In this video I share seven tips on how to play piano by ear in church EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANY THEORY. Specifically, I show you how to use the information that's already in the hymnal (i.e. the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass notes) and generate different styles of playing, from gentle to triumphant. Now, sure there are a million other ways one could embellish their piano playing, but this video is only meant to serve as a starting point. If you want to dive deeper into this topic, check out my online piano course where you'll gain a solid foundation for improvisation 👉 www.ralucabojor.com/pianobrains
Hi, I'm Raluca and I'm passionate about teaching pianists how to play by ear. I am classically trained, which means that my musical foundation is based on reading sheet music. It wasn't until my teenage years when I unlocked the secrets to playing by ear (i.e. improvising, arranging, composing). Now I make a living from arranging piano music and teaching others how to do the same.
For the longest time I thought that playing by ear was a gift reserved to those who were "born" with it. BOY, WAS I WRONG!!! It turns out that playing by ear is a skill that can be developed just like any other skill in life. All you need is the right training.
Over the past decade I've taught hundreds of students. I tried so many strategies, some that worked, some that didn't work so well. I'm thankful to my students for being willing to experiment alongside me in finding out the best strategy that worked for their brain.
Now I've gathered all these wonderful tricks (that have been tested on real students!) and created my online course so that I can help YOU too!! :) Will you be my next success story? I can't wait to help you become a confident pianist who doesn't need to rely on sheet music. SIGN UP for the Piano Brains course today 👉 www.ralucabojor.com/pianobrains

The world entered the church via modern music. This is beautiful. Miss it dearly.

Raluca, I am almost convinced to sign up for your piano brains course!! I rely heavily on sheet music and my brother who plays beautifully by ear and couldn’t read a note if his life depended on it gives me such a hard time. He’s the main pianist in our church and wants me to be able to play along with the band using the Yamaha Clavinova using the strings sound because we have plenty of bass players. If I’ve heard it once, I heard it a thousand times…you have got to stop relying on that sheet music!! I think I will like your teaching style. I did stop playing for several years and I’m paying for it dearly. I could just kick myself. Thanks for all the beautiful inspiration you provide through your music.

That is a good lesson. I also like to turn a right hand chord, say a quarter note by playing the bottom note as an eighth rest-eight note.
My church is contemporary and piano is now used for pads not accompaniment.

Yep! There are a million ways to embellish hymns on piano, and adding eighth note subdivisions in the RH is a great way to support the congregation! My church is also shifting towards contemporary... 😐
