Day dreamer. The international school in Shanghai is only for the rich, it’s not for the average people like most of us. The world is composed of most of the poor, not the rich! The rich will try their best to enslave the poor people to work for them, but not let the poor pass them to become richer, that’s the end of the capitalism, and the ultimate capitalism will become imperialism, and the imperialism means the war! The imperialist will start any wars against others to make his empire stronger than ever!

It's also a brilliant way to boost the globalization in terms of cultures, education and solidarity. As for the students in the international sch, I believe they probably would like to spread Chinese core values of traditions and virtues , and to be engaged in building a satisfied, better world, without caring others' judgments and accusations.

@Dont Mind Hinata I went to a school with police every day, drugs, fights and suicide jumps all the time, so that's why this school seems like a heaven for me. You know, it's clean, there are musical instruments, students seem healthy and don't do drugs. But I know that every school and every place has its own problems. It's sad that the teachers are biased there and that the money is so important :(

I have been working there for four years as a Chinese teacher. I taught level 1 Chinese for beginners, who don't speak Chinese at all and half of which don't even speak English. But kids pick up the language very very quickly. Difference from other international schools, YCIS encourages all students to write Chinese Characters from the first lesson. It does make a difference when you want further your Chinese level to an academic level.

I went to this school from Y1-13 and graduated 10 yrs ago. The facilities weren't quite as nice and modernised as they are now, and it was very nostalgic to watch this. Growing up it was a very sheltered environment for children of expats/foreigners, and not many of us were even aware of the tuition fees or how privileged we were until we became adults. Finances and money weren't things that were talked about back then amongst students, and this was pre-social media. I imagine that current students must be much more self-aware.
That said, a significant portion of the student population back then had tuition fees paid for by their parents' employers/companies, and it didn't come out of their own pockets. While you still needed to be financially privileged to attend, there was a noticeable difference in wealth between families who could afford to pay out of pocket vs having their companies pay. I'm also not sure if the tuition fees have increased substantially since the 2000s.

I love that children who know different languages early seem more curious and open-minded to learning different things in general and apparently they also do seem to express themselves better orally.Languages improves memorization as well, so it gives a certain advantage when different languages are mastered young! But even the process of learning a skill or anything is always a benefit, at any age! Helps to keep the brain trained and keep it from aging too fast :)

Just in case for your curiosity, their tuition for kindergarten is around 40K USD per year ; from Grade 1-12 around 50K USD per year plus if you want your kid to go to a better college you will have to add another 70K to go to Ivy leagues. Therefore you are going to cost 1 million USD just for the tuition fee. Counting on Extracurricular,Food, Exercise, Travel, "after school clubs", if you want to raise a kid in this way from 3-22, we are talking about 2 million USD. Repeat after me, two million us dollars.

This was quite different from the international school I went to in Indonesia. Most of the students didn't speak Indonesian. I'm kinda jealous. I think YCIS instilled a lot more local understanding and belonging than my school ever did. I've also met some YCIS Hong Kong students, though they didn't really speak Cantonese. So perhaps it's just YCIS Shanghai's success in that regard.
