Over seeded my front lawn with Perineal Ryegrass this fall and now my yard is a lush combination of clover and actual grass. (I actually like clover and it is a good source of nitrogen for the grass.) Before it was mostly clover and other weeds. Just cleaned up volcano pine needle mountains from around two big pines in my backyard. I mixed some good dirt with compost pine needle and cones and threw down some grass seed. I hope it fills in well on the bare dirt.
I have a question. I'm wanting to do a full reno on my front lawn. Well half of it first then the rest later. I know we are past the time to kill the grass and then plant seed, as we would be in November and it would be too cold. But should I kill the grass now (or before winter comes) then go ahead and plant the seed in the spring when temps get up higher? Would it be bad to kill grass before winter. I live in Nebraska so I am in a similar climate as you. Or could I wait until the snow melts in early spring, kill it then and the seed it? I would rather not wait until July to kill the grass and then seed. I'd like to get the grass growing in spring. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
HILARIOUS!!! Just became a SISSY Perennial Rye Grass Lover after my old lawn was scalped too low in Southern California. From October to February have overseeded upon overseeded. I'm a girl and the TALK of the neighborhood. 😊
No it won't do well in that climate. Bermuda would be my choice for that area and then you could maybe do ryegrass over top it in the winter. Maybe...I have never lived there so I can't say for sure.

PRG saved my ass during my recent lawn reno. It comes up quick and gives quick color. Def a lifesaver, especially for those with a HOA (thankfully I dont have one)
good video ryan! but to defend KBG, the spreading capabilities are simply amazing. that alone is why i decided to go with KBG over PRG. when dealing with poa you need every advantage you can get and applying a PRE-M religiously in the spring and fall is one of the best defenses. with PRG you will be reseeding to keep up and the root pruning impacts makes that a more difficult endeavor. not to mention kbg handles the heat better.....but establishing kbg is challenging to put it mildly, but once it is established it earns its reputation as the 'alpha of cool season grasses'. :)
