I put an Ivan's jet kit in my 1998 R1. I actually called Ivan and he told me to polish the needles with real fine wet and dry before installing them. I also replaced the needle jets in the carb bodies. WOW!!! What a difference the kit made.
I am doing the same for a 01 FZ1. So far one stuck mixture screw in a pre drilled welsh plug. Needles coming out are 2 kinds... Interesting work so far. I check back by time in your part 1 and 2 :D
@@DeWoodysShop My bike is now codename "Chop Shop"... Carbs from 03 in a 01 FZ. And my carbs never seen any love last 10 years, had to send it to "Toppham Mikuni" who did an awesome job drilling out dead screws and position the throttle plates back to spec. Finally it was time to Ivanise. Last weekend i put everything back in the bike, and it does what Ivan says. I did everything as told. Shorter springs, drilled bypasses, airbox lid mod. The best KIT on planet earth, by far !!
The next thing I would like to know is how to set the throttle cables on the FZ1. I have a 2001 FZ1 and pulled carbs out and forgot to measure/take a photo on the positioning.
really appreciate the video. to make a long story short I shattered my legs 12 years ago and after many surgeries I feel great and just retired. I poked my 2001 FZ1 8 years ago with stability in it, I know that a long time, I have Ivans kit in it and the bike was perfect !!! Do you have a video on that kind of procedure? As I watch this video you g all the way down to those main little tubes. do I do the same thing as you do on this video to make sure all the jets are clear. Love your work, blessings
@ILoveGlock1019 No, I'm still making them, I have a bunch of footage recorded just have not had much editing time with a new job and some family stuff I had to deal with over the last year that's finally wrapping up. So hopefully can start making videos again soon.
Man can you explain the exact way you put those shims on with the 3mm nylon spacer Does it go Shim, E-clip, shim, nylon spacer? Or Shim, E-clip, nylon spacer, shim? Please help lol
Ill see if i can find the original pdf but i honestly can't remember now. But i think its shim e clip, shim, nylon. But really the last two should not matter that much.
@@DeWoodysShop Sorry, I was watching your video and another guy doing his dash lights and commented on your by accident. Since you're here though, I want to say thanks for the series you did on the fz1. Amazing job!
5 turns out on the mixture screws is way too rich, it'll make the choke unusable due to being far too rich at idle... 3.5 turns out works better & choke is usable, plus I've found it's better to only drill out 1 bypass hole on each carb ... to get the best from the Ivans MB kit, you need to port the carb intake mounts with a dremel & cut away the airbox lid inner section with a dremel & fit a sports air filter like a Pipercross foam filter... also a good time to replace the O-rings in the float chambers, especially the O-rings under the float needle valve bodies as these rot big time & reset float heights to 14mm, motor responds well from this mod & pulls like a train from idle to rev limiter.
Sadly on the back burner. But, i have finished most of the paintwork now, and all the major new parts are in. I hope to start back on it this month. New Garage is almost finished just need to finish a few drywall spots.
@@DeWoodysShop I would love to see more videos, I just picked up an engine for an 05 fz1 and want to use it for a little cross kart, but I am having one heck of a time figuring out all the hoses and wiring. It all came to me in pieces and this is my first bike engine to work on.
It really depends how much you ride and gas quality. If you ride it a lot and have good gas, maybe never. If it sits for long periods or is not stored correctly possibly every spring. Bikes I don't know the history of I like to do soon as possible if its running rough or etc.
@@DeWoodysShop ok thanks so much, I'm going to check one out in a couple of hours and I want to be as prepared as possible. One last question, do you have to do valve jobs periodically or is it based on how it was ridden previously? Is there anyway to tell if it needs to be done?
@@davidstancu2963 yes and no. So by the manual they should be checked every 10k miles. However how the bike was ridden can greatly affect if any adjustment is needed. I have found bikes that were babied are often still fine at 20k miles when I do that check. Whereas a 600 that loved the redline can be well out even before 10k.
@@davidstancu2963 On a multi cylinder bike it's harder to tell, as I can be a few things. But hard starting can be a sure sign. What happens is, as the valve slam shut it stretches. Eventually it will stay slightly open, causing low compression, burnt valves, etc.
@@DeWoodysShop that's ridiculous a valve job after 10k miles LOL. Buying it from an older gentleman w 14k miles so I think it will be fine to 20k but well see. Thanks again for the info your help was tremendously appreciated.
I have JIS also but on these carbs the "standard" Wera PH2 were fitting best. The true JIS screwdrivers were too square ended compared to these screws.
Thanks! and will do, i had to put it on pause as it will be getting repainted also but its been too cold, but hopefully will be back on it soon. I will try to get some footage of that as well, just have to figure out how to keep paint and dust off the cameras.

At time marker 7:00 (needles) what is the black cylindrical thing called? Is it plastic? The mechanic told me that I need to change these for my bike.
Those are the vacuum slides. Should be easy to find for these
