Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 USM 'L' 'ii' lens review with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)

  • Since 2008, this has been Canon's top-of-the-line, fast 24mm lens, and a lot of professional photographers swear by it (especially wedding photographers). Does it resolve enough sharpness for a modern APS-C camera though, as well as full-frame? And can it still compete with newer 24mm lenses from Sigma and Samyang?

    24 II is like transition period lens. Then there was no rule that lenses should be sharp from edge to edge, but it's not really bad on practice like some older lenses, or like Nikon screw-driving lenses. I believe that the update for this objective is coming, but it will be a great offer on the used market. It's still can do beautiful center composition portraits, and beautiful landscapes on 5.6-11 and it has weather sealing, and it lighter than modern fast aperture lenses.

    YES there is a reason to buy Canon rather than Sigma. The autofocus is terrible in Sigma. Yes, I know, there is Sigma dock, but in order to use it properly you have to be a photography-professor or something. :) I went to Canon EF 24 mm, not Sigma and I'm happy to spend two times more compared to sigma 'cos my photos are in focus every god damn time.

    Hi, Christopher. I like very much your video reviews about the lenses and think you're the best! So, please, help me in my issue: recently I've bought Canon EOS 7D Mark II body and need the appropriate lens to make my video blog footages dedicated to video recipes and photos of the dishes I do. So, I need a very good quality lens with good sharpness, smooth and fast focus, able to make video recipes and interviews, trips and a little bit with macro abilities. As I know, in Canon lenses, L series' lenses have good quality, but which one could be best for my camera and needs?
    I would be very thankful in case you could help me with your professional advice, Thank you very much beforehand, Meri

    Please do a review of the new Sigma 24-70mm Art lens! I recently purchased on but found it horribly soft, even after doing the micro adjustments with the USB dock. I've now returned it, but want to see if maybe I just had a dud copy!? There aren't really any video reviews in depth for this lens, and I need to see if it's worth me getting another copy. Thanks

    Thank you for the review Christopher! Can you dive a bit deeper on the corner sharpness? Does the AF work well on surrounding focus points far from the center (on f/1.4)? For example, the portrait of the blonde woman at 5:31, were you able to get that shot right away on AF, or did you have to try a couple times and/or use manual live focus? I often shoot moving subjects using AF and their eyes are almost always far from the center of the frame, so this feature would really be the game changer on whether or not I purchase this lens. Thank you!

    Tnx Chris for this video, I'm in the market for a fast wide prime (in the 20-24-35 range) with fast and accurate AF for stills to use during (poorly illuminated) indoor events (in relatively 'confined' spaces) on a Canon 7DII. IS could be a benefit but lacking it is not a deal breaker either, as I will be shooting high speed, high fps anyway. Anything to advise ? I reckon Canon would give the best AF speed n accuracy; so I should be looking among its range but given your rich experience I thought it wouldn't harm asking for your lights. I have the Canon 16-35 f/4 IS and the Tamron 45 f/1.8 IS. Happy with both of their IQ, and AF ability in the aforementioned scenarios but I'm looking to go faster than f/1.8 if possible (without harm of AF s&a) and wider than 45mm. Tnx in advance, all the best.

      If you mostly are shooting landscapes, and you closo to f8 f11, pretty much the 24-105 would do the job, if you buy a 1.4 lens it's for taking advantage of that wide aperture

      Tnx Chris, I've been researching further about your Sigma 20mm f1.4/ recommendation and some reviewers (cf. fstoppers.com/originals/sigma-20mm-f14-art-special-astronomy-review-104169) suggest that its comma is so bad that you have to shoot stars at f/4 which of course defeats the purpose of buying this lens in the first place. At what f/ have you been shooting the stars with the 20mm? And has the comma, etc. been good?

  • @StylusDrop
    @StylusDrop 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chris, in this and every other Canon lens review of yours I have watched, the performance of the lens on your APS-C mirrorless camera is significantly worse than on your EOS 6D. This should not be happening. If anything, the images on APS-C should be SHARPER in the corners than on full frame! I was wondering if there would be any possibility of you testing this lens (and re-testing some others) on a APS-C DSLR like a EOS 80D because the adapter may be somehow resulting in worse performance on the mirrorless body?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope - that's not the issue. Adaptors which are just air do not affect optical performance, and it's normal for most lenses to be less sharp on an APS-C. The pixels on a 24mp APS-C camera are far, far tinier than those on a 20mp full frame camera, which places a far greater demand on the optics of the lens, even if it's the middle of the lens you're working with.

    • @StylusDrop
      @StylusDrop 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I agree that an adapter containing just air should not affect the optical performance, something clearly is! It is true that the photosites are smaller on a 24MP APS-C sensor but I do not think that explains the effect we are seeing. If you can perhaps borrow, hire or buy a EOS 70D or EOS 80D then I for one would be very interested to see the comparison. I would do this myself but I am primarily a Nikon and Fuji shooter and use Canon EOS for film only :)

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The adaptor really isn't affecting anything. You can 100% trust me on that. The only time an adaptor causes issues is if it's misaligned somehow, and even then you'd only notice any effect if you were using an ultra wide angle lens. I've already tested that in my own time, by attaching a Canon 10-18mm lens on both my EOS M3 (with adaptor) and my mother-in-law's digital SLR - and there was no difference in image quality. You can absolutely, 100% trust me - the adaptor is not causing a difference in image quality. The difference is that the photosites are absolutely tiny on a 24mp APS-C sensor compared to full-frame, and that's why the performance of the lens looks worse - it's far more demanding on a lens's optics, in a way that's unpredictable - and that's why I test lenses on both full-frame and APS-C.

      A 24 f/1.4 on APSC gives you results that are almost identical to a 35 f/2 on FF with an ISO stop lower than what you would use on FF. Not a bad option for a fast all purpose lens, although this setup would be a bit heavier. It'd be nice if Sigma made more 1.4 Art APSC primes, Fujis fast primes are super tempting.

      Sigma made a 24 f/1.4 ART lens quite awhile ago. Although it's a FF lens it is quite affordable. You can consider checking it out.

      +Daniel Hawryluk an f/2.8 stopped down to f/4 will be very sharp as well. I think that the manufacturers just wanna sell you expensive shit. You don't need a wide aperture on a wide angle.
