Thanks - great overview. For what it is worth, the speed at which you speak is perfect for an all-thumbs student (me) to follow along and match up the settings. Much appreciated.
Thanks to Nick RAINS for sharing his experience and settings of the Leica SL2. It's pragmatic and we can take advantage of this hindsight to save time in the discovery of this fabulous camera.
Thank you for making this helpful video, sir! I just got my hands on one and didn’t realize how simple and customizable the buttons were. Your explanations make sense and your particular setup reasoning gave me a lot to consider when shooting. Hope to see more relevant videos from you because they are worth viewing!
I could watch your videos all of the time! They're so insightful & pragmatic as I'm new to the SL2-S and Leica in general! I love photographing with this camera too (I came from Canon)!
Thank you. This was incredibly helpful. I just received an SL2-S and I was stumped on how to toggle the info profiles. You explained it at the end of the video. super helpful! I learned a few other helpful things from you as well.
Thanks Nick, I watched your similar video when I set up my CL and it served me well, this one walked me through my new SL2. Very helpful!! Thanks again!!!!
I like the idea of a camera that doesn’t get get in the way for my wedding work, paired with my M10 and SL2 would be excellent I feel. Good instructional video, thank you...
Hi Logan. Sure does, less is more. Cameras need to 'get out of the way' and you really only need a limited range of menu options when you know what you are doing.
Hi Nick, thanks for the great video. I am about to purchase the SL2s, I think. I am wondering if these are about the same settings I might "borrow" if I do get the s?
At 5:49 you said that you set White Balance to daylight because you are shooting raw. Could you explain why this is as I have never heard this before. Many thanks
WB is only relevant as set in camera when shooting jpegs. If you shoot raw you can change the white balance on export with no downside of quality. Therefore if you shoot raw you don't have to worry much about choosing the right WB and can adjust as necessary later. Setting it to Daylight is just a convenience. Auto would be fine too - it matters little. Setting the correct WB in camera is, however, crucial if you shoot jpegs or video; for raw, it does not matter one whit, apart from as a rough guide to how the image could look (because the set WB does affect the preview image on the back of the camera).
Coming to the SL party a bit late =, but if using Manual mode with either an AF or manual focus lens can you set and apply the front rocker switch to magnification for any lens used-even M lenses too? Thanks for what you do.
In MF, with an AF lens, click the joystick to to trigger AF or move the focussing ring to magnify automatically. No need for the rocker switch but you could set it to trigger Magnify if you like. In MF with M lenses, just click the joystick to magnify (or less effectively IMO, use the rocker switch set to Magnify). To answer your question - yes you can set the rocker to magnify any lens.
Question: in case of using back button focus, where you focus with the joystick shoot with the release button, do you have to hold down the joystick while taking the picture, or is it fine to just single focus by pressing the joystick once and releasing to take the picture by pressing the release button afterwards?
Click once in AFs to focus. Then the focus is locked until you press it again (or turn the focussing ring on the lens). In AFc hold it down to track. Think of it as 'on demand AF'. Triggering the shutter release and metering, but not AF, is now the function of the shutter release button.
Question on the Lens Profiles. I have mine customized, but here is the question. When I put one of my non Leica M lens or Nikon lens on and find an appropriate lens match in the profiles is it saved and IBIS is activated or do I have to re-enter the lens every time I change lenses? Thanks.
A lot depends on the adapter. If it's am M lens or R lens on the genuine adapters then it will pick the profile for you and the sensor stabiliser will work. For 'dumb' adapters, you will need to set an equivalent lens each time you use it, a profile must be set for the stabiliser to work.
I just opened my new Leica SL2, when I play with the menu everything seems fine and then it just won't take any pictures. I never see the world through the screen on the back. It's just black. I press the shutter button and nothing. I formatted the SD card, battery charged, synced with the Leica FOTUS app. What could I be doing wrong?
I can only suggest you take it to a Leica store and ask the staff to assess it for you. In the meantime, if you can access the menus, try putting the camera into manual exposure mode and manual focus mode - see if the camera will now take a shot.
Hello,is it possible to use SL2 as webcam for live streaming? If yes,how can we charge it regarding power supply? I read it has clean HDMI,hope its true. And is there a picture profile that can be used for live streaming regarding getting good colors and video straight out of camera(no editing for live broadcast)?Thank you
Yes you can use it as a streaming camera as long as you have a video capture card or similar, to get the output into the computer The HDMI out is great and you can set different looks using custom LUTs. For power, the SL2 and SL2-S will run on external power via USB-C but I have found it's a bit fussy when it comes to precise power outputs of the USB power bricks. I use an 18W iPad USB-C charger and it works just fine.
Was looking for exactly a video like this but then when you skipped over flash settings because “you don’t use flash” it made me chuckle and cry. It’s nearly impossible to find any info about Leica flash use incl the SF line
Flash use is a long way down the list of Leica users priorities, hence the omission. FWIW, when I do use flash it's totally manual, TTL is not predictable enough for me.
Hi Rob. In Auto ISO and Aperture Priority it's the lowest shutter speed the camera will choose before pushing up the ISO. 1/250 is good for street work as it will freeze movement. For other work you could choose 1/60 or even lower. For some reason the SL2 does not offer a shutter speed limit that's a function of the focal length - 1/f for example. The CL and Q2 do, the SL2 does not.
Thank you! I can’t tell you how useful your videos are. This one has saved me as just changed from Canon to Leica!!🎉

This was excellent! Thanks so much for taking the time to go through all the settings.

Thanks for the video. That trick on cycling through the profiles to get different camera assistant views is very useful. The SL2 is a great upgrade.
Glad it was helpful!

Love the menu system in the SL2. Makes others look clunky.

Nice one Nick. Wasn't aware of the depth of field indicators.
You are welcome.
Oooh....I didn’t realise that we can press and hold the focusing icon on the screen to adjust the focusing frame area/size. Cool. Thanks for the tip.
Happy to help!
Excellent, very helpful!
Glad to hear it!

Presumably there’s not much difference from the SL2-S. Or is there?
