2) Apple puts dual-core CPUs in all but their most expensive laptops.
3) Apple has almost no dedicated graphics and even when it does, they're equivalent or inferior to last-generation hardware.
4) Apple's Butterfly keyboard is TERRIBLE.
4a) Apple Care doesn't cover keyboard trauma because fuck the customer.
4b) The keyboard has almost zero travel, making it very difficult to determine if you're pressing down the fucking key or not.
4c) The keyboard is fragile as shit.
5) You can't plug in a USB mouse without bullshit adapters.
6) You can't plug in ANYTHING while a standard MacBook is charging without bullshit adapters.
7) You can't plug in a MicroSD card without bullshit adapters.
8) There is no ability to swap hard drives or SSDs.

9) You can't add RAM as Apple has "courageously" soldered all of the RAM ports.
10) Even the Core m3 processors in MacBooks are only clocked to an anemic 1.2 gigahertz.
11) The laptops are self-destructive and will wear out in two years.
12) The trackpad is too large and can accidentally be brushed with your palm or fingers when typing.
12a) You can't turn off the trackpad.
13) You can't plug in an Ethernet cable without bullshit adapters.
14) The MacBook Pro 15" is $2300. It has a Core i7 and a Radeon R555X graphics card. For better gaming preformance, you could buy:

- Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming - 7th gen Core i7 and a NVIDIA GTX 1050 - $999

Yeah. Besides the track pad, which I might add I hardly ever use (wireless mouse)... The Surface Book 2 beats it in every category. The lack of a touchscreen and horrendous keyboard pushed me away from the MacBook and I bought the Surface Book.
If Surface book 2 was from Apple it would cost $5000+ and this guy would be praising apple for "innovation" without any complaints.

Prima agreed on servers front...but for personal use...never.. I've had enough share of problems with windows until i finally bought a macbook pro in 2011.. super smooth...,zero errors...no viruses on top of it....no annoying updates every 2nd day...all in all a much stable and polished OS...windows 10 still has elements of windows 7...say of example the settings app as well as control panel ..It just doesn't make sense anymore. By the way macOS isn't as closed as you think. In normal use , you'll find it 1000 times better than windows. Has more features than windows and has zero hiccups.

You like windows fair enough, i have been using windows all my life, but once you shift to macOS.... everything starts making sense...a polished OS, a refined experience, zero hiccups,no viruses, regular updates ( a new OS every year, thats apple), on top of it...the best after sales and service experience that one can get...
I'm looking so many videos about the book 2 and nobody is showing that if you flip and close the screen you can draw and sketch with Adobe Photoshop and illustrator with the Wacom pen... And is a key feature that MacBook can't do...something to review for sure, but is better to say that has just one usb-c....
Sure, that said it isn't directly comparable to a Wacom pen. They are improving though.
Problem is you are carrying around a heavy keyboard/gpu base you probably aren't using much. If you do want to use a keyboard and draw at the same time you will have to carry a second keyboard around. At that point it really doesn't seem that ergonomic.
Surface Pro with a Bluetooth keyboard is a better device for that, imo. Kickstand is the shit.
JayJapanB nope, the stand is perfect for the inclination for draw, I have the book 1 and it works very well. Depends from person to person but definitely you must show the possibility to use it like that. And usually you are carrying it as a notebook so it doesn't matter for the weight.
No, it does matter if you see it as an incentive. It weighs significantly more than a Surface Pro and has a pretty unusable keyboard.
Also, I'd disagree that it's the perfect inclination to draw. You can't use it in clamshell comfortably and clipboard mode restricts you to a near flat inclination.
It's not that it can't draw, and they should state that in reviews, but it is certainly not perfect and shouldn't be glossed over as "It's a Cintiq!" when it just isn't.
I'll hold out for improvements to the Surface Pro as I see much more potential in that as a dedicated drawing device.
The Surface Pro wins in regards of drawing. It's just way more comfy.
But for actual 3D work ( medical, looking and working with 3D sculptures etc ) i need the GPU and the small added weight isn't too bad.
The Surface Book after all is aimed at professionals and at work.

N-trig is way closer to wacom than it was a couple of years ago, and I call bs on the "drawing on the display isn't great", it's night and day difference vs an intuos...
Also a desktop + a cintiq is better imo, but with the surface book you get everything you would need in a self contained portable package.

You mean the keyboard base, not the keyboard. And by the way, the CPU is in the screen base, so that you can detach the screen and use the computer in tablet mode.

15 inch hard sell? Lol this has to be the first review I wholly disagree with you austin. Gtx 1060 and detachable screen with an additional pen for 200 dollars more. Plus a better keyboard and on par build and software experience could barely be a hard sell. The GPU in itself is enough of a decision. As long as it doesn't throttle this is a proper gaming laptop and having additional advantages on top of that, I don't see why people wouldn't buy this.
Apple fans man. the fact that he owns nvidia gtx 1080 tis and edits on mac is stupid. The best macs have an 1100mhz 2gb amd gpu for $5,500. Even if he uses that he's still doing it worse than he could on a pc for one sixth the price.

