Hi Terry, also I think something was lost in translation around 1:35. I don't believe that an outboard powered fishing boat would have failed to notice a MOB, even if they were paying close attention to nets or lines. Horrible either way, and might should not equal right on the water, but I'm also curious about the source for the unnoticed MOB story

Likely he had his autopilot running the boat... no one even watching where they were going. On the Great Loop cruising the East Coast of USA, we had several situations when approaching vessels where under autopilot and aimed right at us... head on. Had to give way several times because not only were we playing 'chicken', but I am pretty sure there was no one on those boats watching ahead.

That the mother didn't mention that the crew (Captain) helped her and her baby is not surprising.
In my work I have experienced an even mor drastic case. I talked to two survivors of a terror attack in Africa, carried out by gunmen. One of the survivors, a woman, complained to me that none of the men who were present helped her. Months later I came across one of these men. He told me that he and another man have dragged the same woman behind cover. When I told him what the woman had told me he instantly provided me with the name of the other man and of further witnesses. I do not believe that the woman was lying to me, I just believe that her memory was blurred due to the extreme circumstances.

Most people have faulty memory even in quite benign circumstances.
There was a law professor at Harvard who used to stage a stunt during one of his lectures - there would be noise and shouting outside the lecture theatre, people would run through and at some point a gun would go off. He would then ask his students to describe what happened; it would take only two or three accounts before there was huge confusion about what happened. His conclusion was "be careful how much trust you place in eye-witness testimony".

I can tell you from personal experience that Marine Traffic specifically has been having database problems lately, so I would not put too much stock in the flag state change unless you confirm those changes on another platform. My own vessel disappeared entirely from the MT database a couple of weeks ago, and our live icon showed varying incorrect information. All the yacht details including MMSI and photos had dropped off the database. Some other vessels in our vicinity also had strange readouts. A week later we were back in the database but with stale details. We seem to be live and current now, but it was all over the map just in the last few days. FWIW.

The sailor (Griffiths) was actually reported to have said "Griffiths told investigators that the ship "tilted and we fell into the water”
"We were then able to climb back on and we tried to rescue those we could,” he said.
"We rescued those we could, also Cutfield rescued the little girl and her mother,” Griffiths said. This would lead us to believe that the captain rescued the mother and child when they got back on the yacht but the mother doesn't mention anything about the captain and being rescued by him.

Another great report! As you said, it's important not to read too much into the bits and pieces coming out about the Bayesian sinking. Having some knowledge about how aviation accident investigations are conducted, only after all the evidence has been collected and analyzed and a final report issued can you draw any definitive conclusions about the cause full sequence of events (which typically takes 1 - 2 years, and sometime more, in the aviation world). There are way too many people drawing conclusions and pointing fingers from the bits and pieces that come out to date.

Yes, production might play a hand and maybe amp up some drama here and there, but they really don’t need to because with so many crazy crew and passengers and captains and things that can go wrong. I'm not sure about that. If it was heeled over, theirs no way he would have been able to stand and prise them open, which throws up another possible reason for water entering the cabin area!!! I think we need to wait for all the statements to be compared. Also, my interpretation of the Captain and crew members actions re saving the women and child was that they had been thrown off, climbed back on board, and the captain rescued her. Are we only hearing parts of what has been said.

If it was the sliding doors and the boat was so far to one side that escape was the only thought then one door would've already been to one side. If the doors were pinned then his hand motions are wrong and certainly the shear force of water should've pushed that crewman back into the cabin until fully submerges. So is there another set of sliding door or doors that would need someone to look down at to pry apart left to right? Or is he just a lying braggart trying to make himself look good???

It was a standing order on the yachts I have worked on, particularly the last one, that when the watertight doors are closing, you do not attempt to go through them. You will be crushed to death if you slip or fall. There are escape hatches in the various compartments, that is why you do escape drills. I think there might be sadly a little re-writing of history here. The guests are very dead. The young mother with her baby by her own testimony was thrown in the sea when the yacht heeled over. Maybe the Captain pulled her into the life-raft. Maybe.

@eSysman. Thanks for sharing.... this is somewhat scary testimony from the "sailor", and I'm looking forward to your comments. At the moment he asserts "manually forcing open" the salon doors it seems Bayesian was a) without electrical power to the salon doors, b) stable and level and that, c), once forced open, the salon doors may have also required "manually forcing closed", and may have both been left open... also freely sliding on their tracks with the subsequent movements of Bayesian. Note:
    1. This is the same "sailor" as was on bridge duty.
    2. The sailor asserts and pantomimes "manually forcing open" the doors.
    3. This implies Bayesian at that moment lacked electrical power to normally function the doors.
    4. The salon doors have been reported to EACH weigh over 1,000kg.
    5. The weight of the doors, and ability to manually manipulate the doors, implies Bayesian was at the time the doors were manually forced open stable and level enough to allow for "manually forcing open" the doors and sliding the doors in their tracks.
    6. There is no mention of taking the time to manually re-secure the doors..... leaving the likelihood the doors were afterwards left open...

Also between sailing vs sailing boat. As a good skipper I try to avoid accidents, but others just don’t do it…
I have to run back from the beach because 2 boats are anchoring at the same time, and the cross wind sandwich them against my boat in the marina! Scratching the hull and fleeing.. this is the state of skippers now a days

As a yachty myself I have to agree that the standards are dropping. In June we were nearly hit by a 20m power boat doing over 30 Knots while sailing near Murter, Croatia, despite being the stand-on boat I had to take action to avoid a collision, the lads on board the power boat seemed to be more interested in waving cans of beer around, and only noticed us at the last minute, despite our boat having a 20m mast with sails on, and AIS broadcasts.

