Deducing that the ball was the murder weapon was Sherlock levels of detective work. Who was stroking their chin, studying the scene and their eyes fell on the yoga ball? What was the thought process? "Hmm. Yoga ball is flat. Maybe it has...a...leak..."
Regarding carbon monoxide poisoning, when I was at uni I went out with my 3 flat mates for drinks one afternoon. I left them at about 5pm to see my girlfriend and didn’t get back to our flat until about 9pm. When I walked in 2 were passed out on our 2 sofas and one was sprawled out on the floor with their arms in a weirdly unnatural position. I couldn’t rouse any of them and totally panicked so immediate ran around and opened every window in the house. It was only while physically dragging one down the stairs to get him outside that he woke up. Turns out they had all just got really drunk and had super deep naps. Still, it scared me enough to go out and buy 2 CO monitors immediately (to go with the working one we already had next to our boiler).
Crazy CO story from when I was a teenager. We were trying to get a new heater through a program to help struggling families. A service man walked in the utility room and pulled out a CO tester and the minute he turned it on, several feet away from the furnace, it started screaming! "Ooooohhh, that explains why we've been so tired lately." Really, really bad CO leak- we were extremely lucky nobody was seriously injured!
In our old place, whenever our upstairs neighbours smoke alarm went off our carbon monoxide alarm would go off. I didn’t have internet when it first happened so I couldn’t google what carbon monoxide was or what to do, but I called 911 and brought my pets outside to wait with me then rushed to contact the people upstairs that the carbon monoxide alarm went off. The neighbour told me that it happens when their smoke alarm goes off and that they told my mom about it. I was so embarrassed when the firefighters came and I apologized for wasting their time, then they checked our apartment and there was no carbon monoxide.
Using a yoga ball to administer poison is honestly genius. 9 times out of 10 the cops won't even think someone would use that as a murder weapon. This guy just got unlucky.
My mind still boggles that the cops DID think of it. That officer who realized it should have their name in the record books. Maybe a frame picture and plaque on the wall in the station. "The murderer used this yoga ball!" - OFFICER NAME HERE - DATE HERE.
@_peters6221I wonder if the fact that there’s officially such a low murder rate means that when there is a suspected murder, the HK detectives aren’t “burnt out” at all. Or maybe they get excited to do some murder detective work and just go balls to the wall.
George's work shows him to be a true boots-on-the-ground journalist, a very artistic author (and is English his second language?), and an all around LEGEND.
How many of us love Simon's rambles about his kids? *raises hand> If nothing else, it provides a break from the horrible stuff these videos relate. It also shows a nice contrast with the unhealthy parenting so many experience and a happy, healthy family.
I know right? It’s also a little healing, I’ve listened to the channel for awhile and my dad recently died, and hearing Simon ramble about his kids reminds me of him. I swear his co workers knew my name better than his 😅
ABSOLUTELY. I started having kids 12yrs before my sister did, by the time she had her first I'd had 3 of my 4. I WILL NEVER forget when she would ring me to catch up (we lived 2000kms apart so only saw each other every 3 or 4yrs so the phone was our thing) she would ask me "so whatcha been up to" and I'd be like oh " Josh got his first tooth blah blah blah" and she once said to me "Courtney you realise no one actually gives a shit if your kid got a tooth so why do you bother even telling anyone" WELL WELL WELL About 8 or 9yrs after that comment when HER kid got his first tooth she actually rang me to tell me and put it ALL over FB, I then had a decision to make,1. I could be a total bi*ch like she was and tell her "no one cares" OR 2. I could be a supportive and KIND big sister and celebrate my sister's joy and the milestone of my nephew, I choose option number 2, because I didnt want to be so jaded and hateful at the world like she was to me, plus I actually cared. So Simon, tell away.....some of us really do want to hear about it.

George, if you’re reading, please consider doing a script on Cheung Kie-chung - he was an engineering professor at my university (HKU) who killed his wife in a student hall (where he was warden) and then wheeled the dead body in a suitcase to his office on campus. Apparently his wife was (allegedly) very volatile and abusive, and he snapped and strangled her to death. (Everyone at the university was talking about this case circa 2019)
This is the other one I was thinking of! There were two academic murderers in HK while I was there doing my own PhD (thankfully none at my university), and some of the commentary around both cases was...gross to say the least.
Once again, thanks for shedding light on victims who deserve to be remembered. It is always appreciated, George, when you share lesser known stories here in the West. All the script writers for CC are great, but George always has great stories that I haven't heard before.
The defense sounds like they’re trying to paint him as lovestruck fool desperate for a way out of a loveless relationship. He could have been free of the marriage if he just allowed a divorce. He could have had a wonderful marriage if he wasn’t so shallow. No sympathy for this monster.
I was wondering what happened! I never watched it when it first came out, but I was certain that I saw a notification about yoga and murders of some sort for the casual criminalist. I dismissed it and planned to watch it at work, but, when I got to work that night, there was no trace of the video. Glad I wasn't going crazy, it was just Simon removing/re-uploading a video!

