I have the EVO for 3 weeks. Love it. The camera is way better than the DJI Mavic Platinum, which I used to own. The difference in quality is noticeable without the use of any special equipment. What I also love is that when I take my EVO out to fly, I don't have to worry about DJI's firmware update restrictions. DJI restricts the Mavic to an attitude of 10 meters if it detects a new firmware is available, which forces you to update even if you don't want to, thereby wasting precious battery and flight time. With the EVO, I can fly normally even if a firmware is available. This is the one thing that I despised the most about DJI products. I'm so glad the EVO is out so I don't have to every buy another DJI drone again. Additional, Unlike DJI, Autel doesn't track its customers' flying so no big brother issues. Overall, the Autel is a better drone in almost every point which is important to me.
God I'm glad I didn't buy the Autel EVO with that flipn Horizontal Tilt took forever to fix than well rear Obstacle Avoidance that doesn't stop it plunging into a Tree. Then the follow me that looses you .. Seriously. DJI Mavic 2 Pro 1in Sensor and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom have Arrived and No Issues and Selling like Hot Cakes ** **
@@Riddick_4506 well really the only real re iewer channels are Captain drone and Dustin. They're the only two I like. I prefer Captain drones channel a little more cause he has that happy personality and he really interact with his audience and makes you laugh and smile and you just wanna watch his videos for his personality mainly then the review comes a long with it. Dustin is my second favorite reviewer he does a great job I love his channel but I feel like he's a mystery all you know are his hands and his voice. I admit I like interactive reviews where the reviewer is engaged with their audience. I don't know if you ever watched him but Potato Jet is another one who is happy and interactive, it draws you in.
Liked your initial summary about who will like the Evo. All these drones have some issues and you could list pluses and minuses for all of them. Evo seems to have two pluses that I really like the looks of. 1) The small controller with the integrated display looks nice. No one else has that except for the really big Yuneec controllers. 2) No NFZ is a benefit. I fly in a lot of ClassG airspace (as part 107) that DJI restricts. Both of these features appear to help get the Evo in the air with less hassle.
I love everything about the Evo so far. One thing I'd really like to see in "Waypoints" are smooth linear transition altitudes from one point to the next as well as the ability to curve around the waypoint. Having multiple POI's would be cool too. Even one POI during the Waypoint would be awesome.. Come on Autel, if Anafi can do this with Flight Plan, you guys can do it.
Thanks Jack. It took awhile to make it to me due to supply shortages, inventory mishaps and the fact I live in Canada where cross border customs and our postal system slow things down. I was surprised to see that a bag came with it. That may have just been DroneWorks tossing it in, which was nice.
I think anyone who ordered it in the month of June got one of those bags. Btw Steve, I didn't realize the Evo had the waypoint missions you could set without the drone on, I'm going to try that out this evening. Thanks for pointing that out, it's an awesome feature that may be overlooked by some people...
Steve great video. The permanent fix for the horizon tilt issue is being tested by a few reviewers. That descent issue needs addressed as well. Overall looks like a good drone.
Bill, in my days of flying DJI Phantom 2 drones, it was so very common to have all kinds of problems with every feature on the DJI drone... not to mention constant fly-aways! Today, fly aways are minimal, and most features just seem to work. The AUTEL is a promising drone (perhaps released a bit early before it was completely baked) and can only get better as time goes on.
I don't know, but my autel evo did not have the huge tilt issue that others are flying with. My first flight was a couple of days ago, and I did updated to the latest patch, and so far, I have no complaints about the tilt at all. I don't think it's 100% yet, but i'd say it's at 95% fixed. See my latest vid if interested, at :20 th-cam.com/video/IO2SlIAe2QA/w-d-xo.html
Here they are: - ANAFI (due to price, camera, flight time and flight features) - EVO (due to price, flight time and camera) - TYPHOON H - Original version (due to price and features) Karma and 3DR Solo are discontinued due to performance and sales. They had potential, but never arrived at their full potential. The above are considered quality consumer drones. If you want less expensive and more entry level good drones, have a look at the MJXRC BUGS series.
Great demo. Good job and thanks for taking your time to help us shoppers decide. Do you know if they have any firmware updates since this was shot? Do you allow Face Book communication? Best Regards, David
Hi David, Yes there have been firmware updates and the horizon tilt is 99% fixed as well as a few other features. At this time I do not have a FaceBook Captain Drone page. I unfortunately just don't have the time to keep it active and interactive. One day when I retire from my day job I will.
Got your reply. Thanks...Keep up with the great work as best as you can. We all love them. FB can be a hassle if you have a lot of followers. I totally understand there. Have a great rest of your weekend before another week of work. that is a nasty word around here now. Now a retired Microsoft Engineer IT engineer for many years. Glad that stress is gone now. I was under PCP's orders to get away from 24x7 on-call stress at age 60, so I did. Never been happier. Thank the lord I saved way more than financial advisors suggested. Else, I would have been in hot water and still working to survive. Take care. Best Regards, David
Hello Captain Drone!! I just purchased a autel evo with the rugged pack. Hard case with 3 batteries. I love this drone thanks for your reviews. If you were to give someone some beginer tips. What would they be? Thank you Ricky
My Evo came with a scraping fan. I think there are two fans in the drone. One comes on the moment the drone is turned on, than the other comes on after Evo warms up a bit. It’s that fan that was way noisy. I removed the 6 torque head screws that secure the orange belly pan, slightly pried the belly pan away from the main body, than re-seated the belly pan and lightly torque the torque head screws. No more fan noise. FYI. In my opinion the Evo, is just ok. I like it, but I like my Anafi better. Evo doesn’t even come close to my MP. (again just my opinion)
Hey Capt, I know this is an old review but I look at all your older reviews since I'm just getting into the drone scene. I'm think of getting an Autel Evo even though the Evo II is out and its 2021 already. My question is, I notice the speed on the Evo, which seems real fast and fun, are they're any other fast flying drones in this price range. Thanks in advance, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the waypoint information. Many of the reviews say you have to fly to the waypoints and set them with the drone in flight. I like that the Explorer app allows me to set waypoint missions without even being connected to the drone. On my Mavic Pro&Air I use a DJI App called Drone Harmony which works very similar to the Explorer App. My Evo gets here Thursday the 19th of July and I have already planned a 3 mile survey route using the Explorer App. You are definitely one of the more thorough reviewers and you are not biased. I thank you for that.