If you have" black ship" situation when the hydralic watertight sliding (wtsd) doors are open they will not close ,by them self ,if not equipped with emergency measures for generating hydralic pressure. At some ships there may be pressurised gas resovars that can manage one closing of the doors via local presursation of the door cylinders . They usely have manual pumps and valves to open and close them also. These doors is no joke! they will cut of limbs or cut you in half if you are not clear when they close!
The idea being that no debris should prevent a watertight seal if present in the doorway, when the doors are closing. The status of the internal wtsd will be very easy to document, these doors do not slide shut or open by gravity,if the ship is laying on its side.

Just a suggestion on IES showing dragging in a strange angle.
It might be as you rightly suggested IES error or data error from on board compas.
But this "sideways dragging" did happen to me on a 11m sailboat when the wind direction swinged suddenly from W to S to E to NE when anchored behind an island in Greece during a storm.
The chain was behind the keel (fixed keel) and we were dragging the anker with the chain perpendicular to the boat. We could see the chain in the middle of the boat with a flashlight. We started the engine, gave it a burst toward the anker, chain got loose and dropped below the keel.
    We were safe!
Im not at all suggesting it would have worked with a 55m vessel in a tornado. INVESTIGATION WILL find the truth behind this terrible accident and there will be scratches on the back of the keel if the chain went behind it.
    Best regards
    Piotr

I feel very sorry for all the people on the yacht Bayesian and their families.
    The fact is:
A highly upgraded super sailing yacht with a mast and a lifting keel sank in a storm while anchored.
In the dark of night, within just a few minutes.
    300m off the coast.
    7 people died.
    10 people survived.
9 people witnessed the incident directly, what do they say?
The cause of the accident is still completely unclear and lies in the dark seabed.
I am an engineer and I am also a designer.
I learned a trade at a shipyard in Hamburg.
I worked as an engineer in aircraft construction in Hamburg for 38 years.
I love sailing ships, blue-water ships, cruising ships for crossing the Atlantic and Pacific.
I don't like the sailing yacht Bayesian, why?
I want to outline this here:
My eye and my feeling say that the design of the yacht is disproportionate.
    1. It is a very fast yacht, not a cruising yacht for relaxed driving (racing yacht).
    2. The hull is very long in relation to its small width, the volume is smaller.
    3. The hull lies deep in the water; the side height when tilted is therefore lower, less buoyancy.
    4. Only one mast, which is very long and voluminous, and has a large lateral wind attack surface. The mast has a lot of weight over the hull, which shifts the center of gravity upwards and reduces the tipping stability, the yacht tilts more quickly in the wind.
    5. The yacht requires a special crew for this type of construction. Personally, I would not design, build or buy a yacht like this, even if I had the money. As the owner/captain of such an exposed yacht, I would have to stay awake and be very attentive at all times so that no mistakes are made that could lead to a catastrophe. That would be too stressful for me.
The Bayesian must be salvaged urgently so that the cause of the accident can be clearly determined. That is the least we can do for the victims, their families and all those affected.

It‘s a motor yacht with a capacity of 60‘000 liters of fuel and huge, heavy engines, masqueraded with a mast of 75 meters, heavy of 450 tons - the crew hadn’t any chance to saving this anchored vessel in this case, only for the centerboard they would need 30 minutes, and the engines some minutes and maybe a hatchway was open - sunk over the stern sideways - tragedy

I also doubt that any satellite resolution is precise enough.... just imaging the amount of data you would have to transmit.

When the Crewman said that he had to force open the doors I immediately wondered why those doors would need to be forced!
Those poor Crewmen were literally left with just the clothes they stood in!
Everything they had is currently on the seabed.
The sight of the tall masted yacht in the New Zealand storm video heeling over onto its side, then righting itself was highly impressive and imbues considerable confidence in the stability and safety of the vessel.
Compare that to the horribly low angle of the incident vessel, which would have been downflooding uncontrollably if it had suddenly heeled over onto its side, which Crew and Guest said had occurred.
The designer and builder chose to locate those large, open intakes in such dangerously vulnerable parts of the hull, and as such they are responsible for the consequences if the vessel heeled over onto its side and began uncontrollable downflooding.
The Crew had those vents open for the overnight operation of their generators and air conditioning packs.
The Crew were on deck when the yacht suddenly capsized onto its side and were all thrown into the water.
There were no Crew left on board that could close the intake vents on the starboard side to stop the downflooding.
I await with interest the final report issued by the UK MAIB in around a year's time...

The forecast was (translated from Italian):
THE WEATHER FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS IN SICILY - Between the afternoon-evening of Sunday and the days of Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 August the worsening will come alive with showers and thunderstorms on several occasions in the provinces of Trapani, Palermo and Messina. The involvement of the 'thirsty' Ionian and southern localities of the region, on the edge of the depression circulation, is more reduced: on the central-southern sectors of Sicily the phenomenology will be more sporadic and disorganized, in the form of spotty thunderstorms more likely close to the reliefs (Etna, Erei, Iblei) in the central hours of the day. The strengthening of the westerly winds will determine a gradual increase in the wave motion of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Sicily, from rough to very rough.
BEWARE OF THUNDERSTORMS - The interaction between the air mass inflow from the North Atlantic and the warm waters of the lower Tyrrhenian Sea, on the threshold of 30°C on the surface, could fuel the genesis of phenomena of strong intensity on the northern coastal locations with the risk of cloudbursts, strong bursts of downbursts and punctual hailstorms: the marked thermal surplus of the seas represents, in fact, a reservoir of potential energy favorable to convective motions and the development of violent thunderstorms, which can sometimes also be associated with waterspouts. Particular attention is also paid to the mountainous inland sectors, particularly subject to sudden changes in the weather and sudden thunderstorms, especially around mid-day.
