    Have to use winter tyres. We have icy roads (and snow/slush/etc) and thing called ”killer gravel”, so you need to have really good puncture protection and studs. Continental Contact Spike, Schwalbe Marathon Winter (or Winter Plus), Terrene Griswold, 45NRTH Gravdal and Suomi Tyres Routa are mostly used options. Yes, depending on were you ride. On more rural/semi rural roads (often covered in mud, gravel, etc, ) then something with a file tread is a better choice than a slicker tyre. Also, run them tubeless. Or use an inner tube with slime. Winter isn't the time to be worrying about weight or rolling resistance.

    For my normal winter riding season in Alberta, Canada, I mostly use my fat bike with 4.6” 49N Wrathchilds with carbide studs at 10 psi. The problem is ice under snow. Also, I’ve found that shifters freeze below -15C unless you use low temp grease. Below that the biggest problem is keeping feet/hands warm but I’m happy to ride down to -28C. Below that I find that chains start to snap a little too easily on hard shifts, and then you’re buggered.

    Michelin Pro 4 Endurance Mk2 for me. Not having to stop to change an innertube is worth the trade-off imho. Where I probably disagree with this review is where thread pattern are concerned. Imho they simply do not matter on road bike tires. Manufacturers put them there for customer re-assurance, nothing more in the same way that a cycle tire can never ever 'aquaplane'. It's just not possible. Quite the opposite, Threads can capture and embed sharp objects which otherwise wouldn't leading to obvious complications without wanting to mention the word.

      That's down to personal choice and also the intended bike you're putting it on. I had 4 seasons on my commuter all year round where as my weekend fun bike ran Rubino pro IIIs all year round. Both are great tyres but you can't get the pro IIIs anymore. I dont really recommend the new Rubino Pro's that replaced the Pro IIIs. They are less puncture resistant and don't grip half as good as they used to.
      If you're going to run expensive tyres like GP5000s in spring/summer. I would try to preserve and hopefully extend their life a little by switching them with something else for the winter.
      Everything is personal opinion/choice. For the commuter, puncture protection is always better than a speedy tyre

    Here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Once it drops to an average of atleast 0 degree's celcius I switch to Schwalbe Winter K-Guard Studded 35mm 700c Tires. Once the snow starts staying down so does the ice. Though I've tried once to get buy on all season tires at the beginning of winter (my 1st winter ride). I ended up over the handle bars. I cycle all year long as it is my means of commuting to work. Has anyone had success with riding in the snow or ice with some really knobby gravel tires?

    summer tyres all year, but in winter I ride only on the turbo :P some days on race out but can count that on 1 hand, most of the times I go outdoors on my gravelbike in the winter. also to keep my apitite healthy and when the springs comes I realy enjoy the racebike more.

  • @GeorgeD1
    @GeorgeD1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tyre compound matters, yes, but! Conforming to irregularities on the surface/road to a certain extent actually decreases rolling resistance. For example, Continental's Gatorskins are much tougher and almost feel like plastic to the touch, but have almost double (in the realm of 8-10 watts per tyre...) the rolling resistance of GP 5000's at optimal pressure, etc. when both tyres' rolling surface when biking in a straight line is exactly the same (practically sleek).

    I only use a gravel bike (2018 fuji jari 1.3) with two set of wheels as a road and gravel bike. So I don't really care about perfect performance and (I still do 31-32 km/h average 100km+ 1000D+ group rides with it, but no crits or whatever). So I only use a set of tires all year round for simplicity.
    I use 28mm tubetype continental 4 seasons on a dt swiss p1800 set for road all year round, sometimes switch with 35mm donelly x'plor ush for light gravel or allroad bikepacking. I also replaced the front hub on my original Stan's NoTubes Grail S1 front wheel with a son dynamo hub for touring after the back hub failed.
    I use 40mm tubeless hutchinson touaregs on a gr1600 set for gravel, I bring them to quasi-xc settings quite often or more rolly winter "allroad" settings, they are slightly unsufficient in the mud (but nothing technique can't fix) and slightly overkill for summer type 1/2 gravel but I won't switch tires because it's too annoying with tubeless.

