      @@learnit4499 Yes. is the guy/ girl who is on your right in the correct lane ? are they suddenly going to change lane and maybe cut you up or push you off the road. Seriously mirror checks are really important. You might be a perfect driver (unlikely) but its about the other drivers.

    I have a learning difficulty which means it takes me a while to learn things. Longer than most
    Sad to say it means I'm a bit slow
    And I didn't understand it too well, no matter how well my instructor explained it. And now watching this video explain it simply, I not as afraid to try roundabouts next lesson now :) Makes a lot of sense
    Thank you :)

    Passed today with 5 minors, I am so happy. I had a month before my theory ran out too. I kept putting it off, and must have paid thousands. Finally got up the courage to do it. My advice would be to believe in yourself and your own skills. It's not as hard as you think. And the time flys by . If you think you've made a mistake, and have already failed, keep going, it was probably only a minor fault. Chat with the instructor, and be friendly with them. :) Good luck to everyone.
    BTW, I'm 46, and am from America, so it's very different than right side no roundabouts, I passed my test over there at 18, but this, this is what you call driving. 😁

    I've lived in the US for 25 years, since my early 30s, and roundabouts are easily the trickiest part of driving back in the UK again on my trips home. We're starting to get a few mini-roundabouts in Palo Alto, but nothing like the multi-lane monsters you have over there. This video was really useful "revision" for my upcoming summer trip, and I was especially interested in the advice in the comments to go around again if the lane on the left is occupied. I think that advice would have saved me a couple of honks on previous trips home! Thanks guys!

    When turning right at roundabouts in my lessons, there's a lot to focus on. Due to this, I find the blindspot and mirror checks to move over to come off into the left lane quite tricky and rushed. And whenever I make my move over to the left it feels like I don't really register if it's safe to move because I'm so focused on other things. I'm not fully confident it's clear to move. Any tips on this? I also previously found it tricky to judge the speed of others in my wingmirrors when joining a dual carriageway. Also same problem of uncertainty of if next to me is clear when changing lanes on standard roads. I'm guessing there's a common denominator here? Much appreciated Adv!!

I'm OK with most aspects but the lane change to come off I find absolutely horrendous. I'm looking, but not "seeing", become disoriented and panic badly. There are no rules about the amount of times we must observe, as it depends on the situation. At a wide open junction one look might be enough to see that it is safe to proceed, but at a closed junction we might need to look several times.

    I'm hoping you maybe able to answer a question for me? Let's say I'm approaching a two lane roundabout. I'm in the left-hand lane, signaling to turn left. If another car is coming from the opposite side of the roundabout to me and is coming off to where I want to exit left, should they stay in lane and exit the roundabout in the right-hand lane (which means I don't have to give way to them and still go left) or can they exit the roundabout, change lane to leave on the left-hand lane and I wait? I hope that made sense.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this situation we would Give Way to the car on the roundabout, as we can’t predict which lane the other car wants. Perhaps they need the left lane on the exit, as they are about to take another left turn shortly after the roundabout?

    • @rainbowvisionart8025
      @rainbowvisionart8025 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool thank you for replying. The reason I asked is I turned left in this scenario and the driver of the other vehicle when ballistic! Bibbing his horn, hand gestures. There was no direct left exit straight after leaving the roundabout. It's hard when a roundabout is so busy and others are waiting behind you. I get nervous to wait until the roundabout is completely clear.

    Thanks for the video, I’ve never been able to process these things. I do have a concern; people drive on the right in the US but on the left in countries further east; would that make a difference on which lane to go into? My guess is that driving on the right would be an exact mirror to this and make the roundabout move counterclockwise, which is difficult to visualize.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, roundabouts in countries that drive on the right (for example France) are an exact mirror image of here. So we give way to the left, and then turn right into the roundabout - and amazingly it only takes a little while to get used to! 👍🏼

    Hi.. Learner driver here. I have a really dumb and pointless question, but its been bugging me (maybe some1 knows?)
    Where I live, on approching a three lane entry point to a roundabout I've noticed two different methods for lane markings;
    Method 1 : Two lanes on approch indicating left or straight (left lane), and right (right lane). Left lane then splits into two to give the three lanes.
    method 2 : Two lanes on approch indicating left (left lane), and straight or right (right lane). Right lane then splits into two to give the three lanes.
    My question : Why sometimes split the left lane, and sometimes split the right lane, when the end result is the same (three lanes - left, straight, right)?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would imagine that the traffic planners are trying to maximise the traffic flow at the junctions. Perhaps at the first junction there are more people turning right, so it needs its own lane, but at the second junction there are more people turning left, so it would flow better the other way.

