And it's very frustrating because I've been learning this language for years and when I forget words and search for what to say, I get angry at my stupid brain.
People called her a bad representation of Latinos and as a Latina, I firmly disagree. She takes up space without any regrets, her strong personality so never watered down for people, calls people out without any hesitation and is so warm to everyone and is always focused on her family. I love her.
As a Colombian, some of the jokes were wild and leaned a lot into the stereotypes of narco-culture or Colombia being dangerous in general, which is no longer the case. Aside from that, she is an icon!
Gloria could have easily been written as a shallow, vapid gold digger, but fortunately, she's a lot more nuanced. She genuinely loves Jay, is a devoted mum to Manny and Joe, and gets on well with Claire and Mitchell, being roughly the same age as them.
She is an amazing character. To be honest, her loving Jay is the only weird and unrealistic thing about her (not even because he is old and ugly, but because he is an annoying prick).
She couldn't be written as a gold digger because her character was from the start meant to parody the stereotype of younger attractive women in a marriage with an older man being seen as gold diggers... Actually, the big part of the show's focus was to parody stereotypes in general, in one way of the other...
Gloria is a breath of fresh air. I was surprised she wasn't the stereotypical shallow, mean gold digger. She loves Jay, gets along with her stepchildren and stepgrandchildren, and gives her all to Many and little Joe. Her character is one of the best written in the last 20 years.
If there is one thing I do want to say, that even the show does acknowledge which I like, is that if Gloria didn't look like Gloria, half of the stuff she does, she wouldn't get away with it. Gloria uses her looks to her advantage without making her hallow or cruel and I like that. Because if Gloria character was written again but with a less attractive woman in the role, she would be seen more as a villain than a great person
Yea that’s life. It’s nature. Then again a less-attractive woman probably wouldn’t have the confidence to do or say the things she did. Possible, but less likely.
@@fadethechannel how a less attractive woman would feel is irrelevant, because this argument creates a loop. A woman (or even man, depending on what's discussed) can be a lot less confident because they were taught that *for them* it's not acceptable to act that way.
This applies for Sofia Vergara in general. I don't think I have ever heard a cruel/ malicious word out of her mouth. And her looks? I was always so disappointed that Sofia Vergara didn't receive as many individual performance accolades as her costars. Her comedic timing and delivery is impeccable.
Women are often snubbed in all sorts of awards alas.... In the drama version of Emmys think of Game of Thrones (Modern Family has the most Emmy awards as a comedy show, GoT as a drama show, and they indeed both share great, complex characters and original writing, but I digress). Lena Headey as Cersei, 8 seasons of acting perfection, one of the rare villains you even feel sympathy for despite their numerous terrible deeds? No Emmy (instead she even got death threaths and no one wanted an autograph from her, people are dumb)... Michelle Fairley as Catelyn in probably the most intensely acted out scene I have ever seen on TV at least, the Red Wedding. Nothing... Actresses of Margaery (Natalie Dormer), Arya (Maisie Williams), Emilia Clarke (by S8 she was a phenomenal actress) as Daenerys, nothing either, Sansa, Brienne, Olenna as the most iconic guest star? Nothing.... And so on and on. The only actor who won an Emmy there was Peter Dinklage. Deserved, but he won like 3 or 4 times. I'd rather more actors and mainly actresses as this world was the first mainstream fantasy world with a lot of complex female characters from heroines to villains, but nah... And though I respect him in many ways, he got to the level of stardom through this role yet then says s*it like actors with dwarfism shouldn't play dwarves because it's something-phobic? Excuse me? Why did you film 8 seasons of being a "dwarf" (I know he is not but they called it that way there), a Narnia film as a literal dwarf etc? Countless actual actors with dwarfism felt really harmed by his statement as he is the most influential actor on the planet of this kind so he puts their careers, already at a disadvantage, at a bigger risk even. Some celebs do get full of themselves when they are too lauded. Maybe it's actually good often the best things don't win, at least the artists' egos don't then grow into enormous proportions like with Peter. Each one of the spouses who married into the family brought new ways to see life, but for me, Gloria was the biggest contrast. Even if she is an stereotype, she had good values and intentions, a kind heart. She showed everyone there's different approachs, and the emotional grow they had thru the seasons is just heartwarming. Such a well written character deserves this recognition.
