    The government should encourage people to build their own rocket motors. Get the industry going here.

    This is really great footage!
    With the upcoming season would it be possible to caption altitude, max speed, g-force, and time to climb info?
    They are all great Rocketeers but a little more info would a fantastic (helpful?) addition to understand the performance.

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Cheers. While it would be great to include the extra information, most of the time it is really difficult to obtain simply because you don't have access to it. Either you don't know who the rocket belongs to, as at events like this there are 100's of rocketeers and 100's of rockets going up. Often you don't know the results of a flight until it is recovered which could be hours or even days later. Sometimes the flights are not instrumented. Ultimately it is just the level of effort required to get the info for a hobbyist with limited amount of time to edit a video.

    The rockets I find most satisfying are the O3400 at 0:19 and the N2000 (1/4 scale V2) at 6:25 because they take a few moments to get going and seem fly more gracefully. For some reason, the rockets that go from zero to 500kph in 1 second don't appeal to me as much.

      @AirCommandRockets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Julian, yes it was a very good event. I was really impressed by the quality of the university entries in the competition. They had 2 competitions, nearest to 10,000 feet and nearest to 30,000 feet. They also flew some science payloads. The first comp winner got to 10,081 feet! One of the rockets even had active air breaks that monitored its flight and adjusted the breaks to try to hit the right altitude. The full Horizon update will be probably a couple of weeks with all the details. :) I am just putting together the Dark Shadow video which will be done next week. ;)

    I haven't done model rocketry since I was a kid, 40+ years ago, so I'm just wondering if these rocketeers still adhere to the model rocketry code of ethics, where rockets can only be made of balsa wood and cardboard, must be launched within X degrees of vertical, and cannot have guidance systems in them, amongst other articles of the code...

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes for low power rockets (LPR) this is still true and clubs do enforce model rocket safety codes. However, in the last 40 years motors have become available that are very powerful, which necessitates construction materials and techniques that are far beyond balsa wood and cardboard to make these rockets fly safely without disintegrating. The world of HPR (high power rocketry) has evolved it's own set of rules and experience progression levels that allow people access to more and more powerful motors if they can demonstrate the ability to build and fly rockets safely. As far as guidance goes quite a few projects have been developed by rocketeers that help control roll rate and also steer the rocket on a vertical trajectory if it deviates too much.

      For the stills we use a Nikon D3400 with the 70-300mm lens, and for video we use a number of cameras but mostly the Panasonic HC-WX985M 4K camera. Here is a video about some of the cameras we use: th-cam.com/video/Ct8qNh8vlog/w-d-xo.html , since the video we have upgraded the main camera to the Panasonic HC-WX985M, because the previous one met an unfortunate end when it was hit by a descending rocket (under parachute) when it was out near the pads on a tripod.

    • @giantossi
      @giantossi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AirCommandRockets Thank you for your answer. The quality of the stills is indeed very good. To me the camera sounds like a Canon 5D Mk 3 or something similar. Not an entry level camera 😁. Me, i am using a Canon 700d,, also entry level with the same speed of 5Fps. Your pictures of the launching rockets are very sharp and impressive. I am from Germany and we do not have so much places were we are allowed to launch rockets as high as you are. For next summer i will check the internet and hopefully there will be a place nearby, so i can take my son and have an exciting day. For you and your family all the best wishes for the future.

    what causes the blue exhaust on some of the rockets?

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It all depends on the propellant formulation. There are different propellants depending on what you need the rocket to do. Some are fast burning and some slower burning. They can have additives to colour them say red or green, sometimes they add titanium particles that produce sparks, sometimes propellant mixtures produce white smoke, others produce black smoke.

    It was really interesting, but whoeve recorded this had a drone and ground footage so why were we seeing stills sometimes, shots of basically notta. Should've had your ground then a shot of the rocket passing the drone giving us sight of the whole flight?! All could've been edited together and turned out great, half of the launches we missed looking at peoples heads...?

      Unfortunately you don't always get ideal conditions to film as one would want. You are limited where you can film from at a launch like this. The stills were added because it shows more detail of the rocket in flight rather than from a wide angle video shot. Fast moving rockets are difficult to film, and those few stills used, they were chosen out of several hundred that did not turn out so well. Lastly, the video edit here is just footage we took in between prepping and launching our own rockets. You could do better if you were there exclusively to film rockets.

