B.J. Wilson: drummer extraordinaire for Procol Harum

  • Mr. Wilson is laid to rest in Corvallis, Oregon. I stopped by on a warm August day. Absolutely by luck, I was moving my vinyl collection back to Seattle, and happened to have all my Procol disks. I picked Broken Barricades to play, because it's about catastrophic loss, and because B.J.'s drumming is beyond compare. Yes, the album cover is not from that album, but it has such a great gatefold photo of the band, including B.J. I chose to keep the soundtrack just what came out of my little cellphone, mixed with the breeze, the sprinklers, and the barking dog, to offer a sense of place.

    B. J. Wilson was able to illustrate any composition with his drumming. He was an outstanding originator. Not only with Procol Harum - he also "illustrated" Joe Cocker's version of the BEATLES' "With a little help from my friends", and many other rock songs. He died damn early. But his inheritance is simply just GRAND! Thank you, Barrie - rest in peace!

B.J. also played on a few songs on the Lou Reed album Berlin. I bought that album just to hear B.J. play on those songs.

I had never thought of his drumming in that way, but you are spot on - as exotic as his work was there is absolutely an elegance to it, as it should befitting Procol Harum. Inventive, agile, technically profound, and, now, elegant. Well spotted. Cheers!

Procol Harum was always my No.1 band, because they were true originators; a band like pearls on a chain - brilliant.
Keith's words are unfolding stories, and they inspired Gary a lot, I guess, to write this wonderful strong and amazing music.
Robin sang with the earthy voice of his guitar, and Matthew played a mesmerizing, sometimes haunting organ that couldn't have been any better.
And then there was this drummer - Barrie J. Wilson - who played his drums like no-one else I know. He seemed to have the true understanding
of the sophisticated tunes, and he was able to give each number an own original drumming that seemed to complete it; to lift it out of the rest.
Watch B. J. playing to the slow, dark ballad "A Salty Dog" and you get what I mean: what can a drummer do for such a slow dark tune?
Well, Barrie could do a lot - and he did. His playing is alway still overwhelming me after all these years. I really miss him.

Totally agree! The best: operatic, symphonic, musical drummer of all, instead of just pounding away like Bonham who gets most of the kudos. Jimmy Page tried to recruit BJ for Led Zep but BJ chose to stay with an artistically beautiful band and Jimmy settled for Bonham.

When Procol Harum came to México City to play at Auditorio Nacional two concerts, after the release of PROCOL's 9Th LP, the lyricist of the band was very upset with me as a journalist for following them just to cha, and suddenly he got angry an shout in rage at me in public. Gary and the others didn't say a word and left but only BJ Wilson remained in the restaurante and he tried to confort me friendly with his nice attitude and then I could show him some of my city, in brief BJ made me feel like if we were good old pals talking and walking in the streets of down town, so I'll never forget that we got along very well. I admire his drumming and human kindness with all my heart. God bless him.

I had a front row seat at the Stanley Theater for a Procol Harum show in 1970. I left the show thinking that it was the first time in my life I'd ever heard drums. B.J. It is bizarre that he is not lauded amongst the best!!! I don't get it other than PH was usually underrated even though they rivaled the Beatles in creativity so maybe BJ suffered from that. Unfortunately Wilson had 'suffered catastrophic damage which was never going to right itself'.[7] He died of pneumonia in Eugene, Oregon, USA at the age of 43,[1] leaving a wife, Susan and two daughters, Sarah and Nicola"
The bottom of the gravestone says "To know you was to love you."

@@bobsmith6543 Pathetic that in death B J Wilson's legacy is mired in the same obscurity (if that's the right word) as he was in life. Amongst drummers he was a known commodity of course, but when drummers are known more for the generation of jokes about them and their craft, well, that's not much. Procol Harum's identity was/is constructed from many different musical components, Wilson's drumming as relevant as any of the others. He was incredibly strong (his left hand still blows me away), possessed a melodic sense that was structured around movement rather than the beat, and had a grasp of syncopation that was positively Brufordian.