Gloria is the wife, mother, stepmother or friend you wish you had or could be. Gloria is the entire package: mentor, fashionista, life coach and expert, her beauty is just the tip of the iceberg 💃🏽
Gloria is a great character, the only problem I have with her is her decision to not to speak in Spanish with her sons. At the beginning Manny used to be kind of fluent in Spanish but as the show continued, his skills almost disappeared. With Joe we never saw her talking to him in Spanish. Cultural heritage goes in hand with language skills, that's why it's so weird to decide to not to teach your mother tongue to your kids.
That's because language is not actually taught unless aggressively maintained. It's absorbed. Any 2nd gen immigrant that doesn't have their language as a majority language in the environment (Spanish in Los Angeles is everywhere) very naturally will stop speaking their parent's tongue because it is not technically their mother tongue. Furthermore, if you learn grammar, spelling, literature, and any English courses in school, you realize to master a language fully is not just simply to speak it and to maintain 2 languages to that degree is incredibly difficult.
@@the8u9 I don’t thinks that’s entirely true. For example, I live in Spain (Spanish father, Dutch mom) and speak Dutch with my children. They speak it fluently even though there’s no external stimulation for it outside our home. Even their father doesn’t speak it at all. My eldest is almost 10 and now speaks Spanish, Catalan, Dutch and English fluently… I find that the language spoken by the mother is key in a child’s early language development. 😊🙏🏼
I think the reason we no longer see her doing that is that the show is produced for an english speaking audience that prefers that they don't have to think about or guess at what is being said on screen. I wouldn't bet on the show telling us a story of assimilation. It's just that in a two language household the most common approach is one parent one language and a lot of the audience wouldn't be able to appreciate her character if they don't understand what is being said.

OMG why this video have me crying tho?! So true about being open with one's emotions making you vulnerable but also knowing that and making the decision that you're too much of a loving person to let that stop you b/c it's stopping you from being your true, authentic self.
But that "freedom" isn't free- as Gloria herself has said in the show people don't treat her like a regular person, instead she's automatically put in the role of villain/temptress/golddigger/shallow/airhead/slut when literally did nothing except turn up, that's not fair...and it's not nice to always be seen as competition, to always be sexualized. Everybody has their own struggles, whatever they look like🤷♀️
The thing people used to criticise her the most was her looks because it fell into the Latina stereotype, but, as a curvy Latina who’s proud of her body, I loved that Gloria embraced that side of her and went full on it. I’m not going to hide or dress like a grandma because others might feel insecure. And I’m not talking about competing with other women or wanting to draw attention. Some of us like to look at ourselves in the mirror and say “yeah, I look good today” before facing the day. It’s not about “the others”. It’s about feeling confident about yourself. And yes, it’s only a part of personal confidence. But why should we hide it just because others find it “provocative”? It’s ridiculous. I loved that about Gloria.
my favourite part is when she made the adult be apart of a therapy session at Claire and Phils house and when Jake finally lets everything out she is there to comfort him ♥️♥️♥️
Women are far more guilty of treating other women, especially attractive ones, as competition. You constantly put men in that villainous position. Gloria's a fantastic character and nobody could've played her better than Sofia. Being in touch and open with your emotions is very healthy, though it must be said, there are absolutely times where reigning it in is necessary such as in work situations. If I went off on every negative Nancy I come across in my field (I work in medical), it would be a disaster (and I undoubtedly would have no career). It has nothing to do with "patriarchy" seeing as I work almost exclusively with females. It has everything to do with the fact that THEY (the parent or their family) are running on high emotions for obvious reasons. Is it right to take that out on anyone who's unfortunate enough to be in their vicinity at the wrong time? Absolutely not, but it's a part of any job in medical whether you're admin, nursing, a provider, etc.