    Its really great geting to see all the people vvho are embracing model rocketry as a hobby and also pushing the limits of vvhat altitude can be acheived in their class. It vvould be great if groups of experienced hobbyists vvere allovved to create rockets capable of actually acheiving a lovv earth orbit & the payload being a very small transmitter broadcasting a radio signal like the original Sputnik & also being able to take a fevv pictures vvhile in orbit . I vvould think that 3 successfull orbits vvould be more than enough ( Heck , just getting it to orbit once vvould be a major accomplishment ) before it fell back & burnt up ( I dont think that it'd be neccessary for it to survive reentry & that vvoud save both vveight and space as vvell as not becoming space junk that could endanger any communication satelites ). I knovv the scientific community as vvell as the hobbyists vvould definately enjoy such a challenge but the main problem vvould be in getting a country to allovv for such attempts to be made at a specific time as air traffick vvould have to be redirected around the area , the American southvvest or Australia vvould be close to ideal to launch from but so vvould Siberia even more so . Plus the international attention & cooperation vvould be something that could be broadcast to every country & vvatched enthusiasticly. I think that the event could run up to 3-5 days ( maybe 7 to take vveather into account ) & be held annually as something that vvould bring the vvhole vvorld together & reignite the vvorlds interest in space exploration as vvell as something that vvould encourage the young to pursue careers in science ( vvhich should really be done more by every nation & in every feild of science & not just rocketry, though it'd be an excellent start ) . I do have a question & if you've actually read this far I thank you, but has any group of hobbyists ever attempted to have a vveather balloon carry the rocket up to say 10,000 ft & then launch as it seems to me that it'd make the task of achieving lovv earth orbit easier to obtain, though quite a fevv participants may not be enthusiastic about allovving this method . It vvould also not be as exciting because it is quite thrilling to any vievver to experience the countdovvn & be able to see the rocket lift off & that is understandable as vvell as hobbyists vvanting to have the event remain "pure" vvith no form of assistance . But I think that the event could be organized into many classes & avvards should be handed out according to vvhich team acchieved the greatest altitude in their class vvether it be launched from the ground or assisted by balloon ( if that is even possible though I dont knovv vvhy it vvouldnt ) & allovving for launches @ 10 , 20 & 30k ft in different size/vveight classes. My appologies for my ignorance as it has been over 2 & 1/2 decades since I last launched any model rockets , & those vvere vv/my youngest sister though I am hoping vvhen I visit her next to be able to build & launch a rocket vv/my nephevv vvhom I'd love to encourage into the hobby. Thank You to Air Command Rockets for posting this video as it sparked my enthusiasm again & I'm glad something of real interest finally came into my suggestions here on you tube . .....Also sorry for my broken "double you" key as vvell as being overly verbose .

      Congratulations, this is the longest comment I have seen on TH-cam. :) And thanks for explaining the "W" issue in the comment. :) Regarding launching rockets from a balloon, look up "Rockoon", it is a real concept and many experiments have been done with it. Paperwork aside, achieving low earth orbit is really difficult for amateurs with limited funds. There are some projects under way, but these are more private commercial than hobbyists. Reaching the Karman line is currently what is possible at the very top end of the sport.

      @roger white don’t think any team would be close to make it to leo. Its an really hard challenge. The best non commercial rockets that are Build by students still have a long journey before Even beeing able to think about it.

    How come the first launch achieved such a slow velocity as part of the 1st or even 2nd stage? What is the specific impulse of that mojtor supposed to be? Was the plume supposed to look like that? Does altitude scale with size 1:1? ie: 3X XXX feet for 1:2 scale means 6-7X XXX feet for 1:1?
    Also weren't Nike missiles meant as an ABM? So you'd need incredible velocity wouldn't you?
    With a Nike, modern Hypersonic missiles, and say just a regular or hobby rocket or missile...what's the difference in specific impulse, fuel, and way to achieve such a velocity?
    Also if your rocket is not going into LEO and doesn't sperate from stages, what's the point in having multiple stages?

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of interesting questions. The slow velocity is due to the rocket being filmed in slow motion. If you want to know the full details about this particular rocket have a look at the forum thread here: forum.ausrocketry.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5019 It is a very impressive build. Quick summary on the speed of this rocket: Booster reached mach 1.14 and the sustainer's peak velocity was mach 2.14
      Just so that we are clear, this is a half scale model rocket. Just like people play with model trains, you can't really compare the power of a model train to a real train in a meaningful way.
      Multiple stages will help you achieve higher altitude in model rockets the same way they do for regular rockets whether you are trying to go orbital or sub-orbital.
      Was the plume supposed to look like that? Yes... for this particular motor used on the rocket.

    15:45 - Jim's L600 Rattworks Hybrid. - Very little smoke... what's the fuel?

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a hybrid. It normally burns some kind of plastic like Polypropylene (not sure what Jim used) as the solid propellant, and then for the oxidizer it uses Liquid Nitrous Oxide. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid-propellant_rocket
