Thanks for posting! I bought my blower for $60 with a missing electric starter, bought one online for $60 and cleaned the carb. Now I have a wonderful "new" $120 snowblower, thanks to your starter mounting tutorial. God bless you.
before installing the started motor, a little bit of oil on the starter motor engagement shaft spline and some grease on the both the started gear and fly wheel gear is a good idea.
The snowblower whisperer. It makes a racket but not a horrible noise (funny). Great work on that worm gear chute control. You guys must have more salt on your roads than us.
Thanks Bruce. Yes this state uses a lot of salt which is fine when it's necessary. This particular snowblower was left outside a long time which does contribute to the rust ...that and it probably wasn't cleaned off after use
Enjoyed the video and i have worked on a few like that and what i found out was the two top bolts on the engine with the shoulders on dont have to be removed all i did was take the two bottoms ones out and the started dropped right out because the mount on the top of the starter is slotted and it made it a lot easier . that worked for me
I can get my starter out with the wheel still on. It's a 8hp 26" Motomaster Tecumseh. The reason the top starter mounting tangs have slots is so you can loosen the top bolts, then slide the starter out once the lower 2 bolts are removed. Also it's easier to install when the top two bolts are left in.
It's pretty straightforward to replace a missing or burned out starter motor but not all Tecumseh engines that didn't have electric start from the factory have provisions to install it. Some of them don't have a ring gear on the flywheel for the starter to engage. My Toro 421 does have one and the blower housing has a breakout for it but the lower two mounting holes aren't tapped 1/4-20. I have the taps plus a 6-32 tap for the plug/switch assembly but the machine is 40 years old and it starts just fine using the recoil. If I come across a 33290 starter at a reasonable price I might update it someday.
Hey Dave it was me that was wanting to see the starter install. I had to go out of town unexpectedly just got back in a couple of days ago. Thanks for the video buddy. Happy Thanksgiving.
I don't think you'll be getting any snow AT 65 DEGREES!!! LOL. I need to move down there I really don't like winter. I did when I was a kid but not now
Just loosen the top bolts, then remove the bottom bolts and the starter will drop off. Reinstall by slipping it up under the two top bolts , install bottom bolts and you,re done.
No you are right. I went back and rewatched the video and the bolts were in it still so not sure why I removed those 2 bolts. Its from a couple years ago so I couldn't remember
You didn't test it. I just replaced mine, put it all back together, (tank and all), and the gear is misaligned. just grinds. When I loosen it away, the bendix will spin out, but when re-tightened, just grinds. Where do I shim? how much? Which bolts? :(
I did test it. But if you need to shim start with the 2 top bolts on the starter with just a couple washers. Or I've heard of guys bending the mounting tabs on the starter. Hope this helps
Thanks for the reply Dave. I tried the top 2 bolts, (pivoting starter away), but it will grind, until it's so far, it misses. Guess I need to remove the blower housing, (nitemare?) and see which way it's missing.
Well, i put this machine on hold, till this week-end. Ended up removing blower housing. Can prove the bendix is kicking out, but the teeth tips are just missing. I can washer/ shim the two back bolts, and then the teeth will just touch, but still grind. Next is to measure/compare the ring gear diameter to another serviceable one. Mine measures 7.790.

Thank you. I hope you get many years out of it

Thanks. Yeah I thought about that later and figured that's what the slots are for

Thanks for the lesson.
Your skills are impressive.

I'm enjoying your videos. Keep them coming.
Thanks Dan I hope you're all caught up. More on the way
Very helpful, but I saw a bit of corrosion on the contacts where you plug in the cord.

Hey no problem. Hope you have a good Thanksgiving too
Nice fix there Dave. I had to replace the old starter on my old Tecumseh Snow King snow blower last year, I got one one for it on ebay.
Hi Pete. Haven't heard from you in a while you been ok I hope. Well it's snowblower season already can you believe it
Very well done. I liked it and learned a bunch. I just need snow!
I don't think you'll be getting any snow AT 65 DEGREES!!! LOL. I need to move down there I really don't like winter. I did when I was a kid but not now
AMERICAN by birth and first on this channel by choice! Woo Hoo Dave Ackerman!
Love it. Thanks buddy
I wish Diesel snowblowers had this type of electric starter!
Just loosen the top bolts, then remove the bottom bolts and the starter will drop off. Reinstall by slipping it up under the two top bolts , install bottom bolts and you,re done.
There was no need to remove those 2 top bolts. They just needed to be loosened. Otherwise very helpful.
Yes but this machine didn't have a startwr or bolts on it so I had to install the bolts too
No you are right. I went back and rewatched the video and the bolts were in it still so not sure why I removed those 2 bolts. Its from a couple years ago so I couldn't remember
no need to take the upper shoulder bolts out, the starter should slip up under them
I have a spout issue where it won’t turn from left to right