I love your videos! However as a feedback in the Gloria Video too, I would have wished for a more critical look unto Gloria's more violent and (physically) abusive nature. When I started the show I must say that I was surprised on how a good person she was, I though, since the show was a comedy, they'd put her as a gold digger for the hahas, but no, she really was someone really smart in any way and treated everyone well
Ngl Gloria character was amazing. She being smart and actually strong was what I like. No some stereotypes of golden digger (there were definitely stereotypes tho)
Gloria is the one who glued the family together, she can easily disconnect jay from his family because he was always unavailable for his kids and not expressive but she made him to connect his family and inclusive.
You are wrong on the topic of expressing your emotions. You act as if Gloria's regular "small" outbursts were a net positive, but they aren't. When you project a clear image that you will strongly react to everything you are told people stop telling you things out of fear of your reaction. They start giving you the edited truth and it's entirely your fault for not fostering an environment that feels safer to express yourself. There's a balance to be had between "keeping all your feelings bottled" and "bursting 7 times per day"
You all 100% right. That truth has recently been unveiled to me by some important people in my life, because I don’t know how to properly express my emotions and they felt that they couldn’t express themselves freely without offending me, but I’m glad that I heard that hard truth because it’s what keeps me real and accountable.
You can "burst" into laughter or tears or paroxysms of joy too you know, as long as everybody gets to express themselves equally what's the problem?? I'd rather get a reaction- ANY reaction!!- rather than a blank stare all the time, at least then I'd know the person actually cares🤷♀️
Within context of our society i believe that everyone should take your points and consider that they apply to all people regardless gender or sex. It is good to acknowledge current issues but one should be mindful that they aren't progressing division.
She's one of the best characters written and played on a TV show. She is confident, smart and beautiful woman who is proud of her culture and loves herself in every way possible. She can come off as an annoying person at times because of her little burts every day but that's the reason why she has such strong bonds with everyone around her. She never lets any feeling bottle up that might cause a huge crack in their relationship. She has the kind of mindset not many ppl have and that's the thing that makes her one of the most special characters ever ❤❤
she even named her son money (manni). so... i am just kidding. i love her in the series. it is great, how they took the stereotype and twisted it beautifully and meaningfully.
You should look into characters that people either never liked or only started disliking after a second watch and talk about the few things they did get right like Ted from How I met your mother or Ross from Friends and on the opposite take a character that people tend to like and agree with and point out where they were wrong like Katara from Avatar the last Airbender or Mabel from Gravity falls.
Gloria is the kind of person I want to be but afraid. I also can’t express my emotions cuz it gives me the icks but Gloria isn’t shy nor afraid to express her opinions and personality.
No No No.....that's not how emotions work. Reacting to emotions is as bad as bottling up them up. You want to acknowledge and control your reaction to the emotion and process it in a healthy way. Otherwise what is the difference between an adult and a child? And I don't want to be anywhere near a person like Gloria
I don’t think people are trying to keep women quiet from society. I think it’s the opposite if you’re gonna be annoying, they wanted to do that with him to other females. The problem is they want to do that to men and they have their own stress struggle they don’t want more attitude. It’s just as simple.
Stoicism and bottling up your emotions is a stereotypical masculine trait so wtf you talking about women bottling up their emotions? Its almost like it's not a gender thing and we're all going through it but ok. Be the sexist.
TH-cam is testing out an algorithm that lets the channels know which type of thumbnails get higher engagement. And to keep on brand with the video as a Latina woman; POR QUÉ SI! ❤
She had a better life for her and her son at the expense of another woman..Jay abandonned the mother of his children for a younger and sexier woman. It's the rejection of the mature american woman who's seen as a Karen. Jay's ex wife is bitter and i totally understand her.