Love your videos and your non bias reviews, considering buying the Anafi but do you think the Evo is worth the price upgrade, keeping in mind the exchange rate and our wonderful taxes in Ontario, thanks
If the ANAFI is a drone you are moving up to, then it is a great deal. Your next step would be the MAVIC AIR and then the EVO. The MAVIC AIR is more capable (feature wise) then the other two. However, the ANAFI is light and portable and has many cinema shooting features that are very handy (just no obstacle avoidance), and the camera is great. The Air also has a great camera & finally the EVO has less features than the other two, however the camera is better in video but not in photo (ANAFI has the best camera for photo).
Captain, I have not got my Evo yet, I'm waiting till they fix the issue, so around this Fall. But i do own 3 different brands of Dones, Yunnec Q500, Parrot Bebop2, and the DJI Mavic pro. All of them have their downfalls. And to me it depends on what your plans are. But I will say this, as far as I'm concerned Parrot has the BEST customer service in the business.
CAPTAIN DRONE Parrot is just like that, thy will stay on phone with you if have to troubleshoot a issues, and if you want thy will call you back if you want. And as much as a DJI cost thy treat you like crap, and ask you have you check the website. Dhaaa that is why I called you.
Great video Captain!! 👍👍 this drone is growing on me and as you said all the problems it’s having can be fix with firm update. My personal opinion we need this drone to be successful and compete with DJI competition is always good especially for us the consumers. Looking forward to your other videos.
I couldn't agree more. The more good drones on the market, the more options for the consumers at various price ranges. As the competition heats up... the consumers are the winners!
Hi Kim. It has had several firmware updates to address the titled horizon which seems to have worked about 95% of the time. The rear sensors work in follow me mode. The speed has been increased and it is an overall more stable, less twitchy drone. The orbit mode still shows a bit less smoothness in the camera image, but Autel is supposed to have a fix for that.
Thank you. The EVO is a very well made drone with plenty of potential. It was released a bit early, and only in the US, so it has so much more to come. It flys nicely and the camera for video is top notch. All it is lacking is more automated flight features like all modern drones have.
CAPTAIN DRONE They will get the bugs worked out soon, and you pretty much essentially got a phantom 4 pro thats foldable and smaller. Not a bad deal at all.
As you say, if you're invested in DJI and have had success, investing in a new drone ecosystem means taking on new problems which you have most likely already worked out with your current drones. The Evo looks like a solidly made UAV, but my Mavic, Phantom 4 Pro and Spark all fly the way I want. I'd consider the Evo if I wasn't invested in DJI. My old X-Star was also nice, but Autel took forever to update firmware and fix Yaw, magnetic interference and other issues. Still, as a company, no other did what Autel did: Paid for my Part 107 test, gave me a free battery, and a Starbuck $10 gift card. Their support is "state of the art."
I got the EVO as my first drone, first flight yesterday, maybe I have nothing to compare it to but it was soooooo easy to fly, I had it in the air 2 minutes after taking it out, the EVO Explorer app is just clean, well-designed, and easy to use, I've seen videos of the DJI interface, I'm sure you get used to it but it just looks so cluttered and intimidating, like what gauges do you have to watch not to crash your DJI drone? Set up an orbit around my workplace 1 minute after getting it in the air, if your big screen phone dies mid flight just pull the cable out and the controller screen automatically displays the video feed and controls, it's my first drone and flown all of 10 minutes, EVO is just amazingly easy to use for newbies like me.
Outstanding and very balanced and factual review! I really liked how you can set up a waypoint flight by using a pen to program the flight, very nice. Again, thanks for all your great reviews and testing, truly appreciate all your hard work and time involved in producing these videos.
Wow. Another great video. Thanks. If there is no internet available, can you cache the satellite map to create the waypoints? And in the orbit mode, can it do that with a moving object? Tia
@@ralph9987 OK, now I see what you are asking. You want to see the maps when you have no DATA on your cell phone. I don't know if you can cache them in advance, I've never tried it.
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 yep that's exactly what I was trying to say. Thanks. Btw did you find out if the evo will orbit around a moving object? Thanks again and keep up the great Work!
Hi Tom. Below every video I place links to the gear I used to film the video. You'll see a statement like "GEAR I USED TO FILM THIS VIDEO" following by the information.
Simply the best, Captain. I love your no-nonsense style. And you helped me to buy this drone. My mobile device is wi-fi but not cellular: can I cache maps in Autel Explorer?
Good question. I have never tried it because my phone has cell service. Autel did allow one to cache maps for their previous drones, so if it does not currently exist, it soon will.
Great video I have a Mavic pro I'm thinking of the autel Evo I know the camera is better than the Mavic Pro and I know the autel camera is not as good as the phantom 4 Pro how far off is it in quality terms?
The Phantom 4 Pro camera is better (in my opinion), both in video and photo. However, the EVO's camera, for such a small sensor, is really good (better than the Mavic Pro). I like the video quality but I don't like the photo quality in JPEG. There are too many artifacts in the JPEG photo compression. The RAW photos are good though.
At 1:30 on issue #5, you have a complaint of "unstable on quick decent". This is not something that can be corrected unless you are inverted flying straight down or simply falling as with a race drone. The phenomenon of instability on rapid happens to all hovering aircraft, helicopters included and is called "Settling with power". When I am bring one of my multirotors down, I either do it slowly straight down, or if I want to come down rapidly, move in a cardinal direction while descending (forward, backward, left, right). I like to move in a circle on rapid descent so I can do so in as small an area as possible.
Thanks Ron. True, but the issue I was pointing out is that it is massively noticeable on the EVO. Every other consumer grade drone from Yuneec, Parrot, DJI does not have such a noticeable wobble.
I have a Chroma, which is actually a Yuneec disguised as a Blade, and it will do the same if I descend to quickly. So will my DJI and all the ones I've flown and built. I believe to avoid this, many companies are only allowing a rate of descent that will compensate for this. I always change the rates on my birds so I can descend faster (albeit in a given direction). All the best and Happy flying!!