As a Hong Kong resident, I never realized the location name ''Sha Tin'' is spelled the same as shat-ing until Simon started giggling over it. Now I can never unsee the joke :P On another more serious note, I'm sure George is already on the case of another gruelsome murder that rocked the entire HK city just a few months ago. Albeit the case is still in court at the moment, it's backstory, murder methods and great police work are exactly what CC viewers like to hear about. I'll just end on a note saying that the case involves a pot of soup and a family. May the victim R.I.P.
Honestly I appreciate the little glimpses of normality and loving families we get when Simon talks about his family, it's kinda comforting to be reminded that these cases are highly abnormal for families and that the norm is loving families.
Other TH-camrs: I have to be so careful. TH-cam might strike down on me for anything. "Unalived, that's good." Simon: I'm gonna risk it all every time.

Side note, but I’m watching news about a current trial, the Letecia Stauch case (killed her step son) and I keep thinking, she’s breaking *all* the Casual Criminalist rules, and even adding some we didn’t know about and breaking *them*! It might need to be a volume set!
I once called the police on what seemed like an oddly abandoned car. It was at the intersection of a residential street that had only just gotten a traffic light, and a main thoroughfare of the county. It was almost completely across the residential road to the point where you could just squeeze by it going the opposite direction. It also had its nose slickly down the embankment into a rather large ditch. All of this was pretty heavily wooded. There was no sign of anyone, except a slightly ajar door, and the car wasn’t running. It was just so bizarre. Never found out what it was actually about.
I don't have children if my own but I've been blessed with 4 amazing step children. I never referred to them as my step-children only my children and could never fathom doing anything like this to them it blows my mind the people are capable of doing this to their own children

For the record, severe carbon monoxide poisoning (as in what can happen in a vehicle or tiny space as opposed to a slow leak in a home or office) leads to seizures before it gets to the "coma and death" stage." I have been told that if someone survives CO poisoning (say, they're rescued during a suicide attempt) there can be some permanent lung damage and/or some brain damage. It's really awful and sad. Hence the tears in the courtroom when the details of the autopsies were reveled and the graphic descriptions of the effects of CO poisoning..
46:45 Actually Simon, sending pictures of your dead relatives is quite common in Asian culture. South Asian, n-north asian..? East, West, the whole 9 yards. It's because not everyone may be with them at the time of death but they still want the rest of the family to get one last look at them before they're completely gone. Even though they're already dead. I know I was really taken aback as well when my family called and facetimed my dead grandmother to show me. Being a Canadian, born and raised, I was very much like WHAT. THE. FUCK. This is so messed up and immoral but then my mom explained it all so, yea, fun fact for you fact boy.

Simon, exasperated: "Why does the one with all the money get to make the rules?? That's an insane system!" Simon, have you met the human species before? It's kind of a thing in our global society throughout all recorded history and generally doesn't change. I love your naïveté, man 😆😆
I love that Simon was a child about the hospital name as well. It lightened the dark read he had. And a thank you to George for writing this and putting so much into the victims instead of the killer. Thats why I watch this most true crime focus on the gore or the killer and not the importance of the victims.
I think the only time I've ever called the police on someone while not at work (I work at a bar, we have to call the police fairly often) was when I was just walking down the street and I saw someone parked in their car with the engine on but they were just slumped over the steering wheel. I was like "... there might be something wrong here." I'm not sure what happened to that person. I hope they were okay
I think the jury took 7 hours because they couldn’t decide whether he planned to kill his daughter too or whether she was an accidental victim. So basically whether he’s guilty of 2 murders or murder + manslaughter.
One MAJOR problem not addressed in this story is the methodology of the murder weapon.... A yoga ball is filled with poisonous gas. That gas has to come out to be effective. Once that gas starts releasing, there is a clock ticking and a finite time before it'll become useless. My question is, how and when was the leaking yoga ball placed in the car? This story seems to assume the ball was in the car and started leaking as soon as the occupants got into the car. Without a complicated timer mechanism (which was not found), surely the gas would have left the ball within minutes of being punctured which would mean the perpetrator placed the ball in the car moments before waving a cheery goodbye to the victims. This important detail was never addressed.
I love the fact that Simon said, “Just look it up on Google” and then later in the video is asking what legitimate uses there are for carbon monoxide in a lab setting.
As someone who came from Hong Kong used to live in Sha Tin.... I have honestly never thought of the name of the district to sound funny in English until now. Well, at least I am glad that Simon seems to be having fun every time he says the name!