    Switched to Michelin power road tubeless in September, basically those tyres are not coming off and back on again if I can avoid it! Apparently quite a grippy tyre so hoping that tubeless upgrade is enough to tide me over the worst months, doing ok so far. one tyre to rule them all?

    what about a similar video but with wider tyres, like 32mm, for the winter? 25mm in winter conditions may not give many advantages compared to 32mm or 35mm slick tyres, winterish or not

  • @playandteach
    @playandteach 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been using my bike with bigger tyres for the last couple of weeks. 42mm (I think) Panaracer SKs. Not winter specific, but am I getting better grip than I would with 28mm 4000s? I can feel much more rolling resistance - not bad going uphill, but harder to keep up on the flats. Are these a sensible option?

  • @SuperNeilB

    I've swapped from 28mm road tyre to 37mm off-road tyres purely because, around here, the tractors are now leaving mud all over the road and the cycle tracks are full of puddles and slimy mud.

  • @barbmorris7785

    Good timing! I was going to write in to #askgcntech about this. Although you mentioned TL, my question is, what happens to the sealant in colder temperatures? I've noticed how much stiffer the tires are already (compared to riding clinchers last year) and have felt less grippy on corners in temperatures from 4-8 degrees C (Vancouver, Canada). They are 25mm Conti 5000TL. btw I wear long finger gloves with NZwool liners in this temp!
    And speaking of temperature, if I put said bike and tires on a trainer indoors, will they overheat?

I have been looking at the tyres mentioned (Pirelli Cinturato) online and they appear to start at 700x26 and say they are tubular and tubeless ready. Can I use these type and size on my set up and is tubular completely different to what I have?

    First thing-you guys need some mudguards, I know you have an “Ass Saver” Olly, but full guards is what you need. When I used my Specialized Roubaix during winter I had Continental 4 Seasons tyres on it, now I have a Ti gravel bike I use as my winter bike and have 45mm Hutchinson Overide tyres set up tubeless @ 30psi front, and 35psi rear-loads of grip!

So much more comfy and better grip.. more punctures though especially in the wet when tubeless really struggles to seal, at least there are plugs eh..defo not looking to go back to tubes..can’t understand why they would be riding deep section wheels and no mudguards.. this is Britain ffs.. come on guys be real..

    Winter tires, as distinct from snow tires, for autos are a very good thing, and winter tires for bikes should be a good thing, so I had a look at Pirelli's bike tire website (what product placement?) and there's no mention of the temperatures for which their P ZERO™ Velo 4S have been optimized nor mention of four-season, much less winter, suitability of the tubeless only [eyeroll] Cinturato [chin-too-rah-to] Velo. There's also no mention of what temperature below which the "summer tire" P ZERO™ Velo becomes unsuitable.
    So; #askGCN, who makes a proper winter bicycle tire, and what temperature envelope are they designed for?

    Hi! This is my first winter season as a cyclist (I used to swim throughout winter, but then covid happened), I would like to invest in some new tyres, however right now I have 23'' and if I am not mistaken 25'' should fit on the wheels. My question to the more experienced/tech oriented cyclists out there: how do I know if the tires not only fit on the wheels, but also fit between my frame?

    • @Cyclonut96
      @Cyclonut96 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the non paid advertisement answer: You don't need different tires for the winter on your road bike. Unless you run super expensive and fragile racing stuff but then again if you do you probably can afford to have a pair of training wheels. Just lower the pressure and keep a spare tube. Tubeless on the road is useless and messy.

    The term "winter" seems to be relative. These guys are riding in what would be early autumn conditions here. I run 45Nrth Gravdals in the winter here. I could probably get by with something a little less aggressive, like Schwalbe Marathon Winter to gain some rolling efficiency, but getting caught on a day when it snowed 6" while I was working makes the Gravdals a little more useful.