Vortex ring state, or settling with power, was very common, and very noticeable on my Phantom 2, so I developed the routine described by Ron_RC. This routine is now standard practice with me, only descend with forward or backward motion. I now fly more modern kit, and I think the angle of the motors and prop design have more or less eliminated VRS. Yes DJI certainly limit rate of descent, which is not a problem for me, as I am more interested in smooth video. Not sure if it can be fixed with firmware update, as the geometry is also important, but a reduced descent rate would help. It is very unnerving to see it wobble, especially for beginners.
Cool ... !!! I liked it as it was myself flying watching u !!! My nephew ll visit me this Christmas from texas !!! Planning to get myself a drone !!! Suggest me which one should i buy ?? Myself Mechanical Engineer by profession & Drone is more likely for weekend hobby !!!
Thank you. You can't go wrong with any of the big name drones on the market this year, they are all good. You just have to pick a price point. Here they are in order from low price to high price: - DJI SPARK - PARROT ANAFI - DJI MAVIC AIR - AUTEL EVO - DJI MAVIC PRO PLATINUM - DJI PHANTOM 4 PRO - YUNEEC TYPHOON H
Hey Steve, One last question if you don't mind regarding filters since you have the experience with them. Do you see a real quality difference Freewell vs Polar Pro. Thanks again for all you do.
For me there is no difference at all between FREEWELL and POLAR PRO. I think they get their glass made at the same factory. I tell everyone to go with whichever product is cheaper for what they are looking for.
Hi. After flying thre EVO would you buy one with your own money / are you glad you've already bought one, or do you think your money would be better spent on another product? I'm thinking of buying one myself, but obviously its a considered purchase. So I want to gather as many honest opinions on it from people who have actually flown one, before I jump in, or not. Thanks !
If you are coming from a world where you have not flown many drones or have never flown a drone than flying the EVO will seem like the greatest drone ever. However, if you come from a world of DJI drones, then you will find that the EVO does fly well, but it lacks many many features that DJI drones offer. If you have become accustomed to those DJI features, then you will miss them. If you have never known them, then you won't miss them.
How's it going. One of my reservations on this drone is the prop getting caught in the shot. I've seen several, even in your videos where the prop on the left infiltrates a great shot. How bad is this issue and is it something you need to be constantly aware of?
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 I figured as much. It just seems like an undersight that autel couldnt have avoided the issue all together. Never had that issue with the mavic but i am considering another autel it they truly fixed the connectivity issue the xstar premium had
@@mediacreationsbydudley1728 Still have similar issues with DJI. Props in view can happen on most drones. EVO has a wider FOV so you have wiggle room if needed. It's one drawback of the EVO design, but no worse really than others like it. 3-5 degree gimbal pitch change usually fixes it. Best drone for no props is the Anafi.
There's one thing I don't know if you mentioned.. PROPS GETTING IN THE CAMERA... If you're level with the horizon and you go forward not even that fast a lot of times you can see the props... Not to mention you cannot get a 30° tilt like the mavic pro.. I've never seen any props in the mavic Pro Weather 30° tilt, going fast slow any speed..
Yes props in the shot... usually the prop on the left edge of the shot looking forward. The Mavic Pro will do the same if you fly fast forward, while looking forward. I think the EVO does it at slower speeds, but I can't be certain.
CAPTAIN DRONE I know that I always see it in the EVO shots almost exclusively. Even when the guy from autel was demonstrating it he quickly pointed the camera down.. I thought they were going to fix it.. Ask for the mavic Pro I have never seen a propeller in any of my videos.. even in sport mode.. there are times when I'm going 20 miles an hour and I have the gimbal pointed up 30% still no props.. the only thing I've noticed is when you see the sun causing a shadow because of the props but that's very rare. I just think it's careless on autel his part not to pay attention to this As you can see from the MAVIC PRO 2 pictures, OR MAVIC ENTERPRISE, who knows what they're going to call the different Mavics, it looks like they're keeping the same design and I'm willing to bet they'll be no prop problems. I mean when you're spending $1, 000 on a drone you should be able to at least go level on the horizon at a minimum 20 miles an hour with no props.. I think it was definitely a mistake on their part. I know that people say you're always looking down. This is very true. But once you have the ability to go 30 degrees up and play with the Gimbal and never have to worry about the props you really don't want to go backwards and it's fun to use.. ;)
Awesome Video demo! Can't wait for the next. Seems like a great competitor!! Love the simplicity of waypoints. Very helpful aid for property video, r/e work. App seems great on Android devices too. Autel may win over the Android market base since DJI is not doing much to fix the serious issues of aircraft disconnects, and app video pixelation loss of signal transmission in their Go4 app since adding the Air to it. Now it's really bad for MP, Air and Spark users. DJI is blaming the devices. lol because they all work on an app version from only a few mos ago.
Excellent Review! Captain, your reviews are objective, thorough and concise - no extra 'hey-look-at-me-i'm-so-neat-and-you-are-not' ego stroking of one's self, just the facts and insights that can only come through a vast amount of experience (it's obvious) you do know what you are talking about and not just talking! Much appreciated. I may be new to drones, but not new to those who drone on and on (and on) about drones.. Looking forward to seeing more vids of yours. Have you reviewed the Swellpro Splash 3 waterproof (allegedly) drone? If so, can you give me a link to it, please.
Thank you very much for your comments. I have not reviewed the Swellpro Splash simple because the water near my place is not clear water. With such drones you want clear water so that you can see several feet or else it is pretty much of no use.
People seem to tolerate the very same thing with their DJI drones. My P4 has lately started up with squint horizons at times. It can kill off otherwise triffic footage too.
Thanks for the sub. It depends on the client or website you will place them on. You'd want something small and portable that can automatically film an object on the ground by flying around it, away from it, towards it, etc, so the Mavic Air, Parrot Anafi, Mavic Pro would be best for 4K since they have many automated smooth flight patterns. The Autel EVO is new and does not have sufficient flight options at this time, but they are coming with each firmware update. Phantom 4 Pro would provide the best overall quality and flight options. If you just wanted 1080p, then the Spark is great (The Spark photos are really good).
I just hope Autel stands by their specs. It says up to 30 min flight time and 44.7 mph. As soon you turn on the EVO it says 25 min remaining. I have yet been able to see the EVO make it close to 40mph. Did Autel over estimated their specs or more firm updates?
