He's good but not the best ever - there are players out there that over take him technically and musically; for reasons I can't quite think of, he just seems to have stayed in the spotlight for many years. Don't get me wrong; I'm a fan. But SRV for example was on another level, so was Hendrix.

Eric is an amazing person. I love his music, I was raised listening to Eric , and i also named my first born daughter Layla.My father looked up to Eric clapton... He said "Eric is my idol, he is the reason i play guitar and have love for music." When i was 13 my father had a band and when they would go do their gigs I would go with them ;half way through their show dad and I would sing "Promises". My father passed away in 2011 and the song that Eric sang "tears in heaven" is the same song i played at my fathers funeral services. Not even knowing why that song came to be until now. Every song Eric clapton has done is just fanominable . I love all of his music. Hes truly amazing.I am honored that i was raised listening to one of the best ! I love you Eric Clapton. Thank you for the beauty in your talent .
Now it's year end of 2017 and Eric is still a national treasure. This is such an interesting interview in that his personality really comes through and the interviewer does a fine job of pulling thoughts from him.
Eric has a great work ethic....you can learn this from his interviews and interviews with other support musicians. Love his journeyman period, especially....a very creative period.
ERic's support people are carefully chosen for their skills, work ethic and their loyalty, many of them over years, if you noticed. Andy Low, Nathan East, and others are good friends of his, and now his family with Melia.
The girl who interviews did a fantastic job, because it can be seen that she naturally improvises the questions and knows what she is doing...between the 2, they got a very entertaining thing
Hege Duckert, is her name. She's one of the better ones we've had in Norway. Proper old school approach. I have to say, though, that there are few, if any music journalists left in this country of that calibre. They're either dead, have retired, or having been pushed out of work, it seems... Especially in television. The NRK have had some really shitty music journalists in later years where you cringe with every second sentence that comes out of their mouth. They're more concerned with being trendy and hip or whatever... Bloody nonsense! Now, they don't even do a music magazine program anymore. Maybe just as well...

from my understanding after midnite was written this way..slower more soul....but he was making records...the powers that be,,,, needed that song played faster ....the rest is history...me in a band wanted to play after midnite slowed down and more bluesy....I couldn't slow the drummer down...... poop..;(

Very nice interview, thank you for posting it. My favourite period of his career. I read his autobiography recently, he is SO honest and sincere in it, it made me cry. I always loved his music, and I deeply respect him.
Come to think of it EC is a survivor. He focalizes all the influences from musicians that he listened to or played with and survived to: Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Big Bill Bronzy, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Freddie King, JJ Cale, Hendrix, Prince, Greg Philliganes, Steve Ray Vaughan. Lots of talent, a very trained ear, hard work, charisma and quite a bit of luck, being in the right place at the right moment. Also a strong will to live despite his own personal tragedies and getting over his troubled period of booze and drugs . That's what one could call a legend...
Look up Clapton No Bad Blues from ‘85. That’s a live bootleg and he cut everybody with Sheriff and Double Trouble. And then check Sheriff from Crossroads in ‘04. He had a 20 year run that was pretty unreal.

In his experience there wasn't enough choice in thier music.... it wasn't diverse enough in being able to develope what he did much later. Alot of other bands that stuck together were more diverse.... Stones, Allman brothers, Yes, CSN&Y..

No, the Who were still a Band who relied upon their pop hits to tour but Cream pretty well didn't have hits for the first 18 months in the US but they still managed to fill 5,000 seater gigs from word of mouth, no hits and only a low charting first Album, Fresh Cream, it was their music that attracted the crowd, big music, not pop songs.
Jeff Cripps well, I wouldn’t call My Generation, Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere and others Popsongs..those were the heaviest records available.. recorded in 65!! Cream did a lot Pop too, starting with Wrapping Paper..and Fresh Cream isn’t really a good Album..Disreali Gears and Clapton’s Status did it for them, although they didn’t play Monterey Pop in 67, cause Robert Stigwood thought they weren’t big enough to play there.. With The Who they did the Murray the K Pop Show in New York.. No doubt that Cream was one of the hottest Bands live in 67..in 68 they started to hate each other and the music showed.. a lot of egos and too long jams.. Clapton hated it later on.. so there are a lot of myths surrounding Cream, while the career was really short...

Good interview. But this was Eric's music at its worst. The 80s really was a bad period for music, everything sounded so superficially cheerful and it's now pretty universally rejected, even by the artists who made it, and seen as disposable music. Paradoxically, it was also the time when the record companies were for the first ever time spending serious money for artists. So putting two and two together, you can assume that the artists were delivering what the record company was asking for?
Trevor, wanna hear something weird? Sometime early 90s I was listening to the radio, working from home. Had two tape decks running (there were lots of varied music channels back then, so I kept tapes to hit when something cool came on) -- One tape is running, recording rock. The other is on a classical music channel. On that one I'm hearing what I think is modern classical, nice timpani (drums) with about 8 pure blues bars in the center, and got so caught up in the sound I forgot to hit the tape! Then the announcer comes on. " ...and this is an Early Music piece written in 1640 by Bulgarian composer (didn't catch the name). I'm, like, what?? Feeling like Twilight Zone! But, of course, it couldn't be. There was no influence then of either African or American sounds that would be accepted in Europe, even if it floated around. I'd give anything to know the name of the piece and who wrote it! Anybody? LOL
Yeah but less is more, less shit, more good stuff; i don't buy into it when people say the 60s weren't great, okay i was born in 91 so what do i know?. There's too much happening now and nothing really worthwhile, not a lot, i hate to sound pessimistic but that's what happens when your optimism is constantly crushed: movies are crap, art is extremely pretentious, music is dead, peoples attitudes stink, too much technology, too many people staring at their phones walking down the road. It depends where you were and your circumstances, the so called 60s only really took place in Europe and America and some other countries; i doubt Iceland was happening during the 60s. Eric Clapton had a hard time growing up so i suppose that's why he says that. I don't believe that.
@Joel Smith Yeah, i don't really mind him though, i only know like one or two of his songs, but he's okay, he's not a phony; hip hop was very good music back in the day, some very good tracks came out in the 80s. Its just most music today isn't good, if you want to hear good music you have to visit as many bars as you can. I go to a spot in Donegal and it stays open late, like half 4 in the morning, and there's a different band there every time. Good music i would say is still around, but its gone very underground, so its hard to know if it is still, in fact, around. I would pretty much need therapy after listening to chart music.
@@irishelk3 yes music has gone underground good stuff has gone Underground I come from the 70s and I remember the music in the seventies in the 80s and it was amazing stuff that you just don't have today and it died in the nineties sadly but I think that there are still good musicians out there they are just going underground because the cultural interest in music today is so focused on manufactured artist and mainstream garbage that they couldn't process anything truly good and talented.
