  • Here's a fun chucka-chucka rhythm that any harmonica player can learn. With Adam Gussow of Modern Blues Harmonica

Note: I'm using a key of A harmonica. (I'm playing it cross harp in the key of E.)

Hi, mr Gussow. I am sorry this may be a bit off-topic, but I want to say this.
I have tried a bit of harmonica, but I mainly play the guitar. What I want to say though is that despite this, I have learned so much about the blues in general both from your harmonica lessons and from your insights in politics, history and the culture of this music.
    Thank you!

Hey Mr gussow I've had your crossroads cover rotating in my my playlist for a year or 2 now and I just got 20 minutes into a great Netflix documentary when I heard the name "sterling mcgee". It was only then, that I realised it was you and found my way back to your TH-cam. amazing work brother,,fantastic story!

I'm glad to see this lesson revisited! I've been using _your_ nucka-tucka rhythm for years. I've tried others' syllabic approaches, but nothing I've found works as well as this. In fact, I've actually used it to sneak FRACTIONS into young students' music lessons. I start with long whole notes, then divide them in half, then quarters, then eighths, sixteenths, and thirty-seconds. It's also a great way to _start_ a train song, as you know. Add it to the list of reasons I have to thank you.

The hardest thing here is to try and somehow breathe and not pass out while doing this rhythm :D :D

Hello there! some time back I had to get all my soft palette removed from the back of my mouth to decrease my snoring at night. Would I be correct in saying that this could be problematic for me? Would you agree? Or am I making excuses for myself? Would love to hear your point of view...

    DEE'ford Bailey, innit? :)
Thanks for a fun and effective lesson.
I've got Tony's book, too... bought it new in 67. Was it helpful to you when you were starting to learn, Adam?

I'm okay with either pronunciation. And yes, Glover's book was helpful, but more for the comfortingly knowing voice, setting priorities and hipping me to the great players, than for the actual tabs, which often raised as many questions as they answered.

My experience with the book was very similar to yours-- that's a good review.
I ran across you just recently on the tube. Don't know how I could have been unaware of you [and Satan and Adam] all this time. But I'm glad to finally "make your acquaintance", better late than never. Looking forward to more of your insight into the harp and whatever else is on your mind.