    What if you are in the inner lane on the roundabout and want to go out to the outer lane but a car is there. Do you stop and wait till the car passes you or do you make one more circle around the roundabout and exit when no one is on the outer lane?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If we can’t change lanes safely, then we should stay in our current lane. As you mentioned, we can either slow down and wait for the other car to pass us, or go all the away around the roundabout and take our exit next time. Just take whichever option seems safest for that situation. 👍🏼

    At the roundabout cars don’t signal when going around but my instructor encourages me to go then. Should I wait since they haven’t signalled?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Other drivers aren’t always going to indicate properly, so you must consider the other car’s speed and position. If that tells you they are about to leave the roundabout, then you can enter. This video might help: Entering Busy Roundabouts: th-cam.com/video/vGmvyLcBtm4/w-d-xo.html 👍🏼

    So let’s say ur turning right and ur in the correct lane, but there’s 2 lanes going right. If there’s someone next to you do you exit onto the right lane? And what if you want to go 3rd exit but they want to go 4th exit but they’re blocking you?

    • @iinavanplayz

      Someone next to you on your left*

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If someone else is beside you and it isn't safe to change lanes - don't! It's usually safer to go around the roundabout again and take the exit next time.

  • @TheBoqu

    Signal right when taking the 3rd exit while on the roundabout passing 1st exit, then switching left indicator while passing 2nd exit, right?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      If the 3rd exit is to the right, we should indicate right as we approach the roundabout and then left as we pass the 2nd exit.
      If the 3rd exit is straight ahead (as at some larger roundabouts) we would not indicate on approach, and then signal left as we pass the 2nd exit.

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Is it true that France, Belgium and Netherlands don't have to indicate left (in their case) while taking 3rd exit? I know for sure that its ok not to indicate left in Poland (its not required by the traffic law) and where in fact only around ≈30 % drivers do indicate left while remaining ≈70 % shun them for it arguing that left indicator is actually misleading. France has record number of roundabouts per capita. If they also collectively agreed that only indicating on the exit makes sense that would tell us something about how roundabout use evolves. And raises the question about integrity of international driving license.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every country has their own rules for driving - and for that reason there is no such thing as an international driving license that is valid everywhere. Most countries allow visitors to drive with the licence from their home country for up to one year - but it is the drivers duty to learn the local rules beforehand. Since we are in the UK we can only advise about the rules here. 👍🏼

    Hello, I find your videos very helpful. Thank you for sharing'em. I am learning car driving and its been very hard on me to come down to the second gear before a roundabout (or a traffic light). I can manage somehow to take a right/left turn with second gear though but a roundabout (or a traffic light ) is too hard for me. When I try to reduce the speed and apply the second gear(before a roundabout or a Traffic light) , my Instructor tells me that I brake the car too early and I need to apply this manuveaour just before . If I don't, then I fail to apply the maneuver ( break and apply second gear simultaneously) and can't apply second gear properly. In that case, although I apply the second gear, cant put my feet off of the clutch before the roundabout. Its too much for me at the last point :-( Not sure how should I manage this problem as I am fast approaching the driving test. If you could help me with any guidance on that , I'd truly appreciate that. Greets from Germany, Saurabh.

      These sort of problems are very common when drivers start their lessons, but gradually go away with time and practice. Your instructor is best placed to help you, but it sounds like you might need to consider delaying your driving test as basic skills like this must be perfected beforehand. Good luck!

      I would say braking early and applying second gear is ok, as you become more skilled then you can change gear alittle closer to the roundabout.

    I was wondering if you could help me. I'm confused about what to do with the clutch at roundabouts.
    When approaching the roundabout, I slow down and change gears (2nd gear). But I'm unsure do I keep the clutch down after changing gears and if it's clear then get the biting point and drive on and if it's not clear do I change to 1st gear and stop?
    Or
    Do I change gears just before the roundabout and let go off the clutch and only stop when it's not clear?
    Thanks

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ayesha Haseena Good question! Both options are ok, depending on how good the visibility is at the roundabout. Most of the time we change gear and lift the clutch before the roundabout, as the 'engine braking' helps gently slow the car down. However, sometimes (especially when we need to approach the roundabout really slowly) it is easier to keep the clutch down until we know it's safe to go. Ultimately do whatever seems best for that junction, as either will be ok on a test if the car is in full control 👍🏼

  • @annabelholland
    @annabelholland 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    But what if there is a junction on the left or the right like 30 feet before the roundabout? Do I signal before or after the junction?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We can only indicate when our turning is the next one on that side - so we must wait until we pass the junction before indicating for the roundabout. Even if this means that we signal later than normal, at least we won't mislead anyone.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s all in the Highway Code: in the absence of any lane markings we should normally use the left lane to go straight ahead.

  • @learnit4499

      So that we are aware of any traffic close to us. If there is another vehicle about to do something dangerous, we can change our position or speed to stay safe.

    What gear would you recommend i use for approaching roundabouts i usually use block change form 5th to 3th and leave in 3rd to enter if clear do think i use 2nd? (1.0 2001 seat ibiza my car is)

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Stephen Cox We always recommend learners to approach roundabouts in 2nd gear initially, as it gives a slower approach speed to allow enough time to check it is safe to enter the roundabout. However, once a driver has more experience we will sometimes use 3rd gear for larger roundabouts with good visibility.

    Wish every roundabout was that simple and easy, most roundabouts are overly convoluted and complicated, some of them don't even follow the clock rule as some times the normal lane for right exit on the roundabout is left lane on approach to the roundabout, which just completely throws the clock rule out of the window!!!!!!
