Good review, Joe. You highlighted some points that often go unnoticed. Some comments below. Full disclosure, I've owned two Sorentos, a 2012 version and now a 2018 model. Each a fully loaded SX-L. Our Sorento is my wife's daily driver and the family's (2 adults, a teenage daughter and a big dog) extended trip vehicle. When we traded the 2012 model for the 2018 version it was one of the only times I've ever replaced a car with an identical later model. And if I were shopping today I think I'd opt for another Sorento. In short, I've been VERY satisfied with the Sorentos I've owned.
() When I first heard that KIA had replaced the 3.3L NA V6 with the new 2.5L turbo 4 I was skeptical about its durability. I'm actually a fan of smaller displacement turbo engines. I've owned Saabs and GTIs and loved them. But in a 2 ton plus SUV I thought a less stressed naturally aspirated V6 was a better choice for a vehicle I expected to own for 6 years or more . It was one of the reasons we chose the Sorento V6 over the Mazda CX-9 and Subaru Ascent.
In view of the fact that KIA offers a 10 year/100K miles drivetrain warranty and that the same turbo 4 is offered in the Hyundai Santa Fe and Sonata N-Line, the KIA K5, and most importantly the Genesis GV70, GV80, and G80, I've changed my mind. I don't think the Korean brands would put the engine in so many models if they weren't relatively certain about its durability. (Automakers don't offer long warranties unless they believe they'll have to redeem them very often.) Add to all that the fact that the engine/drivetrain offers better performance and fuel economy than the V6 I have in my Sorento and I think it's a major plus.
One caveat though. I suspect that combining the turbo 4 with AWD is highly desirable if not essential. There's simply too much torque (311 ft lbs) for the FWD version and leads to noticeable torque steer if a driver takes advantage of it.
() Joe, you mentioned that the previous generation was criticized for looking too much like a minivan. KIA obviously heard those criticisms and responded with a more rectangular overall design and what appears to be a somewhat longer distance from the front bumper to the "A" pillar at the base of the windshield. I don't have the exact specs but sitting in my Sorento and the new model back to back the new model certainly appears to have a longer hood. That's undoubtedly partly to improve the Sorento's looks and it may also reflect a need to increase the size of the engine bay to accommodate the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions that are on the way. In any event the new Sorento looks longer and considerably more SUV-ish than the last generation despite the fact that the overall length (189") has not been changed.
() KIA claims that the interior space has been increased for 2021. Technically, that's arguable true by some measures but it's complicated. Total legroom in the three rows has actually been reduced from 115.2" to 112.7". That's mainly because the front seat legroom has dropped from a whopping 44.1" to 41.4", identical to the Telluride and likely due in part to the longer hood. Unless a driver plays in the NBA (and probably drives an Escalade, anyway) the loss is likely to go unnoticed. The legroom in the third row has also dropped from 31.7" to 29.6". But that's balanced by an increase in second row legroom from 39.4" to 41.7", a fraction of an inch more than the first row. If the 2nd row is moved forward slightly to provide the same legroom as the last generation, the 3rd row legroom will match the previous model, as well. Furthermore, the 3rd row now has a recline feature that the earlier model lacked. That reduces the "knees in the air" feeling common in most midsized crossovers' 3rd row. All in all, the effective room in the third row hasn't been changed significantly and with the reclining feature it's probably a bit more comfortable for average size adults.
Total cargo room with the 2nd and 3rd rows folded has been increased slightly going from 73 cubic feet to 75.5 cf. That's probably the result of a slight increase in the Sorento's wheelbase (110.8" vs 109.4"). It's mainly noticeable in the still small cargo space behind the 3rd row that grows from 11.3 cubic ft to 12.6 cf. That's enough of an increase to add a small carryon or a grocery bag but nothing more. At 189" in length, half a foot less than a Highlander for example, the Sorento remains a 6 or 7 passenger vehicle for local outings OR a road trip vehicle for 4-5 passengers with their luggage and gear. Not both. But that's true of all but the largest midsize SUV's wrapped in a smaller more maneuverable package.
() With the new 2021 models' new engine choices and other changes, it's not surprising to see KIA adopt some cost cutting compared to the previous model to avoid significant increases in MSRPs. Most are likely to go unnoticed. Four way lumbar support in the driver's seat in my 2018 model has been reduced to a two way version. Extending thigh support for the driver is gone. I'd miss that on long trips and my wife would definitely complain but it's a feature that most other mainstream crossovers don't offer. The leather quality in the highest trim is no longer "nappa" quality but it's not noticeably inferior. Some will find the absence of a bench seat option in the highest trims (just as it is in the Telluride) but it's not surprising. KIA traditionally limits options in their most expensive models to contain production costs (and therefore MSRPs) and market research indicates that customers who opt for the highest trim levels typically prefer captain chairs in the second row as a sign of "luxury."
On the other hand there's one deletion from the previous generation that's likely to cause be a major issue for potential buyers: the absence of driver seat memory for two drivers! It wouldn't be surprising to see it absent in a sports car or even in a "hot" hatch like my GTI. But in a "family" SUV where multiple drivers are common it's a big deal. When I mentioned it to my dealer several days ago he literally looked at the floor when he admitted it was a missing feature. And considering it remains in the new version of the nearly identical Hyundai Santa Fe it's going to be a continuing source of annoyance to customers and dealers. Kia made a mistake in eliminating it.
() All in all, the new generation Sorento represents a major upgrade. It's not the game changer the Telluride has been and it won't outsell its most obvious non-Korean competitor, the Toyota Highlander. But anyone who isn't already committed to a Toyota should take a close look. And for those committed to a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid that goes double. As for the Santa Fe, if a buyer believes they have no use whatsoever for a third row and prefers its styling almost all of the Sorento's features are available in that vehicle.

@@rogermorrison6524 JD Power, KBB and all the rest are bs. A few years ago they gave the highest ratings to brands like Fiat and now Fiat is on life support in the US. KIA is okay overall, but I think what most consumers want to know is long term reliability, not “predicted” reliability nonsense. People are keeping their vehicles longer than ever right now and loans are stretching out so nobody wants to get stuck with a $400 payment and a repair that isn’t covered under warranty. This goes for any brand. I’d say the best source is word of mouth, ask someone who owns a certain model or who’s had it in the past. Consumers are the honest source unless they’re trying to dump it off on someone else.

Not so much value anymore. They're both now as expensive or more expensive than Honda and Nissan, but still less than Toyota, Ford, Chevy and VW. MSRPs anyway. Honda/Acura has regained the dubious title of value king. Kia/Hyundai/Genesis do offer more tech and desired features though and standard too, including safety. Oh and styling (at least Kia and Genesis)...

Fantastic review! New Sorrento is looking super sharp and I like it a little more muscular than its predecessor. Do not like mini vans at all. Im an Suv type Mom. I see a bit of Volvo and a tad of Land rover but not the price tag of each, which I totally appreciate! Enjoy your channel and consistent detailed content of new cars. Adding this Sorrento to my list of Suv choices! Telluride is still my #1 choice but will test ride them both and see which just feels better. Great job by video person! Saves me time at the dealership! I feel pressured looking at a dealership with sales guy. This saves all that and answers pretty much all my questions. Great job!

Sorento EX / SX PRESTIGE has a Smart Power Liftgate. But, next to the Smart Power Liftgate button on the liftgate. There is a lock button. So, When you get all your twinkie boxes out of the back. You don't want to get the remote out of your pocket to lock your Sorento. Just push this lock button. The liftgate will close and all 4 doors and liftgate will lock.