I have 3 DJI drones and an EVO - in general they all work best with IOS and the map does not show with androids ( EVO ) This is major as you don't know where the drone is without the map.
Nice work, Cap'n. To the point, no time wasted on oververbalisation! So far this one looks like it could be a source of temptation - if ever Autel decided to market their stuff on the Eastern side of the Atlantic...
Hmm...looks like a pretty good contender.... I started with the Spark - loved it, but no 3 axis...then i got the Mavic Pro- loved it too, but realized it was going to take up a hair more room in my backpack than expected when traveling....SO I bought the Mavic Air: Perfect! Size, Portability, Agility...love it! But i hate that I cant use it...Why cant I use it, you ask? I'll tell ya! When I first bought it, i had an issue where i could not custom select a freq band, so I was just stuck on 5.8, and in my area it's way congested, I'd lose connection or get choppy transmission in a very short distance. Then came an update that fixed that issue and all was beautiful. Just this week, the issue came back, and I'm perplexed. I'm ready to sell it and go back to the Mavic Pro and try out the Autel. Suggestions?
I'm actually in the USA! As I mentioned, when I first got the Air, I noticed terrible image transmission, and as soon as I would head out 100 feet up it would lose connection and return to home. I then noticed that when I would try to custom select my freq band, I only had the 5.8 option. After a week there was an update to DJIGo4 and this resolved the issue, I then had 2.4 AND 5.8 and in my area, 2.4 was the sweet spot. It flew great! I loved it! Super smooth, great response, it's a REALLY nice piece. Just this week, after updating the Go4 app, i get the same issues as before. You bring up a good point however- when i tried to reset my password in the DJI App, if i tried to use my phone number it tells me to enter my Chinese phone number - i'm wondering if somehow the app think I'm in China and maybe it's a regional thing? (I'm def. not in China, I'm certainly in New York lol). I'm on iPhone, does the hack work on iOs devices? I haven't done much research on that subject as I havent had a need to.
Ah, OK - this is actually what I did read up on - I tried this and was not successful...I loaded DJI Go4 on an android tablet, and no dice! It was the day after that when I contacted DJI Support and they said "delete the app and reinstall it after 24 hours, trust me". What he REALLY meant was: "In just over24 hours, we are releasing an update to address this particular issue". What DID work was using my wifes iPhone 7 Plus, this was successful, but when I used my iPhone 6S, no good. I awaited the update and all was well. I now have the iPhone 7 Plus and this issue is occurring again. My hands are thrown up in the air, I'm about to give up. What's worse is that I know of ONE other person who has complained about my exact issue on social media/forums. Everyone else has a slightly different variation of this where they only have the 2.4 band option, from what I've read. I dont think it's the drone, but more of a conflict somewhere in the app software, or compatibility issue between the app and the phone. Again: Mavic Air is a GREAT device, I'm just one of the few who is stuck with an oddball issue!
Has Autel fixed all of the "7 Common Complaints" you listed in this video yet? I'm a new subscriber and considering what to buy. Been building and flying racing drones for 2 years, and feel like I want a camera bird next. Probably will go cheap and get a Spark, but this EVO looks very good to me, especially the camera saturation look (watched all your other EVO vids comparing it). Thanks!
Autel have just announced a new beta firmware update, v. 1.3.3.15. What’s New 1. Optimized gimbal performance. Improved YAW smoothness 2. Added Precision Mode to limit the max speed and stick sensitivity** 3. Improved Gimbal auto calibration function 4. RC flight data metric system setting auto-sync with APP 5. Improved flight stability and wind resistance in normal mode 6. Improved accuracy of flight data on the RC display 7. Bug fixes
Now that's a new one. I often get compared to different celebrities (from David Letterman to Garth Brooks to many TV show supporting actors to the lead singer of Green Day, and now Rick Steves).... if only I had all their wealth. :)
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 But if you had their wealth we would be missing out on your great videos because you would be too busy for us simple drone operators.
I so like your break-down on these EXpensive toys? I look at the quality you show & the Camera/Gimbal concerns me. If I went w/ one like this or another one I'd want to craft a protective piece for areas like the camera. Really not a toy at the price so thanks for your expert opinion & as usual, thanks for your video editing skills a joy to watch your works
In my opinion, both would not survive a front end crash. The EVO's gimbal is just larger & heavier than that of the Mavic Pro. Both have sealed gimbals that protects from the environment. The EVO's gimbal does seem like it is a bit more secure to the frame than that of the Mavic Pros.
Looks to me like the EVO is going to be a good little drone. Like you said, a few firmware updates and it will be much better! Keep us updated on firmware updates and when they release the iOS app! Tom
I think Autel have fixed the gimbal tilt now with the latest BETA FW update. I think it is almost a perfect little drone... AT LAST! How do you think it compares to the Mavic Pro Platinum?
You would think that the 1.5 year old Mavic Pro would be a Model T Ford piece of junk compared to the brand new Autel EVO. However, the old Mavic Pro still does many of the things the EVO does and more in some cases. The EVO has the better camera for sure though.
I love the look of this drone, the only downside like you say is the 2 buttons under the controller, having said that I can't see that being a deal breaker for me, now I'm torn between the Mavic 2 pro and the Evo, I've never had an Autel drone before but I've had quite a few DJI drones, this next choice is going to be a difficult one, thanks for your reviews ;-)
Mark, the cameras are rather comparable on both drones. The real differences are in the other features such as sensors, flight time, quick shots, follow me, obstacle avoidance, etc.
I think you've made my mind up and as I've flown a lot of DJI drones, I'll stay with a product that I've tried and tested, so I'll go for the Mavic, but fortunately I'm about to get a bit of a windfall so I may just buy the Evo as well and if I don't particularly like it I can always sell it on, as I always say " you can't have to many drones" ;-)
Let me make a prediction , lots of drones will eventually come out with survey based avoidance and shared avoidance. Survey will be your drone will go up and do an 360 and capture the local sight based area and remember exactly where those thing were in the picture. So along with sensors it will use the survey info too. They may also survey will on the move :). Shared survey data will be available So you fly in the same area as someone else previously, then it has some basic data, if lots of people have flown then you will get insane obstacle avoidance.