Still, it scared me enough to go out and buy 2 CO monitors immediately (to go with the working one we already had next to our boiler).
thanks for raising awareness. I do have a carbon monoxide alarm
So nothing to do with CO poisoning then?
Or maybe they get excited to do some murder detective work and just go balls to the wall.
... Yeah he's also evil
Simon's delight at police competency is palpable.
Whoelse sees Simon's kids watching these videos years later and feeling totally embarrassed and happy how much their Dad talks about them?
George's work shows him to be a true boots-on-the-ground journalist, a very artistic author (and is English his second language?), and an all around LEGEND.
How many of us love Simon's rambles about his kids? *raises hand> If nothing else, it provides a break from the horrible stuff these videos relate. It also shows a nice contrast with the unhealthy parenting so many experience and a happy, healthy family.
I know right? It’s also a little healing, I’ve listened to the channel for awhile and my dad recently died, and hearing Simon ramble about his kids reminds me of him. I swear his co workers knew my name better than his 😅
🖐
ABSOLUTELY.
I started having kids 12yrs before my sister did, by the time she had her first I'd had 3 of my 4.
I WILL NEVER forget when she would ring me to catch up (we lived 2000kms apart so only saw each other every 3 or 4yrs so the phone was our thing) she would ask me "so whatcha been up to" and I'd be like oh " Josh got his first tooth blah blah blah" and she once said to me "Courtney you realise no one actually gives a shit if your kid got a tooth so why do you bother even telling anyone"
WELL WELL WELL
About 8 or 9yrs after that comment when HER kid got his first tooth she actually rang me to tell me and put it ALL over FB, I then had a decision to make,1.
@@faerierain7536 Sorry to hear about your Dad but I'm sure that you can see how proud he must of been of you to be telling everyone about you and your milestones all the time.

There boring and frustrating nwhen ypu just to hear the script
George, if you’re reading, please consider doing a script on Cheung Kie-chung - he was an engineering professor at my university (HKU) who killed his wife in a student hall (where he was warden) and then wheeled the dead body in a suitcase to his office on campus. Apparently his wife was (allegedly) very volatile and abusive, and he snapped and strangled her to death. (Everyone at the university was talking about this case circa 2019)
Jesus christ that's horrendous....so yes George please get on it lol
Up voting, if anyone can research the story it's our George.
This is the other one I was thinking of! There were two academic murderers in HK while I was there doing my own PhD (thankfully none at my university), and some of the commentary around both cases was...gross to say the least.
What's with HK academics and brutal murder
Interesting, I would like to hear about this too. My cousin studied at that university. Brings it all home.
Once again, thanks for shedding light on victims who deserve to be remembered. It is always appreciated, George, when you share lesser known stories here in the West. All the script writers for CC are great, but George always has great stories that I haven't heard before.
"Everyone knows drugs are great" is an all-timer quote.
If the CC Crew doesn’t like you comment I’d be shocked
No good story ever begins with "so we were eating a salad"
I'm gonna start using that as an answer every time someone asks me why I used to do drugs so much lol
The defense sounds like they’re trying to paint him as lovestruck fool desperate for a way out of a loveless relationship. He could have been free of the marriage if he just allowed a divorce. He could have had a wonderful marriage if he wasn’t so shallow. No sympathy for this monster.
Thank you for re-uploading. the ending being missing before was quite vexing. Much love to you guys.

I was wondering what happened! I never watched it when it first came out, but I was certain that I saw a notification about yoga and murders of some sort for the casual criminalist. As a Hong Kong resident, I never realized the location name ''Sha Tin'' is spelled the same as shat-ing until Simon started giggling over it. Now I can never unsee the joke :P
On another more serious note, I'm sure George is already on the case of another gruelsome murder that rocked the entire HK city just a few months ago.
"Unalived, that's good."
Simon: I'm gonna risk it all every time.
I think it helps that Simon has like 5 million channels he can get ad rev from.

So wholesome - like a little relaxation exercise - a little break from the horror of the casual criminalist episodes. Balances the world.
If Shara was also involved, Kim Sun doesn't seem like the type who would keep that to himself. Especially, if he could use the information to get a plea deal. On a somewhat related note, I would to know the writers's take on the Jeffrey MacDonald murders. He was a military doctor convicted of killing his family.
Isn't it terrible, that he planned to murder his significant other, murdered his daughter too by accident and didn't even care?

I think the only time I've ever called the police on someone while not at work (I work at a bar, we have to call the police fairly often) was when I was just walking down the street and I saw someone parked in their car with the engine on but they were just slumped over the steering wheel.
Simon we need your family stories to bring a little light into these terrible tales.
