- TRA Level 3 Certification Flight was flown at LDRS-28 in Potter, NY on July 5, 2009. The flight was powered by an Aerotech M1850W. The apogee was 6381 ft (AGL) with peak velocity of 445 mph and maximum acceleration of 7.5 gees.

Well that escalated quickly.
The launch station has to be about 4,000 to 6,000 in its self. Then the rocket and the motor sizes to get that thing to fly that high. That was awesome though, and like the electronic devise that deploys the parachute at like 500 feet that super cool.
It can be expensive, they have launch stands there many share...

Very nice launch! Looked like about $10k of equipment in my uneducated opinion but I suspect it cost even more.
That depends a lot on the kit (and how much work you have to put in yourself), and the size of the motor/what propellant you loaded the motor with. The altitude-reporting system is a few hundred bucks easy if it's an off-the shelf one, one of the fancy ones that has a base-station that talks to you live costs even more.
There's pentaclorate fuel, which costs something like $1,000 a pound... it can get super pricey, yeah
Probably no more than $5000 in material, if there is then it's just extra unnecessary gadgets
L3's can be as cheap as a few hundred dollars. Rocketry is expensive, though.

Whats the level 3 certification for?
Levels 1, 2, and 3 certs allow you to purchase and fly high powered rockets. The higher the number, the larger the engine. Certification is also required for hybrid rockets. Canada has 4 cert levels.
This allows the hobby to self-police and reduces arbitrary uneeded and unwarrented govermental regulation. It also promotes a better education and understanding of the aerodynamics, physics, etc. involved through mentoring. It really is rocket science, and if you're intrested it's within most people's reach.

@@jasongeerer8163 Only advice I've got is start with an Estes Starter kit. You can do a lot of the high power stuff with low power rockets and grow into it from there. Also check with NAR and TRA (US) to see if there's a club near you. It saves a lot of headache later on.
Some rocket trackers require a Ham license, FYI. 😁

have ever gone out with your rocket and say No launch, scrub the mission? like nasa or space-X does 1/2 the time.

Well low Earth Orbit is well over 120,000 feet and this rocket reached only 6,381 feet so it is mostly for amusement.
LehighValleyrailfan Productions Space starts around 100,000 meters (approx 300,000 feet). So yes, LEO does start well over 120,000 feet (pun intended)