Wow. This channel really seems to look down on women, why am I not surprised. Why does content like this always paint us as victims? Stop blaming things like "the patriarchy" when women have it pretty well in the US. Are things perfect? No, nothing is. Other countries have it far worse, try advocating for them for once and stop thinking about yourselves.
I love Gloria BUT she was wrong about a lot, especially her kids' upbringing and spoiling them too much, or sabotaging Manny's relationships - some toxic motherhood stuff right there. Manny became a totally out-of-touch egomaniac because Gloria just praised him for everything... Yes, ruining your kid's confidence is horrible, just in another way, but she made Manny one of the least likeable characters... Joe was considered boring at best, annoying and most useless character at worst. But otherwise I agree. She helped Jay grow a lot as a person, as a father to ALL his kids....She does know her worth, she is a great problem-solver, she won't conform when people want her to change for their comfort, her security and fearlessness are indeed inspirational.... But let's not forget she stole the life of her sister. Honestly one of the very worst things anyone from the main cast has done. I love her, but objectively, she has done many, if not most of the most questionable things in the whole 11-season show (not counting the side characters like DeDe, Pameron, or that reality agent a**hole I can't recall the name of - he is definitely the WORST, Gloria can't compare). But let's not make this black-and-white and paint Gloria as some kind of saint. The show won more Emmy awards than any other comedy show in history mainly because of its quality writing and realistic, flawed characters you love (and sometimes hate).
I don't agree with this take. You show several scenes of her yelling at people and being physical with her husband. There are lots of great things about Modern Family and Gloria as a character, but she is not "right about everything" and this behaviour is not healthy

Everybody has their own struggles, whatever they look like🤷♀️
@@twiceshy9773 there’s struggles, and then there’s the bitter barriers of poverty.
Sofia really is an amazing comedic actor. With such amazing hair!
Family is Family, whether it is the one you start out with, or the one you end up with or the family you gain along the way…❤
For some reason this video had me in tears in a good way😢😅
She was a nurturing mom and at the same time didn't sugarcoated things to Manny
Gloria’s one shortcoming is Manny and how she always spoils and coddles him
She was a genius in this role.
I love your videos! However as a feedback in the Gloria Video too, I would have wished for a more critical look unto Gloria's more violent and (physically) abusive nature. Her hitting her husband is framed as something positive in the beginning of the video which I find rather, tbh, dusturbing. She has these violent outbursts of anger and this is why people dont respect but rather fear her, which certainly is a difference. In praisal of complex characyers I would find it great if you could also critique their darker and more toxic sides (if there are some) to their character - similarly to the Maddy Video!
When I started the show I must say that I was surprised on how a good person she was, I though, since the show was a comedy, they'd put her as a gold digger for the hahas, but no, she really was someone really smart in any way and treated everyone well
Gloria, was my fav char in this show, shes amazing!
Loved Gloria , from her sense of style to her confidence to her kindness everything is amazing
I miss Modern Family😭😭😩😩 so warm and easy to watch without unnecessary drama
Ngl Gloria character was amazing. She being smart and actually strong was what I like. No some stereotypes of golden digger (there were definitely stereotypes tho)
Everyone’s favourite character is usually Phil or Cam, but my fav is Gloria ☺️
Gloria is so good to all of them, one of my favourite characters on the show
Gloria is the one who glued the family together, she can easily disconnect jay from his family because he was always unavailable for his kids and not expressive but she made him to connect his family and inclusive.
We all have a lot to learn from Gloria ❤
I love this analysis, I never actually thought about it.
Glória is the pinnacle of emotional intelligence s2 and street intelligence when needed
she even named her son money (manni). so...
i am just kidding. i love her in the series. it is great, how they took the stereotype and twisted it beautifully and meaningfully.
Jay! Kiss you son, he is a mess 😂😂😂
releasing your emotions always is equally bad. It worked for gloria because it's a fiction not real life. In real-life, you pick a moderation path.
It's easier to be kind if you're at the top of the pyramid and everyone is at their knees to be on your good side.