Love my Autel x star premium and my phantom 4 pro V2 as well. Would buy the EVO asap but not having an iOS app can be added to your con list. Not interested in their beta app version. Waiting for them to get it together then an EVO is in my future.
CathyAnn. I disagree with the Autel not surviving a crash. Yesterday I was flying mines and DuBois Park in Florida and a hawk came out of nowhere an attack my Autel Evo. And look like a Top Gun dog fight in the sky. At one point I panic and hit a palm tree. The Evo fell about 30 feet and hit a concrete table Bonce from the table onto the hard sand and rocks. It took some damage on the top nose of the Evo and the battery came flying out. I just performed a test on the EVO and it works perfectly fine other than the deep scratches in the front nose. I have majority of the footage fleeting away from the Drone but at the point that I panic I hit the stop recording button right when I was about to hit the tree. if you would like some of that footage I'll be more than happy to send it to you.
The guy who demonstrated the fix on TH-cam, is testing the EVO for Autel (my understanding). I hope I didn't misunderstand this, but he did demonstrate the fix for the whole video.
If that happened to me, I'd be having a major attack of "the vapors!" ... Also called a "major heart attack." I'm glad your done didn't sustain any damage that would stop it from flying. I can only imagine how you felt!
What choices do you have for auto control of the gimbal besides tracking a subject? Can it look at a waypoint it doesn't fly to, for instance keep looking at the centre of where you're standing? Can It auto do: loop around you, reveal in/out? (effect shots)
Maybe you could have another segment where you teaches cinematic shots of several drones; Typhoon plus, mavic 2 pro and autel? At 10:05 at Autels menu would be great to see the different modes "Orbit, ""WayPoint", "Viewpoint" compared to other drones finesses. At 11:37 the menu shows "heading", seems you can point the drones nose at a waypoint. So basically you could have a 5th waypoint at yourself, abort the mission at waypoint 4 and have tracking of a subject? (for landscape shots) Something to experiment with? I have also watched all of your videos and can't stop thinking that the Autel Evo is sharper but has natural and actually dull colors compared to DJI. DJI looks like crazy Go Pro colors with neon green and dark blue sky.. Could you try an inflight comparison of the color modes of the drones? I think Evo "Vivid" is the same as M2P "normal"
Watch Monday's video. It is the Mavic 2 Zoom vs Autel EVO camera comparison with very pretty Canadian Fall Colors. I don't want to disappoint you but I've tried the AUTEL VIVID mode and it looks cartoonish. It can be used but only in certain situations.
Great Video. The only thing I wish it had is the option to use a tablet (iPad) sorry my iPhone is just too small for me to use at age 56. I love being able too put the new 6th Gen 9.7 inch iPad on my controller. It simply makes things that much easier for me. So I don't have problems with my Phantom. I do like it though.
That's good to know, puts it in a different light. I wish you would have said something I can't be the only person thinking it. Makes this a must check out Drone, just wanna see what DJI is hidding in their backpocket;)
Did you find that the brightness of the controller display was dimmer or brighter than your phone? I personally gave up on phones and tablets that I just can't see in daylight and went to the Crystal Sky monitors. These while expensive are at least highly visible in daylight and have easily swapped batteries so you can keep flying (when your phone would be dead)
The screen is a bit too small to use it as a display for viewing the video. It works better as just a readout of information. The Crystal Sky's are great in the outdoors.
It depends what you want. - For range it would be the EVO - For video quality it would be the EVO - For portability it would be the AIR - For automated flight for video and for obstacle avoidance and follow me functions it would be the AIR
Does the Evo often miss the exact takeoff point as it did in this landing? I find that my Mavic Air is about 60% good here and my Phantom 4 is really close to 100% accurate at returning to the same spot as takeoff. Sometimes the P4 is so shockingly close that I have been tempted to mark an outline of the landing gear to test this out.
To be honest, I've never tried to see if the EVO could land exactly where it took off. In this video I had cancelled the return to home which was initiated when the drone dropped to 5 mins of battery remaining. I was just flying it around me trying out a few options when it fell to critical battery and just landed itself right where it was (thankfully it was near me and not over water). In a future video I'll test out the accuracy of landing on return to home.
I'm actually surprised by the waypoints feature, I like the free movement. What I don't like, is that it's setting the hight on the waypoint before continuing instead of gradually moving down until the next waypoint. I'd like you to do a comparison with Parrots flight plan (it's the same one from Bebop and has it's functionality unchanged for over 2 years)...and also consider the price point (even if it's 20 bucks more to be added to the basic price of Bebop or Anafi for it's an in App purchase in either Free Flight Pro or Free Flight 6)
The waypoint mode is better than DJI's which requires you to fly the waypoints before setting up a mission, but it is still bare bones compared to Litchi. I sent an email to Autel outlining ways to improve it that include allowing the drone to ascend and descend between waypoints, curved paths at each waypoint instead of just stopping and starting and setting points of interest between and at each waypoint for the camera to focus on. I use waypoints all the time on my P4P for clients so that's the reason I use the Litchi app. Hopefully, they will make some changes to improve it.
but its the best flightplan out there ..here s the thing with parrots flightplan... whenever the drone go to its next way point at a different height it do not stop then go down or up then continue ... its all in one motion as it travels to the next way point it lowers or climbs to the next waypoint which i love... thats why i say purchase the flightplan you want be disapointed
i made my comment before i saw yours... but i think the parrot flight plan is better than litchi app to...i was a master at the flightplan 3 miles out having the camera pitch down 10 or 20 back to 30 degrees all programmed... having it fly sideways backwards etc etc also as ithe drone turns its very slow and smooth
the rear obstacle avoidance in the autel evo can't be fix because of the limitation of the infrared sensor...infrared sensor can't detect an obstacle far enough for the evo to react to at operational speed... its like the side infrared obstacle on the phantom 4 pro, it will only work when its going very slow..
EVO Rear OA works in slower and beginner modes, not faster ones. Faster speed settings disable some OA features just as they do on DJI. Autel doesn't just indicate the RED rear obstacle sensing, it beeps at you to say stay away. It will still fly into the operator/obstacle, but if the operator is that crazy to temp fate.. well... they'll learn the hard way.
