Darren is a very skilled hanger and finisher of drywall. Takes me back to the days in the Midwest where I learned the trade. After moving back to the east coast, I was introduced to blue board and veneer skim coating. This has saved many thousands of hours on jobs over the years. There literally is about 3x the amount of work required with drywall than with veneer plastering, yet for some reason, people charge less for it. My hat goes off to Darren and his son, they do good work! Just glad I don't need that sander anymore. Thanks for the vid, Scott, keep em coming!

ok so the smooth is a 1900s look that the east coast has had (from lathe and plaster days) and IMO is outdated and boring. orange peels, knock downs, skip trowels, and stomp textures give depth and design to the walls that truly only started in the lat 70s, 80s, and skip trowel didnt take hold in the mid west and west states until the 90s. so don't knock it until you know it. i have been a drywaller as a pro for 30+ years, ran hang crews, finish crews, and texture crews for a very long time. ran 100 patch guys in my area for 15 years, just before anyone wants to question my experience

I have done a ton of drywall as a general contractor/carpenter. Back in the day, texture was a cost effective way to finish drywall, in less time, without the additional steps smooth-wall requires. Darren did such a fantastic job finishing, sanding, and priming, that a final spot-skim with a drop-light, to highlight imperfections, would have produced a near level 5 finish. Note: to achieve a true level 5 finish, I have had tapers apply a "putty" coat buy rolling a coat of thinned topping mud on the entire surface and then spending an insane amount of time sanding with a drop-light. Smooth-wall in the long run is the best by far IMO.
Scott, as a texture job goes, you got the best there is!

As you called out, it depends on the trends and preferences of the year and area. With respect to the excellent work that Jim did mudding and finishing, I'd be curious to hear his thoughts and preferences around texture and the "need" for it at all. As a drywaller it usually depends on the builder and or homeowner. We drywallers love doing smooth but some ( the people paying) prefer the textured look. Different textures cover different amount but orange peel and knockdown cover everything. Most textures you just have to worry about edges and filling the bevel in the flat.

I agree, adding texture is a mistake. Not only does it look crappy (which I'll grant is a personal choice) it is difficult to blend in the inevitable repairs. There will small (and large) changes, repairs, etc. over the years, and you will always see the line between new & old work. What a bad call.

I’ve done a lot of drywall finish in 41 years
Never have I seen someone fill nails prior to taping
Taping is the most time consuming task
We’ve always done that and hit nails as we go

If you want flat walls you have to coat all of it and sand it super flat, lest very nick in the wall show through paint and light.
In the south, its popular for people to just paint raw drywall.
In the south, paint also tends to peel often and painters are always needed. 🤔

Texture helps hide mistakes. If you attempt drywall finishing at your home for the first time, you will have many many mistakes. Even with a little experience, mistakes show on a flat wall. You might not know until a light or lamp points along the wall. An ant looks like a foot long streak for example

Having spent many hours with a hawk and trowel in that apartment rebuilding sections of lath-and-plaster wall and fixing messed up joints: What Darren does with that knife is pure magic. And those high-production tape-and-mud tools are so cool.

Texture hides more imperfections so generally it's cheaper. With smooth there is nowhere for imperfections to hide so it costs more.
Surfaces getting texture can be level 3 drywall finish (tape and 2 coats mud) but the best smooth drywall will be level 5 where the entire board is skimmed and light checked while sanding.
