- In this video I show you how to make a traditional Chinese woodworking marking gauge. The gauge is based on a design I saw from a Chinese woodworking master. My version is a bit simpler than his, but the basic concept is the same. I've decided to give it an English descriptive name of a Half Moon Marking Gauge.

It's definitely useful. Simple? I am glad it looks simple to make. Though I doubt anyone can make one successfully on the first try.
John Zhu Sorry, my mistake. I should have said “Seems simple to operate”. Getting the holes in the right place and especially getting the hexagonal shapes in the correct position must have been very aggravating! Lots of trial and error I’m sure. Thanks again!
@@MRrwmac I get it now. It is super simple. There was a time when people relied on feel and skill and training rather than technology. This harkens back to a simpler, more civilized time.
That is AWESOME!! I saw the original video from China a few years ago, and wondered just how that all went together. Thank you for making that marking gauge and posting it too - I wanted to know more about this cool tool the minute I saw it. Keep up the good work, I wish there was access to more traditional woodworking coming out of China.

I think that the sharpening of the markers should be in the form of a "half moon" instead of a chisel, that way there would be no need to mark the angle, since the crescent shape would cover any angle of marking.
I saw, in a video of Granpa Amu, that he made a marker with simple nails, the marks are made by the round heads of the nails.
Try to make one with a round and edge and see if you have to mark the angle or not. Grandpa Amu just replicates something that's been done for hundred of years; I don't care to replicate. I believe before death comes, one could keep trying to improve, or sit in a hole.
Nicely done. A 4-in-1 marking gauge would definitely come in handy quite often with joinery projects.
John, are the thumb screws necessary considering the tightness of fit? Is it fear that with use they will loosen?
The thumb screws are more than strong enough to hold the cutter. The cutter should be a tight fit to start. You shouldn't be able to pull or push the cutters in/out with your hand. The original idea with this marking gauge probably was just 2 nails nailed into a board; use it once and throw away. Great Q!
John, good to have you back. Question: What would be the narrowest mark to the edge of a workpiece with this marking gauge?
Good to be back. The smallest setting is ~1/16" of an inch. If you look at the rotating video at the end, you'll notice on cutter #2 there is a little notch cut out in the body, this allows the cutter to sit in further. Great Q!

Is there a place on the internet where someone teach ancient Chinese carpentry step by step?
I have seen the videos from the Xin Quansheng workshop, but they are not very clear on the aspect of the assembly construction drawing, which is what I would like to learn.
I learned only by watching 辛全生 on youtube and yuku; his instructions are crystal clear to me; I understand him %100. There is an old Chinese saying "纸上谈兵“ is useless.

Stupid question what do you use a marking gauge for ???
To mark cutting lines for mortises, tenons, dadoes, rabbets and so on. It provides a clean mark with severed wood fibers and a positive spot to insert the cutting edge of your chisel or whatever tool you are using.