Another great review! Looks like a nice machine! Is your hat designed to hold a Go Pro? I can't figure out how you have that camera so firmly mounted to your hat? I can't see any straps or hardware to speak of? Is there a place where one can purchase a hat like that or did you make it yourself?
Have a look at the text below the video. In each video I include a like to the camera and audio gear I used to make the video. There is a link to the GoPro hat there. So far, it works very well.
I read that anyone who bought the Evo before July 1 got a case. Mine came with a case. I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor. It's a cheap case that doesn't really look like it was made for the Evo. I saw camera bags at Best Buy yesterday that are made better and would hold more.
@CAPTAINDRONE798 hey I got a question I hoped u maybe able to anwser. Will the avata 1 work with gyroflow if it's in 2.7k 120fps wide view? Or is it only in specific modes ?
As always perfect video review but, can you be honest about something... even the Tello have much straight horizon with the video frame and it even don’t have gimbal... so the AI logic behind the video recording + EIS on the Tello = nearly perfect straight with horizon video, the EVO is way more expensive and is not coming with such logic from day one ? I don’t get it, same problem with the horizon is present in the Xiaomi Drone, after doing fast movement and gimbal action its taking time for the gimbal to compensate the horizon to be straight with the video frame, what the hell ... there was no such problem with the X-star .... non of all the DJI drones have such problem, let’s hope that a firmware update will really fix this issue for the EVO
Purcheased at Carolina Dronz! Why not for DJI users? I do not like very mutch a lot of flying jokes modes. I like a mission good waypints program and a serous drone with a really good camera. I think this one is for me.
You could actually create a waypoint, then copy it to another phone for someone else to use, and then, like you said, both drones would follow the exact same flight plan. Cool!
I believe it could. It is showing the obstacle on the display and detecting it. Now all they have to do is set the software to say... when placing an obstacle detection image on the screen, also slam on the brakes!
You are correct on the FLIGHT MODES. The PARROT ANAFI has an incredible selection of flight modes and so do many DJI products. The EVO is really scarce in this regard. Perhaps more are on the way in future.
@@kyleknox7909 considering how well Flight Plan is on the Anafi, it's well worth it. It's as good as Litchi, but cheaper. It makes sense in a way. You decide as the owner whether or not the extras are what you need. Not everyone will fly those modes, and those unfamiliar with those modes like FP, could even end up losing their craft. Many use flight modes that get them in trouble. Happens a ton, and you read about it on forums and FB groups all day every day, especially when they depend on OA from any drone. Flying through wooded areas even with drones that have great OA, is never a good idea... but people do it all the time. Flying non VLOS at night is probably reason #2 so many lose their aircraft.
From my understanding it does. It was a last minute decision after manufacturing that they killed the 900 mhz. They said it was because they plan to sell the drone in Europe and in some parts of Europe first responders use the 900 mhz range.
Have u sen the Mavic 2 Pro
God I'm glad I didn't buy the Autel EVO with that flipn Horizontal Tilt took forever to fix than well rear Obstacle Avoidance that doesn't stop it plunging into a Tree.
Then the follow me that looses you .. Seriously.
DJI Mavic 2 Pro 1in Sensor and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom have Arrived and No Issues and Selling like Hot Cakes ** **
If you sissies would man up and mod your Mavic pro firmware, you can experience freedom from your master!
You mean like the camera's coming unglued on the DJI their glued in and those dam flight restrictions.
I subscribe to other drone channels but yours is the only one that gives objective reviews. Others are biased by previous experiences. Thanks!
Thanks Paul!
Have you ever looked at Dustin Dunnills channel??? You might wanna rethink that comment!
I think this is the best review from someone who loves dji! No fanboy ever came close to this review! Amazing! Thumbs up!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Glad to see you got your Evo Steve, and the bag came with it. Hope you enjoy it and can't wait to see more videos on it!
See my latest vid if interested, at :20 th-cam.com/video/IO2SlIAe2QA/w-d-xo.html
very nice review. Quick question, what's the best non dji drone available? Evo, anafi? Karma, 3dr solo? Yuneec? Others?
Here they are:
- ANAFI (due to price, camera, flight time and flight features)
- EVO (due to price, flight time and camera)
- TYPHOON H - Original version (due to price and features)
Karma and 3DR Solo are discontinued due to performance and sales. They had potential, but never arrived at their full potential.
The above are considered quality consumer drones. If you want less expensive and more entry level good drones, have a look at the MJXRC BUGS series.
It really shows when a lot of work, effort and thought is put into a video and you did just that, very entertaining, thanks Captain!
Thank you, your comments are very much appreciated.
Great demo. Good job and thanks for taking your time to help us shoppers decide. Do you know if they have any firmware updates since this was shot? Do you allow Face Book communication?
Best Regards, David
Hi David,
Yes there have been firmware updates and the horizon tilt is 99% fixed as well as a few other features.
The only tip I give everyone is for your first few flights, find a wide open field with no people, no trees, and have fun!
Otay
Thank you, much appreciated!
CAPTAIN DRONE thanks for the advice and keep up the great work!!!
I might just agree with you. I've emailed them twice and not only did they email me back, but kept emailing me and asking if I had any more questions.
Autel's customer service is also world class. Love my DJI drones but their customer service is horrible.
CAPTAIN DRONE so true.
Thanks for the review. As it now is a few months old, can you tell if it has had any firmware updates as you expected it would?
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 THX!
I truly appreciate your content, and the lack of biases. Thank you. So what is your true initial opinion of the Evo?
After having 5 DJI drones I purchased EVO from Drone-works lets see how is it Thanks
Yes, but what you didn't mention is selling your body to them for those comps ;D
Thanks Steve!
Wow. Another great video. Thanks.
If there is no internet available, can you cache the satellite map to create the waypoints? And in the orbit mode, can it do that with a moving object? Tia
It does not make use of the internet, it is all GPS.
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 ok
So where does it get the satellite picture from? Internal?
@@ralph9987 OK, now I see what you are asking. You want to see the maps when you have no DATA on your cell phone. I don't know if you can cache them in advance, I've never tried it.
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 yep that's exactly what I was trying to say. Thanks. Btw did you find out if the evo will orbit around a moving object? Thanks again and keep up the great Work!
