Debby, I can’t tell you how many times I have recently copied this link and posted it. I kept at it, until I finally figured out how big to make the tab, how far away to sew the seam. I have been using it on small crossbody bags. It finishes so nicely! Thank you for sharing your ideas and knowledge!
Debby I just want to thank you so much for your tutorial on the Clematis , I am a visual learner and it was a blessing to have your tutorial, tips and guidance! Thank you again so much! I made one today and its far from perfect but the next one I make will be much better my daughter and mom are already asking for one!
Thanks for the great videos, Debbie. I'm making my first Clematis a a cross body bag. I don't carry a wallet so I've added the card slots and a zip pocket. I love this idea of the D ring hack.
I love, love this, I’m always looking for the best/most professional way to do everything and this is it for D ring tabs. Thank you, can’t wait to try it!
Hi Debby you probably won’t see this message since it’s been so long since you posted but omg this is what I’ve been looking for I really don’t like the way the original wristlet connector looked this is sooo much better I’m definitely trying this thank you!
BRILLIANT!!!! I love your tutorials...you're a great teacher! I'm in the process of making my first leather clematis and am definitely going to use this hack for a cross body. Thank you again and please keep the videos coming😍
Hi Debby! I was wondering if sewing in the D ring loop at the time of sewing the top stitching would be an alternate way of attaching, instead of using a punch. Of course, I would reinforce the top stitching in that area. I don't own a rivet punch & was thinking of an alternative way to secure the D ring(s). Your videos are the best! Especially sharing helpful comments along the way, like the ¼" seam allowance tip on the Pfaff zipper foot. I had no clue and I have a Pfaff!
You can certainly try that... I’m not sure if the hardware would get in the way when you try to sew the side seams though... That would be the only issue that I could foresee...
Debby Hunker Thank you so much! I found it last night and watched. I couldn’t find it for the life of me, that’s when I left my comment. Then it appeared as a suggested video to watch 😆. I appreciate it!
O. M. Goodness. That hack is exactly what I have been looking for! Great video, great instructions. I have just found your videos and am really enjoying them. Your voice is very clear on your lovely introductions but quite muffled when you are up close. Maybe a separate mic...? Not a big problem though.
Hi Debby, thank you for sharing your insight on the bag making process with us. Do you happen to know the name/manufacturer of the red/black faux leather that you used on the Clematis bag? I love it and would like to try using it as well. Thank You.
I don’t know the manufacturer of that vinyl. I purchased it at a local fabric shop a couple of years ago. I wish I had a bolt of it to sell, lol, I’ve had so many requests for it!
I'm so sorry to have ruined you... lol! Thank you for your kind words! My focus is shifting more toward videos and teaching, so hopefully You will sew along with me in the future!
It’s a chalk marker. There are little chalk refills that go into the red holder. I think they are available on Amazon. Mine happens to be a Fons & Porter
Debbie, What a great tutorial! I'm getting ready to make my first Clematis, and plan on using this method for attaching the D-ring. Just watched your hack on the credit cards, plan on using that as well. Can I ask where you purchased the checkered vinyl? Those are my colors and would love to purchase some.
Debbie, Is your hack on the credit cards that Kathy mentioned for the Clematis? I liked this video 2 weeks ago and am now working on my finishing my first Clematis. I searched everywhere for this hack that I remembered. Finally found it again. whew!!
wow, you weren't kidding!! So many die sets to choose from. And of course when I opened all my packages of rivets I didn't write down the size of them lol. But this is by far the best deal I've seen for a press!
hi Debby, love your videos and instructions. Would you tell me what kind of rivet press you use and what dies are most important. I want to order one but not sure which one would be most helpful for doing bags. Thanks
Hi Sally! Thank you for your kind words! I actually have two rivet presses. One for each studio. In my home studio, I use a KamSnaps DK98, but it’s discontinued. In my Leduc studio, I have a press from PacCana in Calgary Alberta. It’s the same press that Tandy carries, but it’s $145 cheaper. KamSnaps has replaced their DK98 with a DK93 now and as of a couple of weeks ago, I would seriously look into this press... As for dies, I use the die that corresponds with the rivet I’m using... I have rivets with 6mm heads and 8mm heads. I also have press plates that I sell now that fit the Tandy/PacCana presses, the Kam DK93/Minkus Margo presses, and the GoldStar press.