It's a hard sell because this laptop is not oriented at gamers. The 1060 GPU is super sweet though. I was considering switching to MS but only one USB-C port is not enough. I don't use old USB-A ports anymore, there are 4 on the MacBook Pro 15. Also, when it's closed, it's quite bulky with that hinge. If it didn't have the tablet gimmick and used a regular hinge, with more USB-C, I would switch. Currently using an iPhone X and Pixel 2 XL so I'm ready when the right laptop comes. But this Surface Book is the closest I've been to switching.
The hinge is required because so much of the internals are built into the monitor, unlike other laptops (which are horrendously thicker) If you had regular hinges the wires and whatever else that is required to connect the internals from the monitor wouldn't be possible. But either way with the hinge, compared to a gaming laptop, this still is way thinner than those. I've had surface book 1 since it's release and have loved it, and am planning to upgrade to the 2 this month, and I also have the iPhone X. Surprisingly though, most of my peripherals still use USB-A so it hasn't been an issue for me, but I don't generally use the USB ports for many things except video files for editing.

You should just change the name of this review to "Austin Evans Is Extremely Biased". "Well, the Macbook has better speakers, so it's a better computer..." Yeah, but the Surface is completely specked-out, and you are going to argue for the Macbook because the Surface isn't what you are used to. Where are those home-keys, though? The next time you get locked, I hope you remember this. I guess it is true that whenever anybody wastes their money on garbage, they have to justify it. When was the last time that the Macbook delivered any specs?

i think from what he is saying is that it isn't as big as the imacs, but like u stated it has a touch screen and u can use a pen on the screen and it also has that little circle like thing you can get that controls it and can be used interactively with the screen while drawing probably one of the coolest little things microsofts made in awile accessory wise

The whole point of the touchbar is to not touch the screen. It’s not very effective to move your hands from the keyboard if you wanna perform an action.
It's also incredibly ineffective to use a "touchbar" that isn't even supported by most apps.
Also I currently own the Surface book (1) and i can assure you the screen doesn't wobble lmao.

Ali Yasir i do respect your opinion but i guess you’d lose the bet. The Macbook has its purpose no doubt but if you want to be honest and realistic, the surface give all options even if you dont want them and has everything else you need so overall without any doubt it wins this comparison.
I really don't think I'd lose the bet, I've seen multiple reviews saying that in their use of the surface book, they never really use it as a tablet and keep it in laptop mode and I don't think touch screen laptops really took off in a way that would make this a deal breaking feature, when it comes down to it, the the MacBook Pro and the surface book 2 are incredible laptops, if you want a hybrid however, thats an entirely different thing

I like the internal hardware of the Surface Book 2, but I really hate the design. The trackpad was small and awkwardly placed. Keyboard is meh. Display was flimsy. The surface pen wasn’t too great. I honestly prefer the MacBook

The i7-8650U processor is very comparable to the i7-7700HQ as it houses nearly the same performance for much less TDP, which is battery saving, and its max frequency is 4.2Ghz whilst the i7-7700HQ's is 3.8Ghz. I would say that the 8650U is a much better processor for what it offers. And seriously, do you know what it takes to build such a 2-in-one? It's really expensive to make compared to the Macbook Pro. The display itself is probably half the price of a Macbook Pro 13! (I said probably)
Disagreed on the CPU and the display. For extensive workload like video rendering the U cpu will throttle. The display is comparable with the 15" MacBook Pro with the Surface being slightly more expensive because of the higher resolution.

Oh yeah, I'm not as lazy as they are). Oh yeah, Apple offers SSDs for really fucked up prices too, like 200$ for a bump from 128GB to 256GB? Yeah, Microsoft is "disgusting" for 256GBs more and 8GBs of more RAM, and Macbooks use LPDDR3 RAM, which is slower compared to the Surface Book 2's DDR4 RAM. 2. Okay... I messed up a bit and compared the 13" MBP to the 13.5" SB2. No biggy.
3. Nope, $400 dollars on the BP (with a little CPU and GPU upgrade. GPU is pointless to compare cause we know which one going is to outperform the other (Surface Book 2's 1060 of course)).

idk i feel if you're willing to spend 2400 dollars on a macbook, 2500 dollars for the surface book isn't that much of a hard sell. Even if you don't use all the touchscreen features and whatnot, it's still an amazing laptop. Also i would have loved to see an actual GPU benchmark. Apart from that, great video

Love Austin’s stuff - but this review seems awfully unbalanced. Reviewers have their own biases which is fine; we’re here to listen to their opinion. But this really felt disorganized and the final verdict disingenuous to the surface. The majority of the review had a lot of praise for the Surface (better battery , screen, and a kick ass GPU , pen etc) and then he just rounds it off saying it’s a hard sell and says Mac wins. The various pokes at the surface’s “weirdness” really were not negatives and are especially useful . But gives the viewer a negative impression of the surface. Moreover the surface pen and the surfaces studio mode was barely touched on and a huge selling point for creatives.
I much prefer MKBHD or Dave2D for balanced, sincere reviews. Each has their own biases but this one from Austin almost felt their was some subliminal nastiness towards the surface.

