Awesome FM sounds ! Hat off & thanks for this amazing moment... showing the incredibly wide range of sounds a Yamaha DX7 can produce, between one talented programmer's hands ! ;-)) Great weekend to you with new FM projects ! ;-))
Thanks Synths Colors!!! I don't usually like FM apps or VSTs but the FM player has the DX7 magic (great jobs with sampling and velocity layering). If you want next best thing, this is definitely the one. You just can't tell the difference between the DX7 and FM player E.PIANO 1. Also I was contacted by the developer who was inspired by my work on the DX7 and FM sound design. So glad that my tutorials are useful.
This is the 4th recognition. First one was by David Diamond, the original keyboard player from Berlin. The second one is BT, the legendary musician, composer, innovator and technologist. The 3rd one was Blake from Yamaha US, and he wanted to share my 80's hits video with a-ha, Mr Mister, Madonna etc. Here is the link: yamahasynth.com/blog/tag/DX7 At the end of the day, it's not quantity or how many views, subscribers you have. It's about quality of your creation, skills and knowledge that count. I think we have the same view about our creation and really great to see you bringing out some amazing synths with your magic touch!!!
Power DX7, would be great to get some of your custom sounds loaded into the next gen (FM Player 2)’s preset bank when it is released. @Matthew Fetcher, hope you’re listening! :)
Thank you POWER DX7! This is amazing. For those looking for the FM Player link: itunes.apple.com/us/app/fm-player-classic-dx-synths/id1307785646?ls=1&mt=8
It should, but even with sampling you can do either a great job or mediocre job. I've used a sample based VST/ app and I wasn't impressed (some sounds are good but the others aren't that good). So as a free app, this is as good as it gets. The best thing about this app is that it capture the magic of the DX7 sounds (I don't know how to explain this). Many of VSTs I used and compared against the DX7 just don't have that.
I've grown up with my buddy DX7 since 1986, so I'm so used to listening to its sound (particularly imperfections). Those imperfections make the DX7 Mk1 such a great synth.
Can't go wrong if you have an iPad, you can just get this free app and take your DX7 sounds anywhere!! It's got that DX7 magic faithfully captured. Some patches sound different and this is due to using the DX7II, instead of the DX7 MK1, as I used for this comparison and demo (as my DX7 II module TX802 is out of action with power and audio problems which I need to get fixed soon).
Could you do a comparison between your hardware DX7 and the new Arturia DX7 V plugin with your personal custom patches, the same way you did with FM8 an Dexed? Thanks!
Thank you. I've never used Reface DX, so I won't be able to give you detailed answers. However, based on my experience with FM synthesis, if you really want to learn to programme, then I would recommend 6 operator FM synths. The main reason is flexibility in sound design. Some people complain about the DX7 not having non-sine wave waveforms, but that's not really a problem. With different algorithms and settings, you can make great sounds with just sine waves. Having harmonic rich waveforms other than a sine wave, it becomes much harder to control for generating only necessary and desired harmonics/ inharmonics. SY77 uses extra 15 harmonic rich waveforms but it also introduced a digital filter for cutting down unnecessary harmonics/ inharmonics. Or if you really want modern FM synths, then Yamaha Montage has 8 operators. There are many choices to choose from, but my favourite is always going to be the DX7 MK1!!! Cheers, Power DX7.
In the past I sold my SY77, I was young and not understand the great power of that machine. Nowdays I have a TX802 and a TX81z that are different beast, I think this DX/TX can give useful sounds in modern music productions. I have read a lot of good opinions about the DX7 mark 1, as a different sound over the MK2, your favourite give me a new buying idea for this Christmas :D In some demo on the web I appreciate the Reface DX as a good machine with different feedback on every operator and a different new type of timbre possibilities. Thanks for your fast reply, have a good DX day ;) Tommy
Hi Tommy, thanks for your story. You should be able to get SY77/99 or TG77 at a reasonable price. TX802 is a great FM machine. Mine is out of action at the moment, as it developed power and audio problems. The DX7 MK1 is my fave! It's sound more dark, raw, dirty, gritty and noisy with more bass and mid range, and I just love its sound. I come home from work, playing my DX7 MK1 so therapeutic!!! It really relaxes me, not sure why. I still have a lot more to do with my DX7 MK1. I want to get really serious into making some great drum sounds as well as FX. FM synthesis has such unlimited possibilities. Cheers, Power DX7.
In my opinion, FM player is possibly the best soft synth/ app available that faithfully captures the magic of DX7 synths. I've used VSTs and for some reasons, they just don't have that magic. Sure this is a sampler of the DX7 sounds, but you can do either really good job or mediocre job for sampling DX7 sounds. This is just really great.
The difference you hear is due to the use of the DX7II, instead of the DX7 MK1 like I did for this comparison and demo. My TX802 is out of action as it developed audio and power problems (it makes a hissy noise even without turning its power on!!!!). The DX7 II can introduce more metallic tones at higher velocity than the DX7. Also with the DX7 MK1 low-fi 12 bit D/A converter and audio circuit, at higher output, high end gets reduced and mid to low ends get enhanced. The DX7 Ii has 16 bit D/A (I think) and cleaner output. You can hear the clear difference with the BASS 1 patch comparison (Mr Mister Broken Wings bass line).
Always wanted a DX7. Now after 35 years, I finally have one! Thank You! :-)
Awesome FM sounds !

Yes, the sound quality improves over time !
So glad to hear that your tutorial & FM programming skills finally are recognized... ! ;-))

Real DX7 has more bottom end on the bass and sounds more lush to me.

The iPad version should be a perfect match because it's sample-based lol
HAZARDOUS88 what exactly is the app called
Called FM Player

@22.10 how can I get a copy of the DX7 MK1 Opera FM (female + male opera) you have?
Is there a way i can get some of the chior or warm pads on my Dx7?
SOFTWARE VERSION OF DX7 DEXED IS ALSO LOVELY......

Smooth Operator(s)
Hi! Can I send a patch in sysex extension and open in my Yamaha MODX?
Pq os cabos midis permanecem ligados.
Great video! Thanks. What do you think about the new Reface DX?

Thanks ;) Your opinion helped me a lot. Cheers
How do you use irig 2 ?
Glitches out like terrible on my iPad
Both good. Dx7 sounds nicer.