Hi Debby, I appreciate this hack. Do you think it would work with a metal zipper? It is so scary to get to the end of the process and think that you could ruin the whole bag with one rivet. Thanks!
I suppose it is possible... You would be sewing through a lot of layers and your rings would be facing the centre of the bag instead of toward the outside.
Ok I'm going to ask what some might think is a stupid question for those of us that don't use rivets. Is it in any way possible to incorporate a d-ring into the zipper tab? Even if I were to try sewing in the extra d-ring tab my machine couldn't handle it. Any thoughts?
In this particular Clematis, I used a nylon, outwear fabric. It worked ok, but it was very hard to fuse the stabilizer to it because of the waterproof qualities of the nylon.
I’m not sure where you’re located... The punch can be purchased from Tandy Leather, I bought my rivet dies for my press from Tandy as well. I would look for a press locally as they are very heavy and shipping can get costly. I buy nearly all my hardware, including rivets, from Emmalinebags.com
Hi Debbie, thank you for an amazing tutorial!! I love the D-Ring hack and would like to know the size of zipper tape you use. I am ordering a rivet press and I understand that you are using the 9mm for this bag. I have cut several of these bags and will be doing them assembly line style and your video has helped me to understand the process better. BTW on your first video of the Clematis, you have your pattern taped together with a space in the center, is there a reason for that? Regards, and please keep the tutorials coming.
Hello Jean! Thank you for your kind comments! I use #5 zipper tape, and in this video, I used #5 plastic tooth zipper (as opposed to #5 coil). Because of the thickness of all the layers, yes, I used medium (9mm) rivets. I have small (8mm) and medium in my hardware stash. That little space in the pattern piece is just to make it easier to fold and store. It's the same size as the original pattern piece.
@@DebbyHunker you always seem to add so much flair to your bags especially by adding the #5 plastic tooth zipper, I'm finding it hard to find an 8" plastic tooth zipper though, did you cut the one you used to fit the bag and then add the zipper tabs? Did you sew the tabs over the zipper teeth to add the tabs ? Sorry for all the questions LOL
Debbie, thank you for your hacks. I am starting a business and would love to know your opinion on a reasonably priced commercial machine for straight stitching heavy fabrics. I am having trouble getting a nice stitch with either of my home machines. Also, if you wouldn’t mind, what source do you use for hardware? Thank you so much! Nancy

It does beautiful top stitching and that’s pretty much all I use it for. If you’re looking for a Juki TL2010Q, I have affiliates in the US, email me at debby@doodabug.ca if you would like any more info.
Hey Debbie, I’m actually hacking an old belt into the sides of a purse just like you did to fashion something to hold a strap, but I don’t have rivets... Could you suggest a way to attach something thick through so many layers without using rivets? Thanks a bunch!
If you can’t sew through the layers, and you don’t have rivets, the only other option that comes to mind is Chicago screws. They are similar to rivets, but they screw together...
Perfect timing on someone sharing this hack with us from a FB group! I was about to work on a process to do exactly this. Your idea has saved my sanity. :-) I have a question - how far did you leave from the end of your zipper tabs that were sewn on, to the edge of the raw fabric? I hope that makes sense. Hi Debby... what would you say is the better zipper for me to purchase for the clematis bag? I know nothing about purchasing them... this is all new to me. Type, length, width? Thanks
I prefer #5 zippers for handbags in general. They have a little more substance and don't look like dress zippers (#3). If you aren't going to use zipper tape (my preference), then 8" zippers work. The one I used in this video is #5 plastic tooth, but I use #5 coil zippers too. quick question, can I install them before sewing it closed? Have you tried it that way? I don't have the press yet and Having to hammer the rivets may not work so well once it's closed up.