Hi Captain what do you use to film yourself? Your video are awersome, really precise!
Hi Tom. Below every video I place links to the gear I used to film the video. You'll see a statement like "GEAR I USED TO FILM THIS VIDEO" following by the information.
Panasonic In this case I imagine
The Panasonic was used for the unbox and into/end talking head shots. The GoPro Hero 6 was used for all the looking at the EVO shots.
Very nice job indeed!
Wrong, modded firmware on a mavic pro allows it to fall flat and silent under power at over 10m/s. It's awesome.
You look like Moulder from Xfiles
Cool ...
Here they are in order from low price to high price:
- DJI SPARK
- PARROT ANAFI
- DJI MAVIC AIR
- AUTEL EVO
- DJI MAVIC PRO PLATINUM
- DJI PHANTOM 4 PRO
- YUNEEC TYPHOON H
Hey Steve, One last question if you don't mind regarding filters since you have the experience with them. Do you see a real quality difference Freewell vs Polar Pro. Thanks again for all you do.
For me there is no difference at all between FREEWELL and POLAR PRO. I think they get their glass made at the same factory. I tell everyone to go with whichever product is cheaper for what they are looking for.
Thanks again Steve. Sure appreciate it
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Thank you. Much appreciated
How's it going. One of my reservations on this drone is the prop getting caught in the shot. I've seen several, even in your videos where the prop on the left infiltrates a great shot. How bad is this issue and is it something you need to be constantly aware of?
You need to be aware of it if moving forward at full speed. In such a case, you just point the camera down slightly.
CAPTAIN DRONE
I know that I always see it in the EVO shots almost exclusively.
I just think it's careless on autel his part not to pay attention to this
As you can see from the MAVIC PRO 2 pictures, OR MAVIC ENTERPRISE, who knows what they're going to call the different Mavics, it looks like they're keeping the same design and I'm willing to bet they'll be no prop problems.
I mean when you're spending $1, 000 on a drone you should be able to at least go level on the horizon at a minimum 20 miles an hour with no props..
I think it was definitely a mistake on their part. I know that people say you're always looking down. This is very true. But once you have the ability to go 30 degrees up and play with the Gimbal and never have to worry about the props you really don't want to go backwards and it's fun to use..
;)
Couldn't agree more with Paul. Thanks for the detail and objective reviews, this is very helpful for new comers in the great world of drones.
Good video. I hope they can fix the horizon tilt issue first. Having a slightly off horizon is tricky to fix in editing (with iMovie anyway)
I hope they do or else I'll have to film below the horizon.
People seem to tolerate the very same thing with their DJI drones. My P4 has lately started up with squint horizons at times. It can kill off otherwise triffic footage too.
harry camper not a hundred percent and now there's a new issue the camera is twitching after firmware update
subscribed, What is your recommendation for a first timer who wants to shoot outdoor real estate vids?
Thanks for the sub. It depends on the client or website you will place them on. You'd want something small and portable that can automatically film an object on the ground by flying around it, away from it, towards it, etc, so the Mavic Air, Parrot Anafi, Mavic Pro would be best for 4K since they have many automated smooth flight patterns. The Autel EVO is new and does not have sufficient flight options at this time, but they are coming with each firmware update. Phantom 4 Pro would provide the best overall quality and flight options. If you just wanted 1080p, then the Spark is great (The Spark photos are really good).
That waypoint mode... free style. Awesome!
I just hope Autel stands by their specs. It says up to 30 min flight time and 44.7 mph. As soon you turn on the EVO it says 25 min remaining. I have yet been able to see the EVO make it close to 40mph. Did Autel over estimated their specs or more firm updates?
dhan219 You can get 30 mins but the battery will be critical.
Again: Mavic Air is a GREAT device, I'm just one of the few who is stuck with an oddball issue!
dude, just mod the firmware, get off IOS, and install the 2.4g go4 on android.
Very nice video! Good detail and easy to follow!
Thank you!
Thanks!
The Gimbal horizon tilt has been fixed. The rear sensors have been fixed when in follow me mode (they work). Other items, not so much yet.
Thanks for the update.
Autel have just announced a new beta firmware update, v. 1.3.3.15.
What’s New
1. Optimized gimbal performance. Improved YAW smoothness
2. Added Precision Mode to limit the max speed and stick sensitivity**
3. Improved Gimbal auto calibration function
4. RC flight data metric system setting auto-sync with APP
5. Improved flight stability and wind resistance in normal mode
6. Improved accuracy of flight data on the RC display
7. Bug fixes
Always good, honest reviews. I have been trying to figure out who your voice sounds like and I just realized its Rick Steves, the travel guy. lol
True, but I'd also have celebs joining me flying drones in my vids... Hey Robert De Niro, quit flying your drone near my Bentley!
CAPTAIN DRONE or Hey Bentley, quit flying your drone around my De Niro. 😖
I so like your break-down on these EXpensive toys? I look at the quality you show &
the Camera/Gimbal concerns me. If I went w/ one like this or another one I'd want
to craft a protective piece for areas like the camera. Really not a toy at the price so
thanks for your expert opinion & as usual, thanks for your video editing skills
a joy to watch your works
Thank you!
So tell me, and be honest, because I need to make a decision, comparing Gimbals, wich is more durable, Mavic Pro or Evo?
In my opinion, both would not survive a front end crash. The EVO's gimbal is just larger & heavier than that of the Mavic Pro. Both have sealed gimbals that protects from the environment. The EVO's gimbal does seem like it is a bit more secure to the frame than that of the Mavic Pros.
Great review Captain!! Love it! Just got my EVO today!!
Thanks Peter!
Does yours wobble while coming down or did they fix it?
The EVO has the better camera for sure though.
indeed.
Got one in the mail cant wait to get it!
well?
@@foam27 awesome drone I love it
I love the look of this drone, the only downside like you say is the 2 buttons under the controller, having said that I can't see that being a deal breaker for me, now I'm torn between the Mavic 2 pro and the Evo, I've never had an Autel drone before but I've had quite a few DJI drones, this next choice is going to be a difficult one, thanks for your reviews ;-)
Mark, the cameras are rather comparable on both drones. The real differences are in the other features such as sensors, flight time, quick shots, follow me, obstacle avoidance, etc.
