  • A step by step guide on how to deal with roundabouts in UK. Using DVSA and UK Highway Code Rules. This video is perfect for learners preparing for driving test or just refreshing your roundabout rules or if you’re visiting UK. Knowledge builds confidence so this is perfect for you if you’re learning to drive. Save money on lessons by understating roundabouts from this video. This video is created by highly knowledgeable grade A Instructor Shahel Khan.
Visit Eastend Driving School in East London
    www.goeastend.c...
Roundabout can be very daunting experience, especially a roundabout in UK with many roads joining in. However, once you understand the rules and principles and follow the hazard drill correctly it can be very easy and simple junction to deal with. The key is using the MSPSL routine correctly and timing it right too.
In this video we will discuss about how roundabouts work and who you need to give priority to. Then we will talk about how to identify the roundabout in good time. We will also explain the clock method and divide the roundabout into left and right section. This will make it easy to understand how to use the indicator (signal) correctly and where/how to position as you approach the roundabout.
In this video we will guide you step by step on how to take different turns on roundabouts. Explain how to use mirror, signal, positioning, speed and look (MSPSL). Also, how to assess, decide and act before merging in to the roundabout (LADA). We will show you on this video how to turn first left at the roundabout, second left and turning right, including first, second and third exit.
This video can be extremely helpful for new learners and for someone taking driving lessons and learning to drive. This video is recommended by many driving instructors for their pupil to watch before practicing roundabout lessons. Test centres like Goodmayes, Hither Green, Barking, Wansted, Sidcup and almost all the test centres in United Kingdom have at least one or two roundabouts on the route that you’ll need to deal with. So, this video will be very helpful for you to watch before going to your driving test.
This video is very helpful for anyone coming to UK/London and need to learn the rules and regulation of the roads. Driving in UK, there are lots of roundabouts unlike some country you hardly come a cross any roundabouts. There for I will advice you to please watch this video before driving in UK London or any other city.

I like how the text-to-speech engine had to clear its throat at 04:34. You could have just spoken yourself instead of using a TTS engine. A TTS engine makes it less easy to follow. Also, it would be great to see a video on negotiating roundabouts that are 3-exit, 5- or 6-exit roundabouts with varying numbers of lanes. This is what trips people up because they're not at all at described in this video.

I understand indicating right when changing lanes before the roundabout, but why continuing to indate when already on the roundabout? It's confusing to other drivers as it can indicate that you can either take the 3rd exit or the next one and go back where you came from. And what if the roundabout has 5 exits? In my opinion, once on the correct lane you should only indicate when leaving the roundabout (left indicator). Am i right or am i missing something? Is it a legal requirement to indicate right?

Hi Eastend - good explanation of roundabouts. I especially like the "clock" model in combination of thinking of a roundabout like a conventional intersection - that is a good teaching technique for students. One question - is the head checks (shoulder checks) missing as part of the sequence? How do drivers check their blind spots, especially when they're crossing lanes of traffic? Thanks for the video, Cheers Rick

    • @shahel
      @shahel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Check bs if you're in doubt or if you lost track of something. Like you saw a bike then it disappeared. Checking mirrors on time with awareness is important. If it's safe to do so check over your shoulder.

In UK South or any major city make sure you know which exit you will be taking before getting to the roundabout, especially if you will be taking the third exit. In the video it shows an un-busy lane, it is usually v busy, so get in lane in plenty of time. Don't panic :)

Make sure you don't cut people up on the roundabout from the left. Once in lane for your exit . Stay in it. Many a time someone barges across in my path on a roundabout in Swindon where my lane splits into two. There lane is dotted to begin with then solid stripes to head to the 12 o'clock exit. But they shove in to go right instead !

@@melissanewton4587 When you're in the left lane and you're going straight ahead do you signal? How come in the video he goes straight ahead, and uses the signal after the first exit, yet at the end, he says "no signal for going left, except at first exit" didn't he use the left signal straight ahead?

Hi, maybe Im stupid, but I just cant get 4:20 uk round about rule.. Car which is turning right at roundabout is exiting roundbt into left outside line when he is leaving inside line empty and cutting all through on exit.. When he can easyly leave outside line for other cars which are turning left, and just after exiting roundbt, indicate left and take left line.. Sometimes when Im turning left ( and cars coming from the top and turning right) all people sitting and waiting till all roundbt will br clear, just bexause some idiot will decide take exit cutting all lines and go into left line

Question: at 5:55, why exit at the left/outer lane and not at the inner/right lane? If this is the way a roundabout is to be used, when is the inner/right lane of a roundabout exit to be used?

    • @johnbower
      @johnbower ปีที่แล้ว

You should never ever exit a roundabout from the inner right lane, if you are already in the inner right lane make sure you merge into the outer left lane before you reach the exit you intend to use.

Quite a good video, but some of the comments show just how clueless many learners are, so I'd have added that despite these basic rules there will always be exceptions e.g. for an exit at 1 O'Clock it may sometimes be more appropriate to use the left hand lane.
Driving is not an exact science, and requires a lot of interpretation and common sense, which explains why so many people don't get it.

