Pat Puckett.

    Good Morning,
    Happy New Years 🎉.
    My question is there really some Correction bits out there are mainly it's just Collection of bits ??
    Thanks , Love your Videos keep them coming Im learning as days go by.

    • @ChessHorseTraining
      @ChessHorseTraining ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's bits called "correction bits". They're western bits meant to induce pain almost immediately after contact. They are used on reiners mostly and the rider will teach the horse to do everything on a loose rein by snatching the bit if they misbehave at all. Not all riders that use them do this, of course, but that's the main purpose. A spade is an entirely different concept, a bit that is built to signal the horse with a very light touch. Of course a spade could be painful if used wrong as well. That's just my thoughts.

    • @tw_neo708
      @tw_neo708 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChessHorseTrainingI agree that they’re harsh bits, but generally, standard correction ports aren’t tall enough or picked up on enough to cause the port to dig into the roof of the mouth (see cathedrals for that action).
      The reason that they’re harsh with no exceptions is that the 90 degree angle and placement/width of the port will trap and squeeze the tongue when not picked up on.

    great work! Happy 2023. what are your critirias to choose the spade?

  • @alisonevans7403
    @alisonevans7403 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It looks like the bosalita fits snugger than a regular basal. Does that change how you use it? Seems like there would be less pre signal and less release, from the horse's point of view? Just curious.
    Thanks so much for the knowledge you're sharing. Happy New Year to you and Deb!

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By the time we reach this stage, the horse is ridden 90% off of the rider’s body and 10% off of the bosalito. The bosalito has to fit under the bridle. So at this point the presignal and release doesn’t have to be as pronounced.

    Very nice. Last video you were "hanging him" in the spade. How long did you do that before you stepped aboard with bosalita and packing the spade? Was it time or something about how Chinaco reacted/handled himself that determined the "hangtime"?

  • @meycoe

    so what does a correction bit look like compared to a spade bit? I'm sure you covered this before but I'm looking for side-by-side pix

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don’t own a correction bit so you’ll have to Google it. It’s a shanked bit with multiple joints and a port. No shanked bit should have any joints. We have a pretty big library of videos and I encourage you to search for answers by putting the words Pat Puckett followed by the subject you are curious about in the search bar. Here’s one that came up when I did a search:

      Another thing that deb (I believe deb writes the comments) didn’t mention is the port in it. A way I’ve heard spades described before to an English rider is like a Mullen mouth or low ported Mullen with additions over it. Correction ports have an upside down U shape in the middle between the joints that traps the tongue and causes unnecessary pain.
