    Great find on this video for me. Just got my Axiom Iconic 8...so I ordered the upgraded gantry for my Shark HD and your close-ups have helped me a great deal for the upcoming "rebuild" I'll be doing to regain square and rigidity in the shark. I had also planned on making Axiom style spoil boards as you did...great job on those. Godspeed!

    My HD520 is just barely off as well on the X axis. I will do just as you did, confirm the gantry is perfectly square and then once that is confirmed ensure the spindle mount is square. It's off so little that I hesitate to even mess with it, but I have had a few minor issues that are likely caused by that slight variance.

    • @ChristcrossCrafts

      Getting the spindle dialed in can be a pain but it can also remedy other issues and eliminate the spindle from being the cause of others. A tramming jig is the best tool.

    Great Video, super helpful, Thank you! What size did you make you bench top? And if you were going to do it again would you make it the same size or change it and why? Thank you again!

    • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't fully recall what size I ended up with (I upgraded to a larger machine), but I believe I made it about 2-3" wider on the sides and left about 6 on each end. This gave me room to make a holder for the pendant and a sort of "shelf" to place clamps and bit while prepping and staging cuts.
      I liked the Kreg stand, but if I were to do it again, I'd likely build a cabinet with shelves and/or drawers and doors to keep dust out. Even though the stand was adjustable, once you add the CNC and casters, it was a little tall for my liking.
      As for the machine, my needs changed and 1/2" shank bits needed to be used. If Next Wave would have offered a spindle with 1/2" shank capabilities, I would have bought that and stayed with the Shark.

    I see when you installed the gantry you used the top 3 bolt holes. But further into the video I saw the top and bottom hole empty and you used the 3 center holes? Why did you do this and why not used the the bottom hole and work your way up? I just purchased a Shark 520 HD extended bed and will be putting it together tomorrow and help would be appreciated. Technical support said us the top three but gave no reason why there are 2 lower hole??

    • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The other holes are so you can raise it up to accommodate a thicker table, taller parts, and just to give more room between gantry and table.
      I did leave the top hole open due to me adding a spoilboard. This gave me just a little more clearance. I wouldn't leave more than one open at the top.

    Nice machine. I am looking at one of these or the infinity one cncs . I really want to have a 50x50 travel machine to handle full 48x96 sheets of wood. • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not bad. There is some deflection in the bed along "Y" but expected some with a thin table. I've since upgraded to an Axiom Elite AR8. Much thicker table, 3hp spindle, and built solid. I did a video on why I upgraded on my page. Much more $ though.,, but worth it.

  • @BillNicholsTV
    @BillNicholsTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this video I am looking at the 520 as well - how is the vertical stiffness on it? It seems when I went into Rockler that it has some flex to it with minimal effort - has that been an issue at all?

    • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will have some flex due to the HDPE gantry supports. For the $ its a good option. A similar price point would be the Axiom Iconic. They offer a stand.
      If you check out a couplenother of my videos, I actually upgraded to the axiom ar8 pro. In the video I explain why in more detail, which may help in your decision making.

      @@ChristcrossCrafts the Axiom is the other I am thinking of - only issue is I don't have 240V available and I want to have a water cooled spindle vs router. • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BillNicholsTV The spindle won't fit the axiom. The Iconic is a pretty solid machine (at 115 v) that comes equipped with an air-cooled spindle. I would prefer that over the hose and bucket required with the Shark spindle. They are about the same hp and limited to 1/4" and 1/8" collets so very comparable.

    • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought a LED light strip and ran it with the router cord. On my Axiom I found a better solution that would also work with the Shark. I bought a Halo led light that had a slightly larger inside diameter than my router/spindle (90mm). That is much cleaner. You can find them easily on Amazon.
      It will work with the Kent system.
      You will need to confirm the power options or locate a converter to 12/24v. My Axiom has that wiring already ran for their LED kit. I just wired into it.

I used small oval nuts in the tracks and truss head machine screws countersunk 1/2" and long enough to go through the countersink and into the nut in the track. I also added t-nuts under some of the strips.
      Had I redone that, I would have made my mdf strips wider where the center would be over a t-track. That would eliminate the need to offset the screws and for the t-nuts.

      I used the 28" & 60" rails. I made my plywood top overhang a little more on the sides than front to back. If you are short (like me - 5' 6") you may find the casters raise it up a little higher than is desirable but it still works well.

    • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't remember the exact width. I spanned them about 1/8" shy of the T-slot on each side. I believe it was 2-1/2". I made them all the same and used a Sketchup drawing to keep me right. If you leave your email or go follow me on Facebook and leave me a message, I can send you the layout of each strip.
      I basically spanned the joints of the aluminum strips and used the t-slot on each side as my mounting locations. I alternated left and right along the MDF strip (this layout is on the diagram I'll send).
      I also added some holes in the middle for T-nuts from the backside. I used a threaded rod as hold-down posts. I would not use those. If you do, don't thread the bolt all the way in, as it will want to push the spoilboard up as it tensions against the aluminum.

      One latch broken shouldn't cause any issues. They have a clip end that is best popped off using a flat head screwdriver.
      I actually called Nex Wave about this and requested two additional screws to aid in supporting the track to the table. I lifted the tab to gain better vantage point then used a small phillips through one of the holes. It was a little tricky since I have fat fingers, but popping the tab on the track helped.
      As for the cables... I ran my router wire off the other side. My cable wasn't long enought to safely pas it through the channel. If you have the spindle, then I'm not sure the hoses will go either. It's really only made for the stepper cables.