You are turning right and another car has entered the roundabout on your left while you are in the centre. If there are two exit lanes, do you wait for the other car to pass, go behind it and exit into the left lane if clear or exit into the right hand lane? Real life, heavy traffic situations would be useful.

    • @milo-sq3sd
      @milo-sq3sd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Lee Coppack hi. Check your mirror see if the car on left using left lane and if it's safe to do you can use the right lane to exit. If it's not safe you could 1. Slow down 2. Keep going round the roundabout. Hope that answers your question.

In my part of the US they are just adding these--called traffic circles--and those encountering them for the first time tend to go straight across the middle. One of those people drove straight into a house.
Others assume, "fastest car has the right of way."
In Massachusetts roundabouts--called "rotaries" there--have been in place since the advent of the motor car or before, but until recently the legal right of way belonged to the traffic entering the roundabout, not to those exiting. In heavy traffic you could only exit the roundabout illegally.

    What about pedestrians.
I got the following question in the theory test:
*_You approach a roundabout and see a pedestrian getting ready to cross. Who must give way?_*
    *A.* No one
    *B.* You
    *C.* The pedestrian
    *D.* Whoever was there last
I got this wrong. I said the pedestrian must give way.
My thinking being that if the pedestrian has not started to cross, then he must wait for a suitable gap in the traffic.
The correct answer is *B* You, the driver must give way. *_(Rule 187, Highway Code)_*
I still think this is wrong because it is suggesting that if you see a pedestrian standing still, at the kerb, waiting to cross, you should stop to let him cross.
I'm sorry, but we're talking about a roundabout here, not a zebra crossing.
OK, if the ped is already crossing , then it is simple common sense not to run him over but to yield and give way.
But a ped just standing, waiting to cross?
    *_PAH !_*
    >
PS: In the interests of efficient typing, *_"he = he/she"_* (my poor overworked fingers).

You are correct B is wrong.Unless the pedestrian is actually crossing the road with a foot on the road you SHOULD give way but DON'T have too.Should and must are different!
Unfortunately, the Highway Code is compiled by breaurocrats who are unskilled drivers.
      Perhaps they DON'T drive!

In my home town the traffic dirrection is on the right not on the left, and I'm well aware not every country used the right as traffic dirrection. This is why round about in my home town are counter clockwise because the traffic dirrection is on the right. I know a left turn in a left dirrected traffic is equal to a right turn on the right directed traffic.

I was there with my german car and I nearly caused an accident with an english driver. There was a 5 lanes round about and then a second and a third behind. I was like "OMG". But after three 360° rounds I was able the leave it.

when turning 90 degrees right, you approach in lane 2, you should leave in lane 2, saves a crunch if someone is turning left from your last exit in a hurry into lane one. Never commit yourself up the inside of a vehicle on a roundabout.

With no signs helping you exit on roundabouts you will not be familiar with the exits in roundabouts to help you where you want to end up.

Pedestrian 'kindergarten' intro to how to do it. Not sure I like the text-to-speech explanation but it ticks (almost all) the right boxes.
    The cross-roads analogy is excellent.
This takes 7 minutes to explain one diagram in the Highway Code - but strangely I like it..... the animation is clear and clever. Where did you get the software?
For further development, I would add one or two 'advanced driving' tips:
    1. 'less is more" - if you hold back from traffic ahead and take it slow, you get more time to look for 'your' gap and will be able to take it more easily with a clearer view and with a greater safety margin in case the driver ahead hesitates, yet probably quicker than if you'd driven up to the line and stopped.
Well done - I'll be posting a lot of stuff from 'live' situations on the 'How to' playlist of my channel soon.

This video is a breath of fresh air. Trying to explain to people to go straight on you use the left hand lane is frustrating. People in my town use the right lane so they can cut across then indicate left to come off meanwhile there's someone on the left going straight on who they are cutting up

this is total bollocks, look in highway code there is no 12 o'clock rule, this rubbish is causing many accidents as 12 o'clock on the sign wont always match the 12 o'clock on the roundabout its self so you have 2 sets of drivers judging 12 o'clock to be in different places. End result insurance settle nearly all roundabout claims as 50/50. example people approaching this roundabout from the road on the left, their straight across is actually at 1 o'clock, common sense people will still use left lane, people taught by today's 12 o'clock instructors will be using the right

12 o'clock is denoted by the sign you should have looked at on approach.

Hmm. TWO things seem to have changed since I passed my driving test a number of years ago: It USED to be -
    1) Left hand lane for turning left AND straight on; Right hand lane for turning right AND straight on. 2) At TWO roundabouts I frequently use, drivers are always using the LEFT lane to drive to the RIGHT-HAND exits - including a Cooperative artic lorry today. Criminal driving! 👿

VERY generalist brief. Does not really go into the skills of Planning, Observation and Anticipation on approach. No mention on 'blocker' strategy when approaching to emerge into roundabout. What about - amongst other things.....mini roundabouts and conventional/unconventional roundabouts???

This doesn't apply to 99% of rounabouts. Some aren't even circular. So stupid. They're completely up to the examiner in how THEY choose to do them. Why is there no clear answers? Everyone know how to do the most basic of rounabouts, there's even fuckin road markings here, a luxury most also don't have.