I don't know if I misunderstood this, but there are many gestures on the Surface Book 1 including 3-finger and 4-finger gestures for switching windows and desktops.

Frankly, the Mac is a hard sell. You get generally better software with windows, and it's less contentious to use, too. Even now, the majority of accessories use USB 3, USB-A, or USB-C. Having "Thunderbolt" Ports is just around useless. With items such as the Surface Pen, Surface Mouse, & the Camera on the Screen Portion, the Apple's counterparts are lesser products. Touch ID is something I've never gotten any use out of, and I despise keys with next to and/or no travel. But over all, the Surface Book 2 is just generally better than the MacBook Pro for one *huge* reason; YOU CAN'T GAME ON A MAC!

I was just thinking if I don't have other Apple products (I have android phone/tablet/ monitor from Dell that uses VGA to connect) thunderbolt is pretty fucking useless. Only thing I need in my current laptop is a USBA->USBC adaptor which are crazy cheap compared to apples equivalent.

When you say there is no bloatware, there IS no bloatware. The apps you see on the Start menu are not installed, and clicking on them takes you to the Microsoft Store to install them.
I use my kids touchscreen chromebook from time to time and it really sold me on having a touchscreen on a laptop. It is much easier to reach up and touch controls versus navigating over with a touchpad, even if the touchpad is great like on the Macs. The next laptop I get will definitely have a touchscreen. Fingerprints are only noticeable when the screen is off so they aren’t much of an issue.

Note that the CPU is behind the screen, while the 1060 is in the base, so if the tablet is disconnected from the base, you are limited to integrated CPU graphics
I'm guessing the unique hinge design was to stop the actual screen / tablet portion from squashing down on the keys.

Listen Windows 10 is actually pretty good and the surface line up is nothing but quality, learn to use different software and stop rewarding companies for "not" innovating.

Had a macbook pro for 7 years (exact same macbook) so apple makes amazing products. BUT I got the surface book and I use it for everything from gaming, digital art, tablet for movies, reading, notebook and general computer shit. It does not disappoint it's great and would easily recommend it especially for creative people.
for 100 more i get a gtx 1060 vs rx 460 on the macbook, a better screen, keyboard and a tablet? The surface book is the clear winner here.

Yeahh it may have higher DPI but that all is forgotten when you first turn it on and see all that blacklight bleed! IPS panels used in the Surface line are notorious for that. And too, at this price point it should include the pen!

People don't realise what Mac's are. They aren't more expensive and simpler windows, they are built completely different. For editing not much will even come close to Mac's, unless it costs more contradicting the point I made about price. Also when Austin says its better because he used it more he means shortcuts. You can fly around apples interface if you spend time on one.

When I am lying comfortably on my couch doing Photoshop work with my surface as a tablet with the pen I will remember your words of wisdom. Would be much better using the track pad and mouse pointer bolt upright at a table on an antiquated mac.

Pokemon Master i agree that touchscreens are stupid in laptop mode but not in tablet mode. For SB2s case it's reasonable since it's a 2 in 1. Tablet mode is really great for editing and illustrations, too, and I find that some tablets alone are pretty weak so a tablet with the power of a laptop is pretty great (especially this one with a gtx 1060). You could do editing and illustrations with the IPAD Pro for sure, but its not a laptop like this one is. If you already have a separate laptop, sure, go with the iPad pro. SB2 allows you to have both a tablet and a laptop in one product, so it's good for those in the market looking for both things, all in one. No hate on Mac or MS, I personally like both but for different things.
Can I just say that having the built in XBox controller receiver is really cool!
So Helios 300 is on the chart compared to a Surface Book 2 and MacBook Pro 15” but the price tag is significantly different. Helios 300 is $1100, 1200 if you want 2 TB memory. The fact that it can contend equally (and most times beat) with the MacBook Pro and SurfaceBook that are over twice it’s price is absolutely insane!

As a mac and windows user, I gotta say macOS with that touch pad is just the most smooth experience I have ever had. The surface book is really solid and worth the money. However, I've never seen surface book around very often.
Austin, look up the durability records on the Surface line. It's VERY important to your story. I can imagine you'll do a second video on this afterwards. Anyone should research this.

As a person who loves clamshell laptops, this is amazing.
Austin, ms have pre installed games on their pc even before windows xp like solitaire, pinball, Daytona USA, and so on. To knock on them for putting a few games (which you still need to install yourself to actually start playing) is quite ridiculous.

After having used Macs for years as a designer, the SB2 just makes more sense for creatives. Macs just don't compare for features and input, at this point. Why spend about the same and not have touch screen and pen input? Just being able to pinch and zoom on screen in photoshop keeps the creative process quicker and easier, as an example. Not to mention sketching onscreen and the use of the surface dial especially in studio mode. Apple, I'm sad to even say this, is now behind the curve.