What's up with these constant titles like "Gloria was right" or "XYZ was wrong"?
You should look into characters that people either never liked or only started disliking after a second watch and talk about the few things they did get right like Ted from How I met your mother or Ross from Friends and on the opposite take a character that people tend to like and agree with and point out where they were wrong like Katara from Avatar the last Airbender or Mabel from Gravity falls.
I love u,thank you for making this video, pple needed to understand this!❤❤❤❤👏
11:18 I alway have loved Sofía.❤❤❤🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴
Gloria is the kind of person I want to be but afraid. I also can’t express my emotions cuz it gives me the icks but Gloria isn’t shy nor afraid to express her opinions and personality.
No No No.....that's not how emotions work. Reacting to emotions is as bad as bottling up them up. You want to acknowledge and control your reaction to the emotion and process it in a healthy way. Otherwise what is the difference between an adult and a child? And I don't want to be anywhere near a person like Gloria
She's such a cool character
She sounds delightful, I think I'll watch the show lol
The most beautiful person in the family, and not only on the outside ❤
Sofía is an excellent comedian! Her looks … makes it funnier.
She is absolutely my favorite character in the entirety of the show.
I don’t think people are trying to keep women quiet from society. I think it’s the opposite if you’re gonna be annoying, they wanted to do that with him to other females. The problem is they want to do that to men and they have their own stress struggle they don’t want more attitude. It’s just as simple.
Gloria kept every one together
I really liked Gloria. She was both kind and tough.
Gloria definitely wasn’t stupid!
Thinking of the time Jay was going to crash a plane and Jay's first thought was "I hate when Gloria is right" 😂
Would love to see a feminist take on Roz from Frasier!
When jay spoke spanish it made my undies drops because that kind of adoration just make me fall
My favourite character by far, I love this show
“The women in my family, sometimes they shoot their husbands” 😂
Stoicism and bottling up your emotions is a stereotypical masculine trait so wtf you talking about women bottling up their emotions? Its almost like it's not a gender thing and we're all going through it but ok. Be the sexist.
This is a woketard feminist channel....dont expect to much. But stoicism is nothing bad per se.
gloria is the mom claire and mitch never had
what a toxic feminist discussion
It's called: Being Colombian ❤
Gloria made the family a family
Why does this video have two different thumbnails? I saw a different one on my other youtube account. I had never seen something like that.
TH-cam is testing out an algorithm that lets the channels know which type of thumbnails get higher engagement. And to keep on brand with the video as a Latina woman; POR QUÉ SI! ❤
0:12 the woman behind lol
No, she wasn't. She was abusive and toxic. If a man did half of the shit she pulled, he'd be reviled.
Go us Latins. She is stereotypical but in all the right ways!
Gloria has been through enough and is street smart, of course she's right.
Yeah....gloria type emotional outbursts will be considered extremely rude in asia.
What about when she ruined her sister's life??
She had a better life for her and her son at the expense of another woman..Jay abandonned the mother of his children for a younger and sexier woman. It's the rejection of the mature american woman who's seen as a Karen. Jay's ex wife is bitter and i totally understand her.
Anybody can do it with Gloria
Gloria is most of the women in my family 🎉😅
Aye Manny... vamos...
Latin power in the house
Podría aprender algo de mi compatriota latina ❤
My friend h and my dad anbu
I don't agree with this take. You show several scenes of her yelling at people and being physical with her husband. There are lots of great things about Modern Family and Gloria as a character, but she is not "right about everything" and this behaviour is not healthy
God... Western people are so therapized to the point they seem sterile
What Jasmine and Gino could have been if Gino could give up himself.
As a Colombian Woman myself, Gloria is such an inspiration and role model. Not for the man but for her personality and strong character. Sofia makes Colombia Proud ❤️🥰
ENFJ level 100
I was expecting to hear Gloria and instead I hear some feminist propaganda 👌🏻🤦🏻♀️