I think you've made my mind up and as I've flown a lot of DJI drones, I'll stay with a product that I've tried and tested, so I'll go for the Mavic, but fortunately I'm about to get a bit of a windfall so I may just buy the Evo as well and if I don't particularly like it I can always sell it on, as I always say " you can't have to many drones" ;-)
be free, leave your dji master.
So you can turn the aircraft and it will continue on its path? That's like some kind of magic!
Great review! Just want to say that that horizon problem was fixed.
I hear there is a BETA firmware out that addresses the horizon tilt, but it is not out for public use yet, so my horizon remains tilted.
The answer is Yes and Know. When you do waypoints, it does not have camera tracking, although I believe you can set the camera pointing direction.
Oh I see. Thank you!
There is an attachment (sold separately) to use a larger tablet with the controller.
The Crystal Sky's are great in the outdoors.
i like epson moverios better ;)
I have 1k to spend. Would you go with Autel or Mavic Air?
It depends what you want.
- For range it would be the EVO
- For video quality it would be the EVO
- For portability it would be the AIR
- For automated flight for video and for obstacle avoidance and follow me functions it would be the AIR
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Thanks. Appreciate it
great video yes out of the Evo Totally surprised I actually liked it like I said I’ve been at Dji fan..But I do like it
Does the Evo often miss the exact takeoff point as it did in this landing?
It's so noobs dont nail something on the way.
..... Thanks for the insight 🙏🙏🙏
ANAFI still conquering my heart ❤️ for my next drone purchase....
hello. thanks for good video.
in tracking mode, is it tracking the smartphone GPS or just a recognize silhouette?
thank you.
The EVO tracks a shape (somewhat of a silhouette).
thank you.
do you know if in futur it will be tracking by GPS too?, more effective...
There is no GPS built into the controller, so it would have to use the GPS in your phone. I'm sure AUTEL could add that in future.
Just WOW on that waypoint selection!
Yeah, it is pretty slick. On the Parrot ANAFI there is a similar feature but you have to purchase it (one of their in-App purchases).
In -app purchases...what a turn off!
Love the unboxing😁👍👍
Really like that controller.
The Speedy Gonzales mood unboxing is awesome you r the best ever
the rear obstacle avoidance in the autel evo can't be fix because of the limitation of the infrared sensor...infrared sensor can't detect an obstacle far enough for the evo to react to at operational speed...
its like the side infrared obstacle on the phantom 4 pro, it will only work when its going very slow..
True, so that means AUTEL could add a TRIPOD or CINEMA mode where all sensors work with obstacle avoidance. The EVO could really use such a mode.
Awesome - thanks!
Do you recomend it for interiors?
In a large area, you could fly it indoors.
good video I like the waypoint feature its really good ..
Where did you purchase this evo? The Autel website and amazon do not show the carry case?
DroneWorks must have them because they shipped me this EVO and there was the case included.
I read that anyone who bought the Evo before July 1 got a case. Mine came with a case. I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor. It's a cheap case that doesn't really look like it was made for the Evo. I saw camera bags at Best Buy yesterday that are made better and would hold more.
Again a really nice video 👍
I can buy one with 5 batteries now in July 2024 for 300 bucks it's basicaly new. Is it worth it still
Yes
The Phantom 3 Advanced and Pro used to have the tilted horizon problem. Eventually DJI fixed it.
Great video upto your usual high standards Captain. Just watch where you step :)
Thanks! :)
Great video Steve
Thank you!
7:06 LOL,,, come on , dont be hard on yourself,,,, I had trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time,,lol
Always can count on C.D. for my drone fix.. thanks again.
Thank you!
Purcheased at Carolina Dronz! Why not for DJI users? I do not like very mutch a lot of flying jokes modes. I like a mission good waypints program and a serous drone with a really good camera. I think this one is for me.
yeah, what he said ;D
Great video and review
How about height limit? Is 500m like mavic?
Nice impartial review, thanks & Regards.
very very crisp footage nicer than my pro
At 5:26/7 the prop is visible at the top left corner. Should we not be at the point in drone evolution where new products don't do that any more?
Most would agree with you. The Parrot ANAFI., The SPARK and the MAVIC AIR are drones that can film without the worry of props in the footage.
Hi men, do TH-cam recommendation buying the Autel Evo to your experience? Thank you
I like the EVO. Watch my Monday video where I compare the camera on the AUTEL EVO to that of the MAVIC 2 ZOOM. You'll be very impressed.
I like your video
I live in south American never fly a drone I like to buy one and start flying do ypu have any recommendations for me
Thank you
You have to tell me why you want a drone and what you want to use it for.
Does it shoot Veritcal? Noticed the lens turn on start up.
Unfortunately not. Just straight forward and 90 degrees down.
Waypoint mission with another drone following the first drone? How about that?
You could actually create a waypoint, then copy it to another phone for someone else to use, and then, like you said, both drones would follow the exact same flight plan. Cool!
what distance do you get before you lose video transmission on your phone ?
I have not tried a massive range test. Seems to easily work fine within 1 mile.
1mile is good in built up areas
Well. It’s a year later. Did they resolve all of these issues?
How do you talk over drone . Are you using editing software are can this be done live like on Facebook.
External audio mic of course.
Could the obstacle detection be changed to a full obstacle avoidance with a firmware update?
I believe it could. It is showing the obstacle on the display and detecting it. Now all they have to do is set the software to say... when placing an obstacle detection image on the screen, also slam on the brakes!
Just need a software updates And more flight modes would be great
You are correct on the FLIGHT MODES.
Looks like a great drone.
The first 10 flights will give you more flight time, after 10 flights the battery is fully ready and its on max limit
I think I was at flight #4 in this video.
I think if you did a battery test with the anafi...... the anafi wins
airrodgers not a chance, all things being equal.
Lack of 900mhz can be fixed with firmware?
Its got the hardware?
From my understanding it does. It was a last minute decision after manufacturing that they killed the 900 mhz. They said it was because they plan to sell the drone in Europe and in some parts of Europe first responders use the 900 mhz range.
Thanks, I can't wait for the guys who "fixed " the DJI firmware to unlock the 900mhz on this ;)
